1 ARNS NOTES ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED NAIT STAFF FALL 2016 ARNS PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello ARNS Members, I hope that everyone had a good summer and that you were ready for the winter like conditions that we are encountering much too early according to the calendar. My husband and I managed to go down to Antigonish, Nova Scotia at the end of September. We were able to enjoy the magnificent fall colors and weather. This year our scholarship endowment fund at NAIT allowed ARNS to award four scholarships of $500.each to four full time students and two $500 apprenticeship bursaries to two apprentice students. These endowment funds are supported by the generosity of alumni and others who give to NAIT for the benefit of the students. The NAIT it Forward Campaign is going on in October. Should you wish to support the ARNS endowment fund through this campaign it is now available as a gift check in the information package that has been mailed to ARNS members. THANK YOU to all that supported this campaign last year by volunteering and/or donating money to the campaign. The ARNS Annual General Meeting and Banquet is being held on November th at Ernest s Fine Dining at NAIT. Please check this newsletter for the details. Plan on joining your fellow retirees for an evening of merriment and camaraderie. I look forward to seeing you there. Your ARNS executive has decided to subsidize this event. If you would like to share a special milestone i.e. a birthday, anniversary, special event with us at this time please let me know at or before the banquet so that we can recognize this special time with you. How well do you remember the Children s Christmas parties at NAIT? Was it a special event in your household? Do you have pictures to share? NAIT would like to write a story to capture the history of this event as it evolved over the years. If you or anyone else you know can help NAIT with this project please contact Josh Boyd at Congratulations and welcome to the newly retired NAIT Staff members who became ARNS members. Sympathies and Condolences to the families who lost loved ones during this past year. Memories are forever. The ARNS Executive needs members to serve on the executive committee. This committee is the cement that is holding ARNS together. It is not an onerous job. Some committee members have stepped down to pursue other interests or they just want to take a break. Please consider volunteering. Contact me at I would like to chat with you! 3 EVERY GIFT COUNTS. nait.ca/naititforward #NAITitFORWARD 2016 NAIT IT FORWARD CAMPAIGN NAIT it Forward, the NAIT faculty and staff campaign (previously known as the Family Campaign), has supported student success at NAIT since Last year alone, 23% of faculty and staff participated, raising over $83,000! Stories inspired by people, technology and innovation Read it! Share it! Use it! Love it! if you ve visited techlifemag.ca recently, you may have noticed a big change. In July, the online destination for NAIT news and information since 2007 was redesigned and relaunched as techlifetoday.ca (TLT). TLT is the new home for stories about the polytechnic, our alumni and how-to features covering everything from cooking to car maintenance. It s mobile friendly, offers more new content than ever and includes social features to make it easy to share stories. Visit today for a recipe to turn those frozen turkey leftovers into a delicious mulligatawny soup, meet NAIT Paralympian Ross Wilson and bio sciences instructor and urban beekeeper Jocelyn Crocker. While you re there, sign up for the monthly newsletter. The support of NAIT s current and retired faculty and staff shows that as a community, you believe in NAIT and our students. NAIT it Forward reflects the NAIT Way values respect, collaboration, support, celebration and accountability and the generosity of paying it forward. Every gift makes a difference. There are no administration costs when you give, so 100% of the money raised will go directly to supporting our students. Thank you to everyone who has already supported the campaign. There is still time to make a gift this year contact Erin for more information or return the pledge package mailed to you in October. 4 NARROW BOATING IN WALES Submitted by Dennis Morland One of the advantages of being retired is that you can take advantage of lower travel costs in the off-seasons. Thus it was on May 2, 2016 that my wife and I took a KLM direct flight from Edmonton to Amsterdam, on our way to a narrow-boat experience in Wales. Since we had planned to stay in Amsterdam for a couple of days, in deference to our jet lag and to see some of the tourist sights, we took a train to Amsterdam Centraal station and dragged our suitcases to a nearby hotel. This location allowed us to access local attractions like the Koninklijk Paleis, the National Monument, the Bloemenmarkt (tulip market), the tulip museum and a canal cruise. A short city-hopper flight took us from Amsterdam to Cardiff, the capital of Wales. There we met up with my older brother Dale and his wife, then traveled to Llangattock, near Abergavenny, where we boarded our rented narrow boat. Our boat, the Condor, is 52 feet long and 8.5 feet wide. Somewhat like a floating RV, it is equiped with