IRMA Although many of us have been skeptical of the idea of a Calusa Indian burial ground or other spiritual protections from hurricanes affecting the Venice Nokomis area, there is certainly no dispute that we escaped what could have been a major disaster to our homes and community when Irma turned East rather than continue up the West Florida coast much like Charlie did in Mary and I planned on riding out the storm at home since we have wind resistant doors and windows and a relatively new roof, but late Saturday evening when the storm was reported to be moving more westerly and could generate a storm surge in Venice between feet, we loaded the car with 2 dogs and 2 cats and left at midnight for Atlanta. Driving north on I-75 was uncrowded at that time but the rest areas were packed. We made the mistake of returning on Tuesday after the storm and took part in the 350-mile traffic jam of returning evacuees. By then the rest areas were mobbed, some without power or water and all with
terribly overused bathroom facilities. Luckily, and with the help of several Sorrento Woods neighbors who stayed, we suffered minimal damage to our property. What follows are some of the thoughts and experiences of other Sorrento Woods residents and friends. Hi all- we were so fortunate! Our house felt really safe, the power only flickered a few times but is still on. A large maple tree in the back of the yard fell over without touching. anything. Otherwise, just a lot of leaves and twigs to clean up. Hope everyone else is ok. Jan and Joe We were not there, but because of a great neighbor our hurricane shutters were put in place along with maintaining a close watch before, during, and after the storm. Olness Family Good to hear from everyone, our place experienced some damage to the cage - need to replace some screening. I think the worst of it all was the coverage by CNN. What a relief that the actual outcome did not play out as the worst case scenario. Peter Kreppenhofer Jim and I are on a cruise in the Baltics. Now that we know our house is OK, we can relax and enjoy it! See you soon. Lois Weeks Thanks to kathy, we have pics and house looks good from outside. A nice large tree is laying right next to us but missed us!! For those who don't know, we had a house fire here in Maryland a week and half ago. Dealing with smoke issues, replacing things etc., having things cleaned, they even took all electronic items out of house including computer, tvs, ipads, kindle, kitchen mixer, microwave and they pick up the stove tomorrow, so we can't come down. Probably have to repaint first floor, replace some kit cabs, reclean the carpets that aren't satisfactory etc. They trashed all window honeycomb shades without even telling us!!! I could go on and on. Miss u all and hope to make it by October. Would appreciate prayers from those of u who r prayer warriors. Thanks. Janet Knight We had no structural damage. Lost some limbs out back and had some yard debris to clean up. We evacuated to SC, but thanks to the good neighbors in SW, we received updates! I would say overall; our neighborhood was pretty lucky! Deb Jackson We would have never made it home from Georgia last night without someone in our "caravan" carrying gas cans - there was no gas anywhere and when there were the lines were so long they were clogging up the highway from the exit. I was very lucky to get gas today in Nokomis because I happened to check "Gas Buddy" at the right time - people were acting like maniacs at the gas station Brenda and I were originally planning on staying at home in SW, but saw the hurricane taking a more westerly track and at the last minute decided to go up to our daughter's in Jacksonville, leaving at 3:00 am Saturday and then came back home Monday around 6:30. We were pretty tired and turned in early Monday night. We assessed the minor damage the next morning of 2 blown out screen panels in the pool cage and picked up some scattered limbs/debris around our yard this morning and also helped a number of neighbors around Wyeth Dr. do cleanups in their yards. We didn't lose any power except for maybe some slight glitches. Going to take down the storm shutters Wed. and continue cleanups around our addition. Upon returning to the neighborhood, Bill and Brenda Kall immediately began to assess the damage and organized volunteer residents to help clean up the debris from the downed trees in our park. Huge piles
of tree and brush debris appeared on all our streets. Then we got word that the Sarasota County green waste pickup trucks would not be in our area until at least the end of November. DJ Desjardins, Sorrento Woods neighbor and owner of Absolute Aluminum, generously donated the use of a large trailer, dump truck, and Skid steer accompanied by professional driver, Chandler. Bill and Brenda Kall worked with Absolute Aluminum s helpful staff and organized a neighborhood clean-up crew that has worked many hours to load and haul off all of the green debris from Irma over the last weeks. Thank you to all of the volunteers including Bill & Brenda Kall, Dan Parrett, Tom Carter, Peg Rooney, Bob Laird, Dave Thie, Mike Olinger, Jim Weeks, Torsten Hartmann, James Stinger, Joe D Ambrosio, Kathy Black, Sam Santeufemia, Kelley Berta, Gene & Deb Jackson, Jea Coffman, Dave Muir, Jack & Kathy Carroll, Bob & Janet Knight, Mark Macler, Allen & Kate Sutton, Jeff Daughtry, and Bob Craver.
