As I spent a few moments thinking about the 4 th of July weekend, I came up with several points that guide me to this conclusion: I have a great family I have a great Country to live in I have great friends I am truly enjoying boating way more than I would have ever imagined! The other day was an extremely busy day, and I was about to get into one of those snits. My wife and I took a ride in the inflatable and hung out of at the RNB (Red Neck Beach) for an hour or so. As I looked out over the lake it again hit me how fortunate we are - the view was spectacular, people were having a great time, the dog was playing in the water really, does it get better than this? All of us, from time to time, need to remember how truly blessed we are! We have some fun in the sun coming up for July. Please take the time to enjoy some of the activities our great Club has to offer. Better yet, come on down to the boats and hang out, it really doesn t take to long for the fun to start. Actually, a walk around the harbor can be a great party, great conversation, and a few adult beverages along the way We have accomplished a great deal this year. I want to thank everyone involved for the incredible support. The key is that we have accomplished a great deal. Our organization is based on a bunch of me s working together to take care of the needs of our Club. I am always amazed with what we are able to accomplish. Enjoy and safe boating! Jon smyccommodore@gmail.com (414) Grounds Update Now that the all of the boats are launched its time to think about grounds cleanup. If you have any of your winter items on the club grounds (winter covers, shrink wrap) I ask, no wait I will beg that you please come and remove them. This will make life easier on me. Also remember that if you are electing to store your stand and block on the grounds for the summer please mark them with your last name. There were a few problems on haul out that could have been avoided if these were marked. Since we are on the subject of stand storage if you have or know of anyone that has pallet racking (cheap or free) please get a hold of me. This would really aid in organizing the storage of these items. Gounds chairman, Tony Karwacki
3 LMYA Update This year s LMYA Rendezvous was held at Port Washington Yacht Club in their small but cozy clubhouse which began life as a beach bathhouse in When the club was formed in 1958, the bath house was remodeled to include a bar and kitchen and meeting room with a good view of the lake. Recently, the kitchen was remodeled, again, into a cheery work space. Jim and I enjoyed a Rendezvous continental breakfast and a great cookout dinner in this clubhouse last Saturday. We also roamed Port Washington s Franklin Street shops and Saturday morning farmer s market. Also we strolled along side the marina remarking on the many charter fishing boats lined up and waiting for customers. It made me realize what a fishing hot spot Port Washington is! In the afternoon we climbed a hillside wooden stairway to the lighthouse for a tour. The tour guides treated us to not only a history of the lighthouse, but the history of the city and the harbor. Did you know Port was added to the town name of Washington before the harbor was built, in order to attract settlers and industry? We got a delightful view of the harbor from the reconstructed lamp room. To reach this perch we had to climb three sets of increasingly steep staircases from the second floor. The last staircase was virtually a ladder. But the view was worth it, putting us higher than a recently built condo and single family home which now block the harbor view from the first floor keeper s quarters. To make the lighthouse visit special for us, we discovered that one of our tour guides was a previous owner of a fish tug that Jim had owned and converted into a recreational boat. I never saw this boat as Jim had sold it years before I met him. But this is the kind of coincidence you often find in the maritime community that resides along the west shore of Lake Michigan! The actual LMYA meeting was held after the continental breakfast on Saturday. It updated us on the latest LMYA news. If you are an LMYA sustaining member, you will notice that the Blue Book insert recently mailed to you is thinner because only information that has changed is now being mailed. This has allowed LMYA to mail the inserts at $3 apiece instead of $5. The cruise cards are no longer printed separately, but placed at the end of the yacht club listings for each region. The LMYA continues its advocacy on behalf of boaters. With the ethanol content in gas increasing from 10 to 15 percent, the LMYA is pushing for signage warning boaters that this gas is not good for boats. The government wants proof that this increase in ethanol content is bad for boats. They want it in the form of a scientific study rather than anecdotal evidence that boats can blow up because of the gas. One bright spot in this issue is that the ethanol lobby has lost a round - the Federal government is defunding the ethanol subsidy. Other news is that the City of Milwaukee no wake ordinance for marine events is now permanent. The locks from Green Bay to Lake Winnebago are more than half way done. There are three barriers keeping carp out of Lake Michigan please don t fall off your boat near them as they are electrified. And LMYA lost a few yacht clubs this year two in Wisconsin and several in Michigan. But the majority of clubs on the lake are still LMYA members. One upcoming event that the LMYA participates in is the South Shore Yacht Club Open House on July 2 nd through 4 th. There is free dockage for LMYA members and activities include a Nautical Flea Market, lots of good food, dancing, and a great place to view the fireworks. If you are not yet a sustaining (individual) member of LMYA, there will be a meeting at 1:00 pm on Saturday during the Open House promoting the organization and explaining its activities. Linda
4 Concrete Challenge Results Thanks to all who donated towards the Concrete Challenge held to raise funds for concrete work needed on the grounds. We surpassed our goal of $1,250 by 06/15/2011 by $25 and our generous, anonymous donor matched those funds. All areas of the harbor participated: North, South, & East Walls, Gas Dock & Gold Coast (West Wall). The winning section was the Gas Dock with 80% participation. Participants of the winning section were then eligible for three prizes donated by members. Mike & Roxanne Gengler won the portable TV/DVD player donated by Patti Cardarelle/Sentry Insurance, Mike & Judy Trock won the pizza oven donated by Joe & Lynn Ussel, and Greg Zielinski won the Adamczyk Meat gift certificate donated by the Kilmans. The generosity of those who donated as well as the members who helped to lay the concrete is much appreciated. KiKi Kilman Hello SMYC Juniors! Juniors Update On June 28th, we held elections for the offices of Our president is Adam Hock. Our new vice president is Riley Upton. I, Ashley Hock, have re-elected as secretary. Board members were re-elected as well, Kirstynne Hock and Ryan Rybka. This is going to be another great year! Also at the last meeting we were working on this year s t-shirt design. We hope to have the design finalized and ready to go soon. Mrs. Rybka s daughter will be making the shirts for us at a reasonable price. We will order a few extra adult shirts to sell. Thank you to the parents that supplied dinner for the Juniors after sailing in June: Conti and Nowak We will be walking in the Heritage Days Parade on Sat, July 23 rd. More information about time will be sent by . I think this will be another exciting year and let s hope the great weather continues! Come down on Tuesday and watch us sail! Your Juniors Secretary, Ashley Hock Pig Roast Update What was started back in the early 70's by Vance Mason and George Steinhouse has evolved into our club's largest revenue producing event. This year with the adversity of dredging, the weather and every possible obstacle thrown at us, we look forward to this spectacle to add to our bottom line. The 2011 theme will be "Gilligan's Island". Stoneship Eden has been secured for a return engagement. Steve Steinhouse and Al & Steve Hock will provide us with the "Family Tradition Pig Roast Feast". Dinner will have a small increase due to ever-rising food prices ($18.00). Children's pricing will remain the same. This is a great time to pick up hours, meet new & old members and continue in passing the word on about our club's signature event. Donations for raffles are needed. Fellow members, we need your help and word of mouth to get our attendance up--so pass the word. This is the most fiercely competitive weekend for the consumers' festival dollar. If you have any thoughts/ideas, please feel free to call or me. Marooned & Bewildered, Gregory G. Zielinski
