Our membership numbers remains more or less exactly the same as last year. Unfortunately one of our long standing Honorary members, Mr Walter Kerr passed away on Saturday 25th November Walter was 91 years old when he died, he and his wife started and organised the Warringstown Cavalcade and for many years raised a massive amount of money for Kidney Research. Finally I would like to sincerely thank the long standing Senior members of our Club who continually work hard year after year to ensure that the smooth running and interests of the Club continue into the future. I will not mention their names but we all know who they are. I look forward to seeing you all and enjoying your company at next years events. 3 OBITUARY HONARY CLUB MEMBER WALTER KERR Walter passed away on Saturday 25th November at Iveagh Nursing Home where he had been resident for the past two years, along with his elder brother Jack. Our club was well represented at the funeral, including Chairman, Dennis Mitchell on Monday 27th November at Donacloney Presbyterian Church. A farmer by occupation, Walter was best known as the husband of Josie Kerr MBE, joint founder, with Walter, of the NI Kidney Research Fund. Married in 1959, in the following seven years Josie gave birth to three children, all of whom died at, or immediately after birth, due to a serious kidney defect which Josie had. Indeed she too almost lost her life after birth of the third child. Thereafter, in addition to her duties as a farmer s wife, and Post Mistress of Ballynabracket Post Office, where they lived, Josie dedicated her time to raising funds for research into kidney disease. Fully supported by Walter at all times, together they founded the charity, the NI Kidney Research Fund in From humble beginnings with a Name that Doll competition, saving Green Shield Stamps and the production of a cookery book, fundraising evolved to founding the Waringstown Vintage and Classic Vehicle Cavalcade in 1972, still going after forty five years, with considerable input from members of Banbridge Old Vehicle Club. Awarded the MBE in 1979, sadly Josie passed away in 1993, but Walter was determined that the charity should continue, in her memory. In this he received wonderful support from a huge circle of friends, neighbours and the general public. This has resulted in many lives being saved and many others having had their life journey made more comfortable as a result of available funding for Specialists, specialist treatment and funding Research into Kidney Disease. Described in the funeral service as a traditional type farmer, a man of merit, well worth knowing, whose door was always open, always ready to help a neighbour, even at a cost to himself. Condolences from this club go to his brother Jack, his friends and relations, not least his close neighbour and very close friend and faithful friend Trevor Kincaid. Billy Ferguson. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING CHAIRMAN S REPORT My first year as Chairman has been completed. It has been a very enjoyable but busy year for me. I thank the club members for re-electing me as their Chairman for another year. I would like to express my thanks to the Committee and Officers who have worked hard throughout the past year, helping and supporting me making my job as Chairman a pleasant experience. Many outings and events took place over the summer season. The weather was kind to us at most of our activities. Kilbroney sticks out in my mind as the weather was unusually hot with large queues forming from early morning. At our dedicated Stand the gazebo was used, not for rain but for protection from the hot sun. Richard Gregory s run to Clifton House was very interesting and informative outlining how different life was many years ago in Ireland. The Outlet event was again well attended with the Deputy Lord Mayor attending our event. The visit to Ram s Island seemed to appeal to a lot of our members. Reg Bell s End of Season run to Castleward on National Heritage Day was very informative and interesting. Other Car Clubs who have visited this location in the past have had to park in the Courtyard to the rear of the Manor House but thanks to the influence of two of our members Frank and Marion McGreevy, who are official guides for the National Trust, we were permitted to park at the front of Castleward in full view of members of the public. Ronnie Burney s large box of Armagh eating apples was welcomed by everyone on the run. All our Summer activities were highly successful. It was obvious a lot of time and preparation had been put into them by the various organisers. We also had some interesting evening meetings during the last year, namely the representatives from the Speed Detection Unit who were questioned in some depth by our members. We also had the Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance based at the Maze. The Club donated in total 1, to this worthy cause. Thanks again for all the help, support and participation at all our events over the last year and I hope we have another pleasant and successful season next year. Dennis Mitchell

4 Secretaries Report Banbridge Old Vehicle Club was formed in February 1981 by a few local enthusiasts the first chairman was Herbie Heslip JP. January started our year off with guest speaker Robyn Eyre Maunsel and the chat about his various experiences was enjoyed by all. The annual N.I. Children s Hospice static display at Warren Gardens proved to be another successful event organised by Ken McDevitte and a host of helpers. This display benefited the Hospice to the amount of A very worthwhile cause and enjoyable day. June saw the tireless work of Dennis and Iris Mitchell at the Outlet in Banbridge exceeding all expectations with over 300 vehicles on display in glorious sunshine. Again our thanks must go to all our helpers David Kinkaid and Andrew Carson for putting up the signage and not forgetting our traffic police John and Helen Mercer, Martin Geary and so many other helpers that work hard too many to name a big thank you to everyone. It s hard work but the craic and banter make it all worthwhile an excellent team of workers that s what our club is all about. The season finished with a visit to one of the National Trust properties Castle Ward House, followed by a meal in Newcastle. Our thanks must go to Reg Bell for organising the event. September Club meeting we had a speaker from the Air Ambulance, Patrick Minne. This was very informative talk about the work that the Air Ambulance does every day. From it s inception in July