CHAIRMAN S PAGE June is here again and our busy summer activities are in full swing. On a snowy night at the end of March Autoglym came to Banbridge Rugby Club and demonstrated their car care products. Some members availed of favourable prices to buy their favourite products. Our first outing of the summer season The Herron Run, in April allowed us, after leaving Corrs Corner, to visit the Woodside Brothers Classic and exotic car collection at Ballynure. After a short drive we reached Carnfunnock Country Park for our picnic lunch/ walkabout. Further along the Antrim Coast we headed inland to visit Slemish Mountain What a view before passing through Broughshane for our evening meal in Ballymena. A visit to the Titanic Pump House and Dry Dock in April was enlivened by our very witty and extremely knowledgeable tour guide Colin. The engineering skills and capabilities of 100 years ago were evident and were brought home to us in the guided tour and video presentation afterwards. The May Run started Dromore s Civic Week and took us through the countryside to Delamont Country Park for our picnic lunch. From there we followed a spectacular costal drive through Strangford, Ardglass and Tyrella, visiting the Butterfly Farm at Seaforde before finishing with a meal at Spa Golf Club. We even saw a 100 year old Belfast Tram on our Journey!!. Kitty Jim Black s 1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost attracted a lot of attention at our Classic Car Display at Sprucefield. 150 other beautiful cars brought smiles to the faces of the large crowd that attended our charity show which raised 1000 for the Northern Ireland Children s Hospice. On the last Tuesday in May we were greeted by Councillor Christopher Stalford, the High Sheriff of Belfast when we had the privilege of a conducted tour of the newly refurbished Belfast City Hall. The magnificent building was seen in all its glory and splendour while our classic cars were parked in the courtyard at the rear. By the time you read this, the Annual Banbridge Cavalcade will have taken place, as will the Bronte Run this year from Hillsborough to the Somme Heritage Centre and on to Donaghadee. Our June club night takes us to Raymond Walls collection where we can view his massive collection of petrol pump globes, enamel signs, badges, lamps, classic cars and vintage trucks etc. a sausage sizzle is included. The annual T.T. Run in July starts near Richill and takes us through the beautiful apple orchard country around Loughgall before a picnic stop at the Palace Stables in Armagh. From there we take a scenic drive to a wonderful viewpoint where we can experience some magnificent views of many counties of Ireland before travelling further to Tandragee for our meal. July is also the perfect time to visit the Rose Gardens in the Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park at Upper Malone Road where we can park our Classic Cars in front of Wilmont House. Our Stanley Woods Run in August starts at the Scrabo Garden Centre finishing with an afternoon at the Co.Down Steam Traction Rally at its new venue in Greyabbey. On the last Tuesday in August we pay a visit to Tom Herron when we will have the Opportunity of seeing his massive collection of automemorabilia, tractors, classic cars, steam engines, model cars and trains and many others. A truly wonderful experience not to be missed. As you can see another full programme of events has been planned for the next few months.my sincere thanks to all who have had any part in organising or assisting with our club events. Please come along and support them with your presence, and your old cars, and enjoy the company of other members of the Banbridge Old Vehicle Club. Ken McDevitte, Chairman

MARSHALLING Memories with Banbridge Old Vehicle Club When the Chairman approached me to put pen to paper and record my memories of Marshalling with Banbridge OVC, I pondered as what to write, but after some thought of all the wonderful people I had the pleasure of meeting with and the great fundays out at the various events, I endeavour to put something together that may stir some memories for others who may also have taken part in some of the events. Shortly after the club was founded and when the official club runs started proper, it soon became clear that the vehicle drivers did not want the bother of maps or route sheets, so we motorcyclists took up the challenge of manning the various turns and road junctions. The early events were the responsibility of Ivan Dennison with his young blond haired (pony tailed) daughter Leanne as pillion, on their cc James Captain and myself with my daughter Noleen ( about 10 years old ) on our cc B.S.A. Bantam. The first events would have vehicles out, Bronte country, Mournes area and Dromara mountains as favourites of the time. The first events were mostly organised and lead by Herbie Heslip closely followed by Johnson Clarke, the club soon increased in numbers and the events became larger and more frequent. Events became established as annual dates ie the Bronte Run, Herron Run, T.T. Run, Stanley Woods Run etc. After a few more years, club members increased and some motor-cyclists became available to help with the marshalling duties, numbers of vehicles out on runs of app was not unusual. When the last car passed you at a corner it became quite a job to get back up to the front again. I next bought a 250cc B.S.A. C15 and Ivan a CX Honda, Brian Corbett, Billy Sterrit and John Corkey joined our ranks and occasionally David Coombes left his Wolseley at home and came motor-cycling. The extra help made things much easier, others helped on occasions at some events, sorry I have forgotten who they were. Good memories of making friends with members ie, Bernie and Nan Cregan, the Carroll Brothers, Dick Graham, Joe Cantley, Ivan Adair and many, many more, too numerous to mention in this write-up. One Saturday Herbie had organised the T.T.Run, we had some visitors out as well, the numbers for this event was approximately 80 vehicles. Herbie used his influence and all were hosted by Lisburn Borough Council for morning tea / coffee and scones, gradually proceeding via Dundonald Corner and onwards to Newtownards, into the middle of Saturday afternoon shoppers. It must have taken 1 hour to get everyone clear of this traffic chaos (with many unhappy shoppers). Herbie in his big Lagonda and Sidney Gilmore in his big Bently with its blower out front, re-enacted the T.T. with a flat out scorch from Newtownards to Comber. When we finally got clear of Newtownards and caught up with Herbie and co parked up on the Belfast side of Comber he was a little agitated at our delay. Bill and Philip Forsythe and Noel McKeown from Dromore gradually joined our ranks and by this time our marshalling duties had extended to helping at A.O.V.C. events. I bought a 600cc B.M.W. and later an R.S.100 B.M.W. (1000 cc) as more power made it easier to make ones way back up front. It was excellent the way the car drivers watched closely in their mirrors (we always rode on dipped headlights) and moved over in the road to allow the marshals past. The final advancement to our marshalling exploits was when Bill Forsythe persuaded the company off the Boucher Road, that supplies N.I. Ambulance Service with radios to supply 3 radios which were fitted to Bill s, Philip s and my bikes, thus we could keep in contact from front and back, a great help in the event of a breakdown. Like all great things must come to an end, the marshals came to a time when we were no longer required on club runs, as things had changed and route sheets became popular as part of the days fun. Sadly some of the people mentioned in this article are no longer with us, but they all left me with great memories. Finally, I would like to wish the club success in the years ahead and thank the Banbridge O.V.C. for so many happy and treasured memories. Mervyn Allen

SPRUCEFIELD CLASSIC CAR DISPLAY This years Annual Classic Car Display at Sprucefield was bigger and better than ever with over 150 cars of all ages and description taking part. The star of the show was Jim Black s beautiful 100 year old 1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, once owned by the Marchioness of Downshire, Lady Katie Hill of Hillsborough Castle. Standing beside it was its younger brother, only 82 years old, a 1923 Rolls Royce 20 HP Saloon belonging to Raymond Megaw. At the other end of the scale were the Funny cars:- a little 1970 Orange 3 wheeled wedge shaped car with a lift up front door called a Bond Bug!. A little Dutch Car called a DAf with belts to drive the rear wheels. Two Citroen 2CV Dollys and two American Willys Army Jeeps. Of course there were several minis, Ford Anglias, Morris Minors, Ford Escorts, Austin, Vanden Plas and MG 1100/1300 s, A40, Capri, Hillman, Triumph, Volvo, Alvis as well as MG sports cars, Mercedes, Jaguar E Type, Lancia Fluvia, Lotus, Porche, and the latest Ferrari F430 super car. The star of the competition cars was Dessie McCartney s MG Metro 6R4 Rally car. A great selection of cars from every decade over the last 100 years and a large dose of nostalgia was evident throughout the display. The words I remember those when they were new were heard often during the day. Owners and spectators generously donated 1000 to the Northern Ireland Children s Hospice and McDonalds assisted with vouchers for entrants.

