CHAIRMAN S PAGE So, the season has started. Our Easter display something like over four days at Belfast City Hall was a resounding success. A nice number of different cars over the four day period and the organisers were very happy with what we supplied. 200 vehicles of all shapes and sizes turning up there were plenty of Apparently 23,000 people were estimated admirers. Huge as passing through the gates. Fantastic. The entertainment put on by the council was great and the weather was very kind to us. We all thanks to all those who made it to the display & special thanks to Ken McDevitte had a ball. The following Saturday was the Herron Run by stages of the repair process. Very informative and I know I learnt some things about modern cars and how they are assembled. Well done BANBRIDGE who s baby this is. Well done all. OLD VEHICLE CLUB The May run turned out a bit troublesome for yours truly to Carrickfergus Castle. Although organisers Andy and Debbie Dornan when the the weather wasn t just as good as we would council barred us from Antrim Castle Gardens have liked, we all had a good day although due to being oversubscribed by stands at the sadly several had to pull out due to health flower show. Fortunately Debbie found a little problems. I hope they have recovered. gem in the gas works museum in Carrickfergus. Our April club night was a visit to Wrights A great wee place to visit. The only surviving vehicle body shop just off the dual carriageway gas works museum in all of Ireland apparently. near Dromore and arranged by Andrew Carson. I couldn t make it to the club night event in On an evening when the weather was not at Downpatrick organised by John and Valerie it s best and numbers were lower than normal, Neil but I believe all had a good time. those that came had a very interesting tour of Look forward to seeing many of you on the the premises and were shown all the various displays and runs coming up. Please do your best to support your committee and come along and enjoy the craic. Till next time. Andy. Richard Gregory Chairman Warren Park was again a big success with 1550 being raised for N.I.Hospice. With OBITUARY Ken Geary It is with regret that the Chairman, Committee and members of Banbridge Old Vehicle Club learnt of the sudden death of our loyal member Ken. Our thoughts and sympathy are with Martin and the wider Geary family at this time. Ken will be greatly missed for his craic and vast knowledge and interest in old vehicles

March Club Night BANBRIDGE March club night was an interview with club founder member and former chairman Billy Ferguson. Billy gave us an insight into the origins of the club as well as some of his personal highlights. 58 years married to Millicent and children and grandchildren. For many of us, finding out why the various runs and events are named as they are, was quite interesting and revealing. Billy then went on to tell us of some of the fun he had at various rallies where he often had to use his every day car to compete with. Very brave indeed, as he said, sometimes a quick wash wouldn t have sorted the car out after a rally, yet he had his successes and obviously is very proud of his achievements. Quite rightly so. Billy also brought along a large collection of photo s of all the cars he has owned over the many years. What a collection and some very very nice vehicles. OLD VEHICLE CLUB Many thanks to Billy for an interesting, entertaining and enjoyable evening and to Ken McDevitte, interviewer extraordinaire. One day we will put Ken in the chair and he can tell us of some of his escapades. The club does indeed have a very interesting past. This might be a good idea if we have someone in the club who would be interested in doing something like a pamphlet on the history of the club to be handed out at some of our events!!! Food for thought. Richard Gregory

APRIL Club Night BANBRIDGE This was the first meeting of the year away from Banbridge Rugby club and saw some fifteen members pay a visit to Wright s Car Repair Centre at Rowntree Road Dromore. We were given a guided tour of the premises. Firstly we were shown where the vehicles were registered on computer on arrival and where the staff clocked in before commencing work on the vehicles to be repaired. Next step in the process was the stripping of the damaged area of the vehicle when those parts to be reused were put in a crate marked with the registration mark, computerised and moved to a special store where the new parts are placed in the crate awaiting fitting to the particular vehicle. The whole process is closely monitored throughout the repair process and management can see clearly on the computer at what stage the job is at. We were shown the painting bays where the process is controlled by computer with fumes being kept to a minimum and the paint drying in OLD VEHICLE CLUB a matter of minutes. The air conditioning system within the building ensures that the air is dust free. There is also a system to extract vehicle fumes. We were shown the different pieces of equipment used to straighten the bent sections of a car. It is amazing how much equipment is used in the car body repair process. Throughout the process most of the work is carried out by specialised technicians in their own field of expertise until the car arrives back at the arrival point for reassembly, where it is washed and cleaned awaiting collection by its owner. It was amazing to see the number of BMW and Mercedes Benz awaiting repair. Is this a sign of bad drivers or cars which cannot withstand the abuse the drivers give them. Our thanks go to Andy Carson for arranging a very informative and enjoyable evening. Michael McKay

Children s Hospice Classic Car Display Sunday 26th April 2015 was a bright sunny morning with a very cold wind blowing. Ken McDevitte opened the gates of Warren Park car park and set about getting the venue ready for what he hoped would be a busy day. Richard Gregory, David Lauro and Michael McKay erected the newly bought BOVC gazebo. Andrew Carson put up signage along the way to let the enthuasits know where the venue was. John and Helen Mercer quickly took up their positions to welcome the first trailer and car which had arrived belonging to Albert and Alisha Kyles who had travelled from Killybegs in Co Donegal. Later in the day David Lauro presented them with a Trophy for the furthest travelled. Over 200 individual and special cars packed into Warren Park car park to create a wonderful display of vintage and classic cars. Some of the more unusual cars on display were, Trevor Lorimer with his 1977 Maserati Merak, Robert Dougan with his black and silver 1951 Austin Devon, Jim Wilsons 1934 Bentley, Jim Black in his 1925 green Rolls Royce, David Lauro arrived early in his cream 1936 Standard12, Alistair Murray in his new baby Austin A35, Patrick McCambridge arrived in his black 1960 Simca. One very dapper gentle man arrived in his East German Trabant. Many other cars were represented including Austin Healy and Sunbeam Alpine, Along with a large contingent of Capri s and Mercedes. This was backed up with a selection of Military Vehicles. These were but a few, such was the variety. A Big thank you to all who supported this event which enabled the Northern Ireland Children s Hospice benefit to the amount of 1, this amount of money will provide electricity for one month for the Hospice. Again a big thank you to everybody who made the day such a success and we are already looking forward to the same event next year. Sheila Adair

