5 DONEGAL WEEKEND WITH THE TWO RONNIES On Friday 20th December 2013 a combined group of BOVC members and the Mercedes Club spent a weekend in the Keys Hotel, Ballybofey. This weekend was organised by Ronnie Burney. There were 23 people in the party. Ronnie by using his business skills and his friendship with the owners of the Hotel negotiated a really good deal for the weekend. Although the weather was not very favourable we were inside most of the time and as you can imagine being entertained by the Two Ronnies (Ronnie Burney and Ronnie Bullick) ensured a lively few days The food served over the weekend was outstanding as was the live entertainment provided each night we were in the Hotel. The Hotel had a spa and Swimming Pool which some of the fitter members of the party made use of while some of the ladies spent time shopping in the well known McIlhenney s department store in Ballybofey. Ronnie had organised an excellent weekend acnd a welcome break before Christmas. Over 200 was raised for charity this was divided between Newry Hospice and Marie Curie. Many thanks to Ronnie Burney. 7 M. G. CHARITY QUIZ Seven of the brainiest members HA! HA! of the Banbridge Old Vehicle Club took part in the annual M. G. Quiz on 20th February in the Ivanhoe hotel. I am pleased to tell everyone that we came second and only missed out by three points for a win and the blame for that was the absence of our Mensa member Andy Dornan who needs to get his priorities right if the Club is taking part next year. A great night was had by those of us who attended on behalf of the Club and much needed cash was raised for charity. 800 being presented to each of the two charities. Myreve Chambers A.O.V.C.Calendars Unfortunately, due to administrative problems, the club only received a very limited number of these this year. I hope the enclosed alternative gives the information you need for other club events etc. for those with computers, the AOVC website can also be accessed. Good news, calendars now available from Club andmembership Secretary Richard Gregory Chairman
8 January Club Night Autoline Insurance The first club night of 2014 got the year off to a great start when Claire Acheson, Coleraine office New Business Team Leader, and Wendy Clanachan - Personal Line Sales Advisor, gave members a very comprehensive review of what Autoline Insurance has to offer. The main focus of their presentation was Classic car insurance, and whilst it was clear that many of the members present were familiar with Autoline (formerly James Campbell & Son) they quickly took the opportunity of raising a number of questions with the girls. Clarification was provided on several specific aspects of classic insurance, including - garaging requirements, valuation procedures, cover for pre-1960 MOT exempt vehicles, off-road cover, and annual mileage allowances. Insurance cover in R.o.I. was also confirmed as included. This was in response to a question from Billy Ferguson who pointed out that there is no reference to R.o.I. cover on current certificates. The topic of insurance cover for younger cars was also raised and Claire Acheson made it clear that Autoline was keen to maintain the custom of all existing customers, who owned what might be seen as future classics or cars which were either produced or have survived in limited numbers, and are now cherished by members and used very sparingly during the show season. It was obvious that members appreciated the opportunity to raise specific issues with both Claire and Wendy. A queue quickly formed and many one to one conversations took place following the formal part of their presentation, whilst the rest of us enjoyed the usual hospitality provided by Iris and Sheila. It was also interesting to hear about the other insurance services available from Autoline, and to learn that the club benefits financially from a small commission paid to us for each policy and renewal issued by the company. Congratulations to the committee for setting up this very informative event, and thanks to Claire and Wendy for taking time to share their expertise with us. 9 February Club Night An extremely interesting and informative talk was given by Jennifer Gracey about Forthill Farm s development and it s products. Her talk reflected the importance of diversification in today s agricultural world. Jennifer s wide ranging talk linked a number of areas from farming as nature intended, cooking hog roasts, to having parts, albeit via their wide range of animals in recent films and T.V. shows. These have included Dracula (soon to be released) and A Game of Thrones. Of course, if you have been watching Blandings you may note some animals from Forthill Farm, especially the pigs. However, filming aside, Jennifer s reflections on her work were a reminder that it is not really all glamorous. The real business of Forthill Farm is traditional Pork and Beef. Animals are reared on the farm, butchered at the farm and sold in the farm shop. The beef cattle kept are Belted Galloways and Longhorn cattle. They produce beautiful marbled tender meat. All beef is hung and matured for a minimum of 21 days. Pork is produced from Forthill s prizewinning herd of British Saddleback and Gloucester Old Spot pigs reared outside naturally, obtaining essential iron and minerals. After a most enjoyable talk there was an opportunity to do some shopping for beef and pork products. As a result of this, breakfast, lunch and dinner for BOVC members, and their families, will be even more superior as Forthill Farm products will be on their plates. If you did not get an opportunity to hear the talk do check out their website at Marian McGreevy
10 CLASSIC CAR SHOW SLIEVE DONARD HOTEL 2014 Once again the organisers are to be congratulated on their selection of cars on display t this annual display in aid of Cancer Research NI. The terrible weather did not deter the many car fanatics who braved the heavy rain and strong winds to attend this wonderful display of cherished vehicles. Many of the vehicles on display belonged to members of the Banbridge Old Vehicle Club, whose members were the main organisers of this annual event. On display were a Saab owned by David Kincaid, a Ford Anglia Estate owned by Richard Bingham, a BMW 2002 owned by our secretary Sheila Adair, a Standard owned by David Lauro, a Wolseley owned by Billy Burrowes and a Lanchester owner by Ray Connolly to name but a few. If I have missed mentioning any cars owned by other members I apologise as my memory is not what it used to be. Other cars on display were a beautiful 1936 Rolls Royce, an Austin Mini Cooper which started its life as one of those notorious RUC Q cars, an Austin A 35, an Austin Allegro in Police Livery, a Morris MO, a Morris Minor Convertible, a Rover P4 95, a Metro Rally Car, an MGB and several other makes which have missed my memory. As usual on display was the wonderful restoration work carried out by Archie Alderdice. This was a truly magnificent array of vehicles displayed in a great setting in aid of a very important charity. Here s looking forward to next year s show. Myreve Chambers