two bedrooms with private ensuites, a complete galley and a lounge area (for a complete description, visit beaconparkboats.com.) These somewhat luxurious boats are self-piloting, that is, we were the crew. After a short tutorial, we were on our own deiseling up the Mon and Brec canal. I should mention that these things steer like the Titanic; throw the tiller hard over, count to ten slowly and you will see the bow start to move sideways. Dispite this, we managed to navagate the canal without mishap. This is partly due to the fact that the normal cruising speed is about 4 kilometres per hour. It took us a week to travel up to Brecon (about 20 km away) and back to the boatyard, but you don t rent one of these things if you are in a hurry. The main impediment to travel is not the slow speed of the boat, or the other boat traffic or even the many locks that have to be negotiated through, but the signs along the way announcing points of interest (viewpoints, old villages, castle ruins, lime kilns ) or local pubs. It is easy to pull over to the side, tie up the boat and investigate the local area. We can testify that the pubs all had excellent food and ale. The Mon and Brec canal passes through the Brecon Beacons National Park and so the views are very picturesque and natural. In a couple of places, the canal passes over rivers on aquaducts. There is also a tunnel which takes about 15 minutes to traverse. The locks on the canal are operated by hand, that is, our hands. To that end the boat is equiped with two lock keys, which are cranks used to operate the paddles which regulate the water flow in and out of the lock. The heavy lock gates are moved with the aid of counter-balanced beams and brute force. Volunteers at some of the locks made the job easier, especially where the lock had more than one flight. At the north terminus of the canal lies the town of Brecon with a comodius basin where the long boats can be turned around, or tied up if you want to do some shopping or just watch the swans glide by your windows. I should mention that there are many other winding holes along the canal where boats can be turned around if you don t want to go to the end. The restaurant built into the ruins of Brecon castle offers a dining experience that is a bit more elegant than the typical pub. After returning to the boatyard at LLangattock, we traveled by train north to Chester. Chester is a medieval walled city that also boasts the remains of a Roman amphitheater. We were able to circumnavigate the old part of the city by walking on top of the ancient city wall. From there we traveled by train west to the port of Porthmagog. Let me put a word in here for the British railway system. While not as modern or efficient as the rail system in Germany, Switzerland or France, it offers a service which is much better than we are used to in western Canada. There are trains going each way several times a day. No reservations are necessary and you can buy tickets from the conductor if you don t have time to visit the ticket vendor in the station. There are luggage racks in the train cars to accommodate your suitcases. Two features of this port town are worthy of mentioning. The nearby resort village of Portmarion was the site where the 60 s TV show The Prisoner was filmed and many locations were familiar to us from that show (which is available on Netflix, by the way.) We were able to take a four hour excursion on an authentic narrow-gauge steam train from Porthmagog to Ffestiniog, which is high on a mountain to the east. There is a slate mine there which has been in operation for centuries. Slate is used to produce roofing tiles which last a very long time. Leaving Porthmagog, we traveled by train to Swansea where we stayed for a few days. The Swansea museum has an interesting exhibit of machines involved with the coal industry and other industrial pursuits. The nearby Dylan Thomas museum was also interesting. Swansea shares an international airport with Cardiff and so it was easy (train/bus) to catch a short flight back to Amsterdam. This time, we took the number 197 express bus to the Museumplein (museum square) stop, which was close to our hotel. This location was in easy walking distance to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. (Traveler s tip: buy your ticket for the Van Gogh museum at the ticket booth by the I Amsterdam sign and avoid the long lines at this very popular attraction.) Along with an extensive collection of art by Vincent Van Gogh, there were a few items provided by the Van Gogh family. For example, you can compare Vincent s pictures involving a figured vase or a statue of a horse to the physical objects. Spoiler alert: what he saw is not exactly what your eyes will see. As you may have guessed, this trip was not part of an organized tour. We booked the airfare and the hotels before we left but local travel and attractions was done on the spot without difficulty. Wales uses the British pound and Europe uses the euro, so there were only two currencies to deal with. My Canadian debit and credit cards worked everywhere. ARE YOU CELEBRATING A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY OR ANNIVERSARY? Let us know and we can recognize it at the next ARNS function! Contact Helen Peters at or ARNS NOTES FALL 2016