BANBRIDGE CLASSIC ROVER CLUB (NI) VISIT TO WARREN PARK SHOW As with so many Classic Rover Club (NI) outings, our rendezvous point for this event was McDonald s Sprucefield for breakfast. Here we were joined by three members of the Northern Ireland Italian Motor Club (NIIMC), who were also on route to the show. OLD VEHICLE CLUB Although I felt very cold, the sun shone most of the day and we all thoroughly enjoyed the event. I would like to thank the members of BOVC for making us feel so welcome, for all the hard work they put into organising this annual static show (which raises funds for Northern Ireland Children s Hospice) and congratulate them for hosting another great event. Maureen Curran Seven of our members supported the BOVC by exhibiting their cars and we were also joined by several other club members who attended as spectators. The car park with packed with everything from a fantastic display of military vehicles to classic cars, with the Capri Club putting on an impressive display. Apart from the Rovers, two other cars caught my eye; the Maserati Merak SS and a beautiful twotone blue Ford Zephyr.

BANBRIDGE MAY CLUB NIGHT 26th May 2015 Our May meeting took us to Downpatrick when 40 members and their friends paid a visit to the Down County Museum and Gaol where we were given conducted tours of both locations. The exhibition commemorating World War 1 explained how this impacted on the lives of the residents of Downpatrick and the surrounding countryside. At the Gaol, the only surviving eighteenth century gaol in Ireland we saw the cells, heard about the famous and infamous inmates who were held here to serve their prison sentences before either being hanged in public or sent to Australia. There were several museum galleries showing prison life at this time as well as the history of the surrounding areas. Everyone present enjoyed the tour and the information provided by the two guides, which concluded with the usual tea/ coffee, scones and tray bakes. Our thanks go to Valerie and John Neill for organising such an enjoyable evening. Michael McKay OLD VEHICLE CLUB

THE HERRON RUN SATURDAY 11TH APRIL 2015 Traditionally the first run of the season for the BOVC, this run was actually the first ever held by the Club, away back in the early eighties. Organised this year was in the capable hands of our Club Chairman, Richard Gregory, ably assisted by his wife Wendy. Entrants assembled at the Chimney Corner Hotel at 10.30am for greetings and the Fix of coffee and scones. Here a sombre note was introduced when it was learned that Jean McKeown, wife of former chairman Colin McKeown, was being buried that very day. Colin is remembered as an excellent Club Chairman in 2002/2003, despite a very serious heart condition to which he succumbed on 16th November 2003, aged just 47.Respect for Jean was paid by those present with a short period of silence. Then it was off on the Herron Run, on an interesting and attractive route, mostly unfamiliar to those not having a Co. Antrim accent. Meticulously planned and printed, but not read by the majority of passengers, through beautiful Antrim scenery, to the seaside. Carrickfergus, to be precise. Here Richard and Wendy had organised suitable parking to display our classic cars to the many interested members of the public. This event brought out some new additions to the scene, and at least one attractively refurbished one. Time to picnic, and a little shopping, or window-shopping if the budget was tight. Then a tour of Carrickfergus Castle, with the services of a very competent Tour Guide, who provided a leaflet for everyone and regailed us with tales of John De Courcey s arrival in Carrickfergus and the building of the castle, commenced over 800 years ago, with snippets of notable events down through the ages. We left Carrickfergus around 3.30pm to another feast of Co Antrim scenery for the next twenty seven miles or so, terminating at the Drumsilly hotel just North of Antrim, where our meal was served just after 5pm. After dinner President Ken McDevitte thanked Richard and Wendy for organising the event, and the hotel for an excellent meal and service. He also produced an Easter Egg, no he didn t lay it!!, which was awarded to the person correctly naming the number of roundabouts traversed on the latter part of the run, this was won by Mrs Jim Gregg. In all twenty five cars and forty two people enjoyed the outing, on a cool but bright day. Our thanks again, and congratulations to Richard and Wendy for an excellent beginning of the season. Billy and Millicent Ferguson.

Before we left it was announced that we would not be going to Castle Gardens, Antrim as planned as they could not accommodate us due to their Open Day and the organisers had quickly arranged a visit to the Gasworks Museum at Carrickfergus. This turned out to be a very interesting, showing us how the gas was produced from coal and how the Company made use of all the byproducts, tar, coke etc. Nothing was wasted. We enjoyed seeing all the gas applications, cookers, fire, iron etc which they sold to encourage the use of gas. The weather was kind and we enjoyed some lovely scenery on the way to the Gasworks and later on our way to Barnaby s restaurant where we had a very good meal. Our thanks is due to Andy and Debbie for arranging such an interesting run at such short notice. Well Done! Jim Gregg OLD VEHICLE CLUB
