1 ARNS NOTES ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED NAIT STAFF nait.ca/arns SPRING 2017 ARNS PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello ARNS Members, Happy Spring! It is time to start planning gardens and starting seeds. There were 40 retirees honored at the 34th Annual Long Service and Staff Recognition Awards Ceremony in January. ARNS welcomes the new retirees. We hope that you will keep in touch by checking us out online at nait.ca/arns and by participating in our social events and our Annual General Meeting (AGM). Our sincere condolences, sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost their loved ones during the past months. May their memories be forever. ARNS is pleased to welcome Dan Papirnik and Sam Yurkiw to our executive committee. Dan and Sam are both members-at-large. Your executive has planned the upcoming Spring Fling. It will begin in the afternoon on June 7, 2017 with tours and demonstrations in the new Centre for Applied (CAT), followed by dinner and a guest speaker. Please check out the last page in the newsletter for more details. The members who attended our ARNS 2016 AGM agreed by motion to have our 2017 AGM in October. The date for the AGM is October 4, 2017 at 12:00 PM at the NAIT Fresh Express (next to Ernest s). The AGM will begin with a luncheon followed by the meeting. This event will be at no charge to ARNS members but please RSVP by September 25, Please be aware that there is a Notice of Motion that will be brought forward at the 2017 AGM. The Executive Committee has suggested changing 10.2 in the ARNS Constitution and By-Laws to 20 members shall constitute a quorum. We would like to encourage all our members to join us at our functions. We have a good time and the camaraderie is great. We look forward to seeing you soon. 3 TRAVELOGUE AND IMPRESSIONS OF NEW ZEALAND Submitted by Heather and Lynn Clark Air Tahiti Nui has an unbeatable price from LAX to Auckland that includes three-day layovers and accommodations in Tahiti which nicely breaks up the 16 hour flight out of LAX. We arrived in Auckland which is the ultimate cosmopolitan city of over a million people with a beautiful harbour. The space tower provides a wonderful panoramic view. New Zealand has probably the most diverse landscape of any of the more than 70 countries we have visited. In an area smaller than Alberta, there are lush rain forests, commercial pine forests, aquaculture, fisheries, snow capped mountains, beautiful black lava and coral sand beaches, arid plains, cascading mountain streams, glacial lakes, extinct volcanoes, hot water (geyser) beaches, sulphurous mud pots, pastoral sheep and cattle stations, orchards, market gardens, vineyards and the list goes on oops, can t forget the sandflies. Seemingly small, one should allow a minimum of two months to fully explore and appreciate all Kiwi land has to offer. Although we had eight weeks, a regret was the lack of time to hike as much as we had hoped and spend more time in certain locations. The terrain, coupled with narrow, curving roads restrict your functional speed on average to 70 km per hour. Before you go, decide upon your mode of travel. One option is car rental coupled with motels, B&B s, chalets in campgrounds, etc. A second option is via organised tours via bus, trains, boats, and planes. We chose to rent a high topper camper van and stay in the myriad of campgrounds. Don t be intimidated by driving on the left; ensure you have a GPS and kiwi drivers are the most courteous drivers we have encountered anywhere. Campgrounds are incredible; all have wonderful laundry facilities, tile and marble bathrooms, showers, kitchens with stainless steel counter tops, wash-up facilities, BBQs, fridges, freezers, stoves, toasters, microwaves, kettles, dishes and cooking pots. Large communal dining areas make for establishing friendships with travellers from almost every country on a daily basis and sharing of travel tips. For brevity, I won t go into detail regarding travel tips/suggestions so if you want additional information contact us at mlcconsulting@gmail.com. nait.ca/arns arns@nait.ca
4 Kauri wood is the strongest lightest wood and the reason Kiwis won so many sailing world sailing championships using yachts constructed of Kauri. Kauri resin dripped off trees and became fossilized into gum and resin and is now used for jewellery and exotic carvings. We travelled from the extreme tip of the north island (Cape Reigna) where the Tasman Sea meets with the Pacific Ocean to the bottom end of the south island near Milford Sound. The number one highlight for us was a bus and boat tour from Te Anau to Milford Sound. The Fiordlands of Milford are as spectacular as the fjords of Norway. Te Papa, the national museum in Wellington is an incredible exhibit; especially the memorial to the Gallipoli campaign in WW1. Kiwis suffered the most casualties of any nation in WW1 expressed as a percentage of the population. Casualties (killed, maimed and shell shocked veterans) left NZ with few marriageable men in the 1920s. The second highlight was the Kauri museum at Matehoke that chronicled the logging of Kauri forests by Europeans beginning in the 1840s. Kauri are the second largest trees in the world and valued for their exotic woods, varnish, and fossilized resin. The Gallipolli museum (check it out online) is very moving and