THE HERRON RUN The First event of 2010 commenced on Saturday, 10th April when a wonderful selection of cars assembled at the Corrs Corner Hotel. Drivers and passengers enjoyed Tea, Coffee and Scones. We set off in convoy to Woodside Haulage where on arrival we where warmly received and welcomed by Ian & Robert Woodside. On opening up locked garages many, if not all members, were amazed at a magnificent collection of cars, some of which are rarely seen now on our roads. One electric bicycle reminded me of the cyclemaster which some members of a certain age will no doubt recall. I have to admit I was jealous, not just of the car collection, but of the heating system which ensured the treasures rested in comfort. To prove that the cars were not just show pieces Robert kindly started up and drove out a Jaguar, (I think it was an XK140 with the engine emitting that lovely purr ). Leaving Ballynure we drove through Larne and arrived at Carnfunnock Park where the Council staff had reserved adequate parking spaces for club cars. Members enjoyed sitting out in the glorious sunshine for their picnic lunch while the public examined & admired our cars. Fed & watered the convoy moved on towards Ballygally, where we observed children playing in the sea & sand. The next leg of our trip took a turn towards the hills & breathtaking views of the surrounding country-side were enjoyed (while keeping our eyes on the road). Our next stop was in the footsteps of St Patrick & upwards to Slemish - the sheep are still there! Some members, including the Chairman, ventured the climb to embrace the panoramic views. The convoy moved down hill towards Broughshane & onwards to the final stop at the Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena. The carvery was up to the usual good standard and as they say a good day was had by all. We record our thanks and appreciation to Richard & Wendy Gregory for all their efforts in organising such a wonderful day - including the sunshine. John Miskelly

MAY RUN As our starting venue was Dromore Presbyterian Church I was looking forward to driving the Hillman back to her home town where Bill Forsythe, who when serving his apprenticeship, would have been sent to take the car out so that the two female owners could go off for a short drive which was more than I could do that Saturday morning. My problem was that when running the engine for some time and switching her off she failed to start again. At 8.45am Robina and I set off in our old faithful Riley Elf and were pleased with ourselves that we were the first to arrive at Dromore Presbyterian Church only to discover by 10.00am we were at 2nd when we should have been at 1st Presbyterian Church. With an hour to spend we enjoyed a time of great fellowship with lots of coffee, tea and scones kindly provided by the ladies of the church.having received meticulously prepared instruction down to the last 1/3 of a mile plus some verbal instructions, 28 gleaming classics set off for what was to be a most memorable days driving through some of the beautiful and majestic countryside of County Down. Leaving Dromore we travelled through Ballynahinch, Carryduff, Killyleagh and on to Delamount Country Park for our picnic stop and a welcome break for the old faithful (no not the drivers) classics, considering the pace set by Stanley Bowman in his Morris 8! Following a welcome break we continued our run through Strangford, Ardglass, Tyrella, Clough & Seaforde where we made a very interesting visit to the Butterfly Farm, besides the Butterflys and the other tiny creatures were the Peacocks and their most spectacular display which evoked some remarks such as not tonight Josephine. Then it was on to the Spa Golf Club where we enjoyed a lovely meal served to us by friendly efficient and smiling waitresses. Looking back on the run there were some memorable sights. The first was the lovely memorial gardens in memory of Harry Ferguson. The next was the first Wave Farm to make electricity in Strangford Lough. Then there was a most interesting stop to see parked in a garden a Belfast Tram. The present owner told us that the day it was delivered a man standing outside the local pub couldn t believe what he was seeing. When his companion emerged from the pub his friend said, you will never believe what I have just seen passing, a Belfast Tram to which came the response, I m the one who has been drinking. Many thanks to Stanley Bowman & Dennis Mitchell for organising a wonderful run. Congratulations to Tony Gardiner on being presented with the Cup for the most interesting car as selected by the waitress. Jim Stewart

MUSEUM DEVELOPMENT AT CULTRA Photographs by Courtesy of UFTM The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum became responsible for transport in 1969 as a consequence of updating the1958 Ulster Folk Museum Act resulting in the amalgamation of the then Belfast City Transport Museum at Witham Street. Prior to this the Ulster Folk Museum at Cultra was set in 140 acres to record, illustrate and demonstrate the Ulster way of life at about For the purposes of inclusion, all relevant forms of transport which cannot be divorced from the rural life style were located on a further 40 acre site and big house which was purchased at Dalchoolin directly across the main A2 Belfast Bangor road and main line railway. This site extends from the main road to the shore of Belfast Lough. An interesting and appropriate interconnecting access bridge was constructed soon afterwards to facilitate and integrate both sites. In general terms the way of life in Ulster at that time was predominately rural and the Museum built a series of cottages, houses, churches and halls, schools etc all faithfully represented and sited in as near as possible to the topography at their original location. While the majority of buildings have actually been donated to the Museum and transferred to Cultra to be faithfully and accurately rebuilt, in some cases this was not possible, in which case a replica was accurately constructed, and of course furnished. In the context of accuracy, it is imperative that all relevant features be included, for example documents, furnishings and equipment to enable the whole life cycle including wealth generation to be illustrated.

