3 PRESIDENT S LETTER Karen Jacobs While riding through Missouri a few weeks ago, I realized the only performance award (speeding ticket) on my driving record was in the spring of 2008 while nearing a town called Mexico. The young officer (all of 25 years old I would guess) was nice enough to make small talk as he wrote out my only ticket in nearly 30 years. I smiled, while cursing under my breath and asked where the nearest motel was. He said don t stop in Mexico. It made me wonder if he meant the country or the Missouri city. This time I was quite aware of the speed limit, even though members Dennis & Wendy passed me along the same highway on my return home from the MOA Rally. And speaking of the MOA rally; hats off to the MOA, the Board, the Rally Chairs and all the volunteers that made this a very memorable rally. The threats of extreme heat kept some away, but I believe all that attended from our club enjoyed themselves. No flaming cars, closing ceremony in less than an hour and in an air-conditioned arena! Now that s the way to finish off a rally. And no, I did not win a jacket. I did however win a set of Rok-Straps as a door prize. Good thing, as I destroyed one of mine after arriving in Sedalia. The Wisconsin Club resort, provided by hosts Bob & Diane, had its own pool, although there were times when there was no lifeguard on duty. After the disappointment of not winning those free motorcycles I predicted for the women in our club, we gathered at poolside for a relaxing evening before the long trek back to Cheesetown. It didn t take long for the pool to be full, if only by the un-named two Bobs. The Wisconsin Club was well represented by no less than 34 members and S.O. s. And thanks to Tina and her new truck for being the club support vehicle to haul back stuff for many of our campers. The ride back home was less painful than anticipated due to temps in the 80 s and low 90 s. The lower than expected attendance made staffing some of the volunteer positions difficult. That s something we experience from time to time putting on our famous Dells Rally. I hope each of you take the time to sign up for time slots again this year. We really need your help. Register online to attend, then sign up for a few shifts. You know, you can sign up for more than two shifts. There s no law against it. It s how we ve become a successful rally for over 40 years. Corser Bends Earth s Axis,Wheelies 70s BMW Superbike by Chase Winstead Friday, July 06, 2012 Spectators at the Goodwood festival in England witnessed a rare sight: now retired two-time WSBK champion Troy Corser took a ex-mclaughlin BMW R90S out for a spin and apparently kicked the earth s axis over a few degrees and successfully wheelied the fragile old Frau bike up the hill. Also on the very same day, also in England, physicists discovered Higgs boson, a tiny subatomic particle which may one day make time travel possible, explain how the universe was formed and find the illusive planet of lost dryer socks. We feel strongly that these two clearly atomic events are related. Stay tuned....did it shatter when he sat it back down? Corser wheelies an ex McLaughlin BMW Superbike at Goodwood. 7 RIDE REPORT/NEWS How I Came to be Grandpa Tumbleweed by Harv Read How did a man from Wisconsin wind up with a handle like that? Such a moniker would be more fitting draped around a sun-baked Prospector from Rattlesnake Gulch, Arizona. Although I do love the desert South West. As long as I can remember I have enjoyed riding there. The grand vistas, with truncated mountains called Buttes. Air so clean and dry, you can see for more than 100 miles. Dry lakes that haven t seen an inch of water in a thousand years. Wherever erosion has made a cut, you can see dozens of layers deposited at the bottom of ancient oceans long gone, sort of like looking back in time a billion years or more. An almost total absence of people. The cactus and the tumbleweed. July 28th: The Women of Mayhem Ride Girls Rule, Guys Drool by Becky Policht On Saturday, June 28th Karen Jacobs, Jeanne Cohen, Joy Kuenzi, Christine Ledezma, Sarah Berg, Karen Smith, Sue Rihn, Janet Magin, and I rode the southern Kettle Moraine area. Karen Smith was nice enough to create and bring commemorative stickers for all. Thanks Karen! Before we left we had a lengthy discussion about performance awards that we ve received and