Of Interest: There is some confusion about the purpose and response to the alarm boxes on the side of our houses. These are sewer alarms and my flash and produce an audible signal when there is a malfunction of the sewer pump system. These occur most often during heavy rains when ground water may invade the system and overburden the pump which is under the circular cement cover in each of our front yards. The appropriate response of the owner in case of such and alarm is to call the Sarasota County Utility at (941) They respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please remember that this and other useful numbers are added to the back of the Sorrento Woods Phone Directory. The annual Sorrento Woods Community Picnic will be held Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the North Jetty Park Pavilion on Casey Key. Hamburgers, hot dogs, brats & fixings along with table service will be provided by the Sorrento Woods HOA. Please bring you preferred beverage and a dish to share. Odd number addresses are asked to bring a hot dish; even addresses a cold dish. Volunteers are always appreciated to help set-up, grill, and clean-up. Please contact Kathy Carroll to volunteer at (815) or kathycarroll@usa.com The Sorrento Woods Ladies Lunch Bunch is now well established as an enjoyable monthly get together taking place at a different restaurant on the 4 th Wednesday of the month. Locations are announced on the Sorrento Woods Nextdoor website or by contacting Kathy Carroll at kathycarroll@usa.com We hope the neighbors are enjoying the new benches placed around the property by Bill Kall and his volunteer crew. We are giving residents the opportunity to dedicate a bench with a plaque for $100 or to actually purchase a bench with a $500 donation which includes two plaques. For further information please contact Kathy Carroll at kathycarroll@usa.com The Sorrento Woods HOA annual meeting will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the Nokomis Community Center at 234 Nippino Trail in Nokomis. You should receive a packet in the mail by late December. If you have any questions or do not receive a packet, please contact Kelley Berta at (941) or at kelley_berta@hotmail.com Even the alligators are happy with our new signs. Please remember that only residents and their guests are allowed to fish in the ponds and lakes. It is important to carefully monitor children and pets while playing around the water as there definitely are alligators present and at times they can be of significant size. There are also snakes near the water and while most of them are harmless southern banded water snakes, poisonous water moccasins have occasionally been seen. The many birds that also enjoy our water features are a welcome addition to our neighborhood and should not be harassed in any way. We also ask that there be no net fishing in the ponds and that all pet waste be removed and properly disposed of. Ron and Gail Harmon have volunteered to distribute luminaria supplies again this year from their home at 1289 Vermeer. Remember to hold onto your concrete bases. More info later.
From the Board - Kelley Berta Welcome to all the new homeowners who have arrived in Sorrento Woods this year! Please feel free to attend Board meetings on the second Tuesday evening of each month. The agenda is posted at the front entrance of the neighborhood and on sorrentowoods.org 48 hours prior to each meeting. Please contact the secretary in advance (secretary@sorrentowoods.org) to ensure adequate seating is available. We have a new America flag flying at the front entrance to Sorrento Woods! Hurricane Irma gave the old one a good beating. Thanks to Bill Kall, Maintenance Chair on the Board, for procuring a new flag and replacing the old one. A big thank you to all the homeowners who, after receiving notifications, took corrective action to bring their home sites into compliance. As we drive into and out of our garages daily, it s easy to overlook something that needs attention. If you walk to your neighbor s house and take a look at your own from a different perspective, you might just find things that unfortunately fail to meet compliance with the SW Deed Restrictions. Better to address them before someone else takes note. Reminder to all homeowners that a Building Application is required before any new construction, exterior modification, alteration, change or addition is started on your home. It is the homeowner's responsibility to ensure building approval is obtained prior to construction. Go to sorrentowoods.org/restrictions.html to review your Deed Restrictions and find the Building Application. Corrected phone directories were delivered throughout the neighborhood recently (the old one was yellow; the corrected one is white). If you did not receive a corrected Directory, please contact Brenda Kall at bkall1974@gmail.com. Homeowners are reminded that common property within SW is managed by the Board of Directors. No changes are to be made to common property by homeowners. If you see something that should be corrected on common grounds, please contact the Board at secretary@sorrentowoods.org. Board members cannot enforce the law or Sarasota County ordinances. Residents are reminded that annoyances such as loud parties or illegal parking should be reported to the Sarasota County Sheriff s Department at This and other helpful phone numbers are listed on the back page of the Sorrento Woods Phone Directory. Any webmasters/webspinners living in the neighborhood that might be interested in helping update the sorrentowoods.org site, please contact Kelley Berta at secretary@sorrentowoods.org. Please note: There is renewed interest in discontinuing the printed edition of the newsletter and converting to on-line format on the Sorrento Woods website. Printed editions would only be available by request. This change could take place with the first newsletter of Now is the time to express your opinion directly to the board. Condolences to the family of Harold J. Sussman, who died August 26, 2017
