Page 2 From the Director.. Russ Hall The day I am writing this article is the first Saturday of Spring, it is 58 degrees and do to obligations no riding today. This is the first winter that I can remember that I could not ride because of road conditions. Spring is here and I can't wait to start riding, we are going to have some great rides this year. The HOG chapter from Williams Harley Davidson has met with us and some local motorcycle clubs and we are going to have some multi club rides. We will also have some barbecues once a month at different locations. We also discussed at the last meeting a ride to the NY State hog rally in Orange County and a possible barbecue. Details at a later date. If there is a good riding day before the scheduled rides start, meet at the dealer ship at 11 am on Saturday or Sunday and we'll put a ride together. Now's the time to get the Bike road worthy. See you on the next ride Russ From the Assistant Director.. Dennis Lawler Spring is finally here. We re all looking forward to a wonderful riding season, visiting some old favorite places and finding some new ones. Garden State Harley is now open Thursday evenings and we re anticipating some great bike nights. At our last chapter meeting, we were able to present our charity child Christian Cacciaguerra with a check for $1500. At the meeting we also discussed having a ride to the NY State HOG Rally in Middletown NY, on Saturday, July 12 th. And we have all been invited to Bobby s house for a BBQ on the way home! New Jersey is also having a HOG Rally. This rally is in Seaside Heights, September 18 th 20 th. Everyone is also excited about having monthly rides finishing up with a BBQ at the dealership. We have also been invited to attend Bike Nights at the Pompton Lake ELKS the 3 rd Tuesday of every month May through August 7-10pm. Dennis

Volume XXVI1, Issue 4 Page 3 Head Road Captain.. Gerry Molitor April 2014 Ride Planning Mtg. April 5 (10:00 AM) As I sit writing this article, on a plane to Las Vegas (Business), I can t help but think what a dismal winter riding season this has been. The joy of cold weather adventure left me early and never returned. My trusty scoot has been parked since the Chilly Chile Run and looks as sad about the situation as me. Not ready to start riding my age yet - just chalk it up to too much cold and too much snow! It WILL warm up, however, so we need to direct our thoughts to the coming ride season and the opportuni- ties for some unique rides during the warm days ahead. At our initial planning meeting, we were joined by the leadership of our sister chapter (Williams H-D) and, after reviewing some safety procedures, agreed to combine our energies where it made sense. The challenges are much the same, and we hope to work together in driving our ride calendars towards fun and interesting riding adventures. Our next meeting, April 5th (10 Dealership), will begin to fill the ride schedule. As in past years, we will continue the Saturday lunch rides from the 11AM. We are planning several BBQ events after these rides spaced out during the year. Riders will be treated to lunch on the Chapter! Watch for those dates. At least one BBQ will follow one of our NEW MEMBER rides so come one, come all! We have several suggestions for new rides and planning for the Vermont Weekend is in the works. Tom Demming will return with more, incredible back roads events leading to great destinations and pictures. Looking forward to the planning and hope to see some new faces with new ideas for destinations. Enough for now ride safe on our dangerous streets! g-man Meeting Notice: E-Board: 04/14/14 Chapter: 04/16/14 LOH: TBA Maggie Moore s 7 Midwood Road & 202 South Lincoln Park, NJ

Page 4 New Member Contact.. Keith Ward It's finally April and the weather is finally more favorable for motorcycling 0ld man winter really wore out his welcome. He really put up one heck of a fight too! Even the polar bear club had to call off an unusual amount of rides! Hopefully we wont have such a wet April...but you know the old saying; April showers bring May flowers! Its a good idea to invest in some raingear. Garden State H.D. can help you with that as well as spring service for your motorcycle! Also the Garden State Chapter of HOG has received a fair amount of new applications to the chapter. We would like to hear from the new applicants. If any of you have any questions feel free to contact me. My contact information is elsewhere in this newsletter. So till next month Keith Ward. From the Dealership.. Welcome Spring!!!! Hope everyone is looking forward to saddling up this riding season and the Staff is eager and ready to give you the ultimate customer service!! From the Staff at Garden State H-D Picture from our March Meeting with Christian & his Dad At last month s chapter meeting at Maggie Moore s we presented Christian Cacciaguerra with a check for $1, Christian was our charity recipient for the last two years and the chapter was happy to present Christian and his family with a total of $5, during that time period. We all send Christian and his mom and dad, Maryann and Mike, our best wishes.