those that we got out of simply by removing our helmets (Don t bother trying it guys. It will never work for you.). Needless to say, half a mile out we encountered our first LEO pointing his radar gun at us. He never made any attempt to follow. One man against nine women he knew he didn t stand a chance. For the next hour and a half, we rode the twisties. We made one U-turn, although it was not because we were lost (and if we were lost we would have stopped and asked for directions). We did it because we are damn good at it. If you ever see one, you will have no doubt what it is. It looks for all the world like a beach-ball made out of twigs, and goes slowly bouncing across the desert with only a slight breeze pushing it. It would make a good holiday decoration if we ever start celebrating Saint Dry-Spell. Anyway, the name: Some of my grandchildren live in Northern Illinois and haven t traveled much. During a visit some years ago, I was telling them about my motorcycle travels in the South-West, and all about the tumbleweed. How it just wanders around whichever way the wind blows. How it s never lost cause it doesn t care where it s going. One of the little girls chimed in with kinda like you, Grandpa! I smiled from deep down inside. I knew I had my handle. Grandpa Tumbleweed. Sort of reminds me of the first time I saw a Roadrunner, but that s another story. We arrived at Gus s Drive-In in East Troy as one. One. Intimidating. Bunch. So intimidating that when Sue asked a couple of people if they would take our picture they ran, ran away and never looked back. Sue then approached a HD dude and asked him to take our picture. I wasn t close enough to hear what she said to him but I had to wipe his tears off of my camera when he gave it back. Our ride over and ice cream eaten, we rode again. Left behind were broken hearts and trouble. Mayhem if you will Grandpa Tumbleweed The Iron horse hotel 2012 Bike Night Lineup: 8/2 - Ducati Night featuring Ducati Milwaukee 8/9 - BMW Night w/schlossmann s Power Sports 8/16 - KTM night featuring HMC Racing 8/23 - Erik Buell Racing/EBR Motorcycles 8/30 - BUILD Moto Mentor Program bike auction 9/6 - Chopper Night with Jr's Cycles 9/13 - Ladies Bike Night with the Diamond Posse 7

8 2012 MOA RALLY IN SEDALIA, MO Photos courtesy of Miro Sapozhnikov What a blast we had. Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers who made this a super rally. The Wisconsin club pulled together and served beer Thursday night from 8pm-midnight and had a lot of fun, as you can see from the pics. The entertainment, seminars and vendors gave us plenty to choose from and kept us as busy as we wanted to be - or not. A big thanks to Diane and Bob the Mer-man Lannin for setting up a pool and creating an oasis for us to gather in the shade of a nearby building. The days were hot (but there was a pretty constant breeze) and the nights were cool enough to sleep comfortably. Plus, there were plenty of air-conditioned buildings on the grounds to cool off in. Awesome! 8

9 Honey I Ain t Got Much Money Rides! In the quest for inexpensive weekend outings, I ve located the following (some with the help of friends). Don t have a clue what we ll experience with some of these but that s part of the adventure. August 3-5, 2012 Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Rally. The price sounds right. Registration is $35 if you pre-register. Camping at Lake Joy Campground. What do you get? Wisconsin s best grilled brats and burgers Friday evening, ham, turkey and beef Saturday evening and deluxe continental breakfasts Saturday and Sunday morning. Wisconsin s finest refreshments, including soft drinks, will flow from the artesian taps. The rally fee includes tent camping Friday and Saturday. Lake Joy is in the heart of Wisconsin s driftless region. The campground has clean modern restrooms and showers. Go to Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Riders. August 10 12, Viola, WI. Viola Banker Park Campground. 