Obviously a complete kaleidoscope of the Ulster way of life must include all forms of activity each complimenting the other. While the vast majority of people living in a rural Ulster at this time could only exist by farming, many other occupations such as blacksmiths, joiners, builders, teachers, ministers, shoe makers, weavers, butchers, grocers, thatchers etc. augmented the rural population and were supported by them. The inclusion of such essential crafts and activities together with appropriate forms of transport neatly integrate both the Folk and Transport collections as in real life. As times progressed, basic signs of urbanisation began to appear in the form of development in a more concentrated form near a church, centre of communication, river access etc and by small villages and towns some with roads, railways, canals and other services were commonplace. Cultra is no exception as the small village of Ballycultra provides a village scape for a church, bank, court house, a selection of shops and service providers including a shoe maker, cycle shop, and butcher. and others. At the time reference period of the Museum, public transport in rural areas would be extremely scant, limited to horse drawn, cycles with steam trains, trams and / or tram cars serving larger urban areas. At Cultra such an appropriate bus and also horse drawn transport has already been tried but not with any degree of success due to the topography of the site and also fluctuating demand. Turning to the transport museum, the reference period has to be much more flexible so the terms of reference would have to be to illustrate all forms of transport used in Ulster. This obviously widens very considerably the time period to include early transport C BC.until the present day. With the exception of the many transport items, particularly horse drawn and cycle already integrated within the rural and urban life style displays, the vast number of items at Cultra are located in the following galleries. Road (1) Early transport / horse drawn (2) Horse drawn vehicles (3) Cycle (4) Motor Cycle (5) Motor Car (6) Commercial and Public Transport Rail Rail The largest collection in Ireland of main gauge (5 3 ) and narrow gauge (3 ) together with many technical displays, models etc.set in a railway context. (1) Horse drawn and manual (2) Electric trams (3) Steam drawn --Main gauge - Narrow gauge (4) Other Maritime Several full scale boats on display 1893 Result - schooner built by John Rodgers in Carrickfergus Donaghadee life boat Newcastle life boat 1887 Mary Joseph fishing boat built in Kilkeel Vast collection of Harland & Wolff Ltd Ship plans Large collection of models.

Aviation Many aircraft made in Ulster in storage with few on display due to space limitations Replica of Harry Ferguson s first plane. Short Sealand, Short Sion and SC1 Miles twin engined pre-war plane Tiger Moth biplane Various models and photographs Road Gallery Considerable collection of all types of vehicles used here in Ulster all of which are in working order. Indeed the Museum were instrumental in entering several significant cars in Co Operation North Rallies in the 1980 s and other events to display vehicles in action. It has always been my aim that an exhibit should also be usable as well as it looks, and also an underlying policy to acquire relevant Ulster made, designed and used items with the result that the Museum is rich in many significant vehicles, for example the McCandless collection, the Fergus and OD cars. There are hundreds of horse drawn vehicles, bicycles, motor cycles and cars both on display and in the reserve collection, all of which are essential to represent the many technical features and show how technology has adopted, modified and improved the product. Prior to the early 1980 s,most vehicles were on loan but since then a deliberate policy was adopted to acquire either by kind donation, exchange or purchase relevant items to fill gaps in the collection. Many of these most valuable vehicles were the subject of most generous corporate and private donations and all the many exhibits possess a detailed pedigree or providence. All the collection has a most interesting story and history. The vehicle collection does not end here as there are also a considerable comprehensive collection of early agricultural equipment, of machinery all of local significance. Other important collections are; (1) Audio library. Interviews of many prominent persons who made a significant contribution to the Ulster lifestyle egg. Harry Ferguson, Stanley Woods, Rex McCandless. also BBC material (2) Photographic library Green collection Lawrence collection. Hogg collection. Talbot Frith collection, BBC material. (3) Library of periodicals, newspapers etc from 1734 to date (4) Research. Ongoing work in connection with the Ulster way of life. As can be seen this resource is virtually limitless, and being a National resource, is owned by you the tax payer. Do visit Cultra and use its enormous potential. Eric McCleery - Curator