Page 7 From the Dealership.. APRIL IS CHECK YOUR HELMET MONTH! As you get ready to leave this miserable winter behind and head out on the open road there are some things to keep in mind. Everyone knows what to check for when they take their motorcycle out of hiberna tion, but what about your helmet? Most people aren't aware that their helmet has a shelf life. Would you drink milk past its shelf life? Then why would you wear a helmet past theirs? Ask yourself the following questions: Is your helmet 3-5 years old? Has it ever been dropped from 3 feet or higher? Has it been involved in an accident? Can you feel any dents or soft spots? Does your once snug helmet feel like it's a few sizes too big? If you answered "Yes", "I don't know", or "I don't remember" to any of the above questions then it's time for a new helmet. D.O.T. helmets are made with a polystyrene foam liner. This liner is what protects you by absorbing any impact. However, over time the polystyrene naturally breaks down, therefore reducing its ability to protect you on the road. It's for this reason your helmet should be replaced every 3-5 years (regardless of use) or if an impact occurs. So check your helmet! If it's time for a new one, trade your old one into us and get $25 off a new full priced helmet.

Page 8 Events Coming to the Dealership in April MY FAVORITE POTHOLE Last month we asked the members to send in pictures of their favorite Pot Hole. I did receive a few pic tures, but do to the lack of space this month, I ll include them in next months newsletter. I know you peo ple are bouncing thru pot holes daily and everyone today has a cell phone, so take a picture and send it to me. Just include it s location. You never know, the dented rim you save, could be your buddies. Also, the time to take the picture is when you see it. Last week I saw a huge pot hole on Union Valley Road in West Milford just south of the Court House. It was about 8 to 10 inches deep and about 18 inches around. It was bone jarring even in my truck. The following day I went back to get a picture and the town had already repaired it. So take it when you see it.

Page 9 Members Write... The follow article was written by Tom Demimg while a member of another chapter. Tom said Back in the Essex days we always had a monthly rant and the subject was open, it only had to be entertaining. This sounds like a great idea and I would like to adopt the practice for our newsletter. So if you have a rant, send it to me and I ll include it in the next newsletter. Just make it entertaining. On a personal note, although this was written about another chapter, it sounds like every ride I ve taken with PPH / GSH. I guess we all have the same issues. Group Riding- can I take another season of this? Well here we go, coming out of the winter from hell, dodging pot holes and now I have to suck it up and put up with the group riding experts. Ride leaves at 10:00am and at 9:59 in rides Leo the coffee pot. Parks the bike and immediately heads to the rest room. Oh here goes Sally in sympathy, if he has to go so do I. It is now 10:20 am and we get the group on the road with one problem, Tony forgot to buy gas and wants the group to stop and wait at the first gas station while he fills up. Two others decide to buy a snack, more on that later. It s now 10:50am and the group is cranking on the throttle. The sweep is killing everyone with the radio, he won t shut up and I forgot the Imodium AD for the vocal cords. Ok, ten bucks for the first person to cut his wire. Sorry ladies you cannot out talk this dude. The ride is settling down and I take a look in my mirror. Wide spacing, tight spacing, no spacing, lost in space, left track, right track, no track, multiple lanes, we are in the Disney parade formation. G man just experienced another Maalox moment. Leo is in the mirror again with his auxiliary lights on. Leo was not in time for the riders meeting when the group was told that only the sweep would have his auxiliary lights on. Ah the ride is progressing nicely. It is about 12:30pm as we pull into the lunch stop. Remember the two snackers, they are complaining that it is too early to eat lunch. Hell, so far today they had breakfast and an industrial size snack. Here comes Jane, good timing I got to pee and my butt needs a break. So far at least one rider is happy. Outcome the menus and here come the comments. Too pricey, too cheap, wrong cuisine, chairs are uncomfortable, lighting is poor and the parking sucks. The good news, the waitress looks like she competes in the WWF so the whiners are cautious on what they say. Size does matter! Lunch is over and it is time to pay up. Now we have to figure out who did not pay and of course there is always the 5% tipper. We have to deal with the person who only had water and the person who ate for two. The check is settled and we are looking for missing riders. Here comes Timmy and he says don t go near the men s room, someone burned the wall paper off the walls. More information than we need to know and the women make it clear that they do not like the conversation. So far not a bad ride, weather is good and we did not lose anyone. We are riding home at a leisurely pace and all of sudden bike number 4 decides to leave the group without warning and sure as hell some bikes go with him. The group rides on; the lost souls will have to find their way home. Things are quiet; someone took the ten bucks and cut the sweeps radio wire. Ten bucks well spent. The ride home is going well. I look in my mirror and there is Full Pack the chain smoker. Full Pack is the closest thing to a wood burning stove that you will find on a motorcycle ride, not the person you want to see when you fuel up. Next thing you know there is the HD sign at the dealership where the ride started and finishes. The few bikes that did not break off for home are now on their own. This ends my Rant for the month and I approved this message. T. Deming