321 W. Commercial Street, Viola, WI. Overnight Camping. Pay at the Village Hall or Viola Quick Stop. Showers, restrooms, RV sites, Kickapoo River. $8.00/night for tents and $12 for RV. Bob and Nancy Reitberger s place up nort there hey. August 25th weekend. From the mouth of Bob: There will be a carry forward charge of $ per person per night for those of you willing to sleep with the bears (if they can get there that weekend. I understand they have practice that weekend) Oh, that s the Chicago type for those of you that don t understand. (They will bring their dogs along.) If you can t come up with the cash there are other ways to earn your keep, like keeping wood on the fire. As always it is the home of what once was the cleanest outhouse in the north woods. [Haven t been there yet but it will be cleaned by then] Have plenty of room on the porch for sleeping bags. The 55 gallon barrels are full of water for your shower if needed and the outhouse was pumped out within the last 10 years. About a 4 hour ride north, just east of Rhinelander, gravel road about ¾ mile in off of pavement, easy to navigate used to do it on my LT all the time. Those of you with a rustic camping fever are all welcome fair warning this is not a luxury vacation place. (We might be there early like Wednesday or Thursday). P.S. Have a refrigerator (gas) to keep liquid refreshments cold, no running water (only when generator is running), no electricity, room for only about 100 just so you know Just so I don t forget, bring bug spray. Also there is a motel about 9 miles away if you cannot stand to be in the woods. Pre register only for space in the refrigerator, first come first served. Only fee for this is liquid refreshment for the landlord. So let s see how many camping diehards there really are in this club. The bonfire will be lit every night to keep the bears away. Also there will be a pot of Nancy s BBQ and a big bowl of potato salad, buns, chips, pickles, etc. If interested, please me. reitone@aol.com August 31 September 3, Labor Day Weekend. Blackhawk Park. Thank you to Jim and Joanne for finding this one last year. We had a great time last year so have decided to return. The cost per night is $24. Each site is allowed to have 2 tents on it. This means you can camp Labor Day weekend for a total cost of $36. What a deal. If you re interested in joining us, please book asap. This park fills up fast. Mark and I have reserved sites 49 and 50. This means we reserved for 3 more tents or pop ups. Let us know if you d like one of our spots. tinarashell333@yahoo.com Blackhawk Park is located on a forested bend of the main channel of the Mississippi River. The campground is the largest public use facility in Mississippi's Pool 9, offering a wide variety of recreational activities. This peaceful park is situated on the main channel of the Mississippi River. Cottonwoods, green ash, swamp oaks, river birch and willow trees forest the site, offering nice shade in the summer and beautiful colors in autumn. Visitors commonly see a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, blue herons, ducks, geese, whitetail deer and wild turkey. Boating, kayaking, canoeing and fishing are Blackhawk's most popular forms of recreation. Here, one can view majestic bluffs and rich backwater vegetation. Sometimes a river barge or classic paddle-wheeled steamboat can be seen journeying up the river. The campground offers 175 campsites, including 73 with electrical hookups. Flush and vault toilets, showers, and drinking water are provided, as are picnic tables and fire rings. Two picnic shelters, two boat ramps, two playgrounds, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, fishing dock, and a dump station are located on-site. Historic Battle Bluff Prairie State Natural Area is less than 10 minutes away. The site was designated in 1983 and was the location of a Black Hawk Indian War battle. The small river towns of DeSoto, Wisconsin and Lansing, Iowa are nearby. DeSoto is 10 minutes south, with a few restaurants and shops. Lansing is 15 minutes south. LaCrosse, Wisconsin is 30 minutes north, with restaurants, shops, galleries and farmers markets. Reservations: Anyone interested in any of these campouts, let s network. Since some of these are first-come, first-served it would be to our benefit to have sites saved by the early arrivals. By Tina Doggett 9

Nobody broke a nail, and everyone s hair was to die for. We drove our motor thingies on some roads that weren t very straight. That was fun! WHEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! Afterwards we stopped for ice cream that was SIMPLY DELISH! Unfortunately, one of the pictures that this hunky guy took, shows us looking kind of grumpy. (Remember, we are women.)