Snow fell across the country at the end of March and Banbridge Rugby Club was left in a layer of thick snow over all the cars on the night of our March meeting. Ken Geary snowed in up in Keady, The Glenshane Pass was closed with 120 vehicles abandoned and over300 people stranded up there for the night. A good crowd managed to make it to Banbridge for the annual visit of Autoglym. Victor Babb Autoglym s Regional Manager put on a display of their famous car care products and provider some worthwhile demonstrations of some of their latest items. Since this had to be done indoors, due to the inclement weather, Victor broughtthe front wing of his Westfield Sports Car with him to demonstrate the qualities andeffect of Autoglym Clay has on cleaning vehicle bodywork. The used clay was passed E CLUB around the audience for them to see the contamination which had accumulated on it. A very impressive Demonstration. Before going home everyone was given a free DVD by Autoglym and Sheila and Wendy provided tea/coffee and biscuits for the journey home. Most people availed of the opportunity to purchase their favourite car care products at discount prices. Many thanks to Victor Babb of Autoglym Ken McDevitte

April CLUB NIGHT Our April club night took the form of a visit to the Titanic Dock and Pump House. About a dozen classic cars and thirty people attended and we were given a guided tour of the dock and pump house by our guide for the evening Colin Cobb This was both very informative and humorous. The dock remains in its original state when constructed and has been well preserved as part of the heritage ahd history of shipbuilding in Belfast. We were told how the Titanic was built as a hull in the slipway then towed to the outside of the Thompson Dock as it was known then and fitted out, the engines were fitted the upper decks and funnels added and a full fit out completed. It was only after this work was done that the Titanic was pulled into the dry dock for the hull to be painted and the propellers fitted. We were told how the water was pumped out of the dock to allow the men to work on the hull and our tour of the pump house explained how the massive pumps were able to remove all the water, literally thousands of gallons of water in a very short space of time. The dry dock was constructed before the Titanic was ever thought about and when it was decided to move it into the dock it was discovered that it was too long, however when the dock was made the door was constructed in such a way that it would float and could be moved to a location really meant for maintenance purposes which gave the extra length needed. The door was floated away from the dock, Titanic pulled in, and the door put in the outer position to allow for all the work to be completed. We were also given information regarding the Titanic s sister ships which helped to complete the story. A short video of old film footage was shown to a captive audience in the Pump House and we were able to see some of the tools used during the construction of the Titanic. We all adjourned to the café for much appreciated refreshments. Our thanks go to Colin for his very enjoyable presentation. Michael McKay

BOVC Visit to Belfast City Hall On Tuesday 25th May, sixty club members and friends met at Belfast City Hall. Many brought their classic cars and twenty-eight club vehicles were able to avail of parking in the inner quadrangle. The evening began with a welcome and short address from the High Sheriff of Belfast. We then moved to the Entrance Hall and Grand Staircase to begin the tour. Our guide, Damien McDonald, provided an interesting commentary on the history and notable features of the building. Completed in 1906 after almost ten years of planning and construction it occupies the site of the former White Linen Hall. The entire project was financed by two years of profits from Belfast Gasworks what price was gas in 1906!?! Ascending the Grand Staircase, decorated with Italian and Greek marble, we were then able to look upwards to appreciate the magnificent central Dome and Whispering Gallery. The first floor contains an extensive collection of portraits, many showing the familiar faces of past Lord Mayors. Our group then filed into the Council Chamber and took our seats ready for a debate. Several members were able to oversee proceedings from the Lord Mayor s chair and kept the meeting in order! We then moved to the Reception and Banqueting Halls, which contain several items of Titanic memorabilia. The final stop was the Great Hall. This still contains its original stained glass windows which survived the Belfast Blitz having been removed and sent to Downpatrick for safekeeping. Many thanks to Michael McKay for organising such an enjoyable evening. The large turnout was most encouraging and we look forward to the next club event. Mark Bridgham