of this year, the Air Ambulance has been called out every day, this made us realise what an important role the Air Ambulance plays in saving lives. Once again the members of BOVC dug deep into their pockets and we were able to give them A further cheque is being presented on Thursday 2nd November for It is hoped that some members of the Club will organise an event next year to support the on-going work of the Air Ambulance. Ronnie Burney has organised a week-end to Kee s Hotel in Donegal. Please support as this is always a good weekend away before the Christmas festivities. Wednesday 27th December 2017 Harry and Margaret Pepper have organised their usual Mournes outing finishing with a meal in Kilkeel. We all enjoyed such a varied programme of events, too many to mention but all bring a smile to our faces as we recollect on the places and antics of some of our hosts never mind the craic. Continue to support your Club, and get involved to make it an even better one. TREASURERS REPORT A Statement of Accounts was presented to each member of the Club present at the AGM on 31st October 2017 There was a total of 11, in the Bank Account as at 30th September I am pleased to report every event organised this year covered their operating costs, as a result the Club did not incur any expenses. Thanks to all the organisers for their efficient costing of the runs and events. We were able to donate a total of to charity this year. (A total of was donated to the Air Ambulance but part of it was presented after the 30th September and will be included in the 2018 accounts). Once again thanks to everyone who helped to make my job as treasurer an easy and pleasant one. REG BELL TREASURER From the archives Two former past presidents and chairmen Billy Ferguson and the late Dermatt McCurdy attending a charity event in Donard Park, Newcastle at the turn of the century. Paul, with the aid of a slide show, gave us a comprehensive and interesting history of this local car manufacturer, which was formed by John Crossle who built his first racing car in In 1959 he moved to Rory s Wood where the factory is located, even to this day. From it humble beginnings the Crossle Car has achieve world fame having been exported to France, Germany, America to name but a few countries where it has achieved success. Paul told us that his company is currently trying to gain entry to the Russian market. The achievements of this wonderful car are numerous having been driven by some very famous drivers such as Brian Nelson, Nigel Mansell to name but a few. Paul explained how the cars are hand built, there is no elaborate machinery or computerised systems in the factory and we were shown a slide of parts being brazed as opposed to welding, a very specialised skill. Many of the cars built several years ago are returned to the factory for restoration which shows how reliable and practical this design of car has proved to be in the racing scene. We had a most informative and enjoyable evening and thanks go to Paul for addressing our meeting. Michael McKay. 9 NORTHERN IRELAND AIR AMBULANCE Herron Run On Thursday 2nd November 2017 some twelve members visited Long Kesh the home of the Air Ambulance where we were able to view in person the operations of the helicopter, it had just arrived back from a call out, and the facilities for maintaining this essential service which was introduced recently and has been very active. We were welcomed by Patrick Minne the Chief Executive of the NI Air Ambulance service who gave us a brief talk on how well the service was operating. The main purpose of our visit was to present a cheque for 1500 to the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance on behalf of Banbridge Old Vehicle Club. This was made up of 1000 from club funds, which was approved by the committee and 500, of which 365 was collected at our September club night and the balance, 135 donated by two club members. Our Chairman Dennis Mitchell and President, Reg Bell presented the cheque to Patrick Minne. Michael McKay

10 End of Season Run 9TH SEPTEMBER 2017 However the gift shop, coffee shop and book shop provided retail therapy opportunities for many of us and great sales were made in the autumn /winter scarf department. No doubt we will see some examples over the next few car events. The Golf Links hotel provided a great hearty evening meal for all. The setting and views driving into Newcastle in the evening sun were stunning One Rolls Royce did not make it to Newcastle and had an unplanned pit stop at Clough but as ever contacts were made and links of club members were availed of and helpfully resolved the matter. Sincere thanks to our President Reg Bell and Chairman Denis Mitchell as well as Iris and Sheila and all involved in a lovely end of season run. Marian McGreevy This event was marked by at least three seasons in one day.however after welcome refreshments in the recently refurbished conservatory at The Millbrook Hotel we were ready to drive to the National Trust jewel in Co Down the unique Castleward house and estate. Initially umbrellas were the order of the day as Ken McDevitte braved the weather and the A24 tohelp us set off. We were promised a sunny day by one of the Castleward guides and the promise was fulfilled as by the Clough roundabout the sun shone and keep it up for the rest of the day. Obviously a new weather guru from Dundrum! Our classic cars really adorned the Victorian porch area at Castleward and Ron McBurney s Beauty of Bath apples from County Armagh were well received by all. Members explored Castleward house and appreciated the stories and in particular the steam driven car incident relating to Mary Ward. The choice of apple variety also made a link as the first Lady Bangor was the Earl of Darnley s daughter from Bath. Some members even ventured into the sunken garden and The Game of Thrones locations including the amazing tower houses of Audley s Castle and Old Castleward. RIAC NATIONAL CLASSIC SHOW RDS SIMONS COURT DUBLIN SATURDAY 10TH MARCH 2018 The club proposes to organise a trip to this show on Saturday 10th March 2018 leaving The Outlet, Banbridge on the A1 at 8.30 am, arriving in Dublin about 10am returning at around 8pm. Once again Ronnie Bullick will be organising the coach for us, a 52 seater. The cost of the coach and a meal on the return journey will cost 33 and the cost of entry to the show is 13. Please complete the entry form in this magazine. If you are interested in attending perhaps you could let Ronnie Bullick on or Michael McKay on have your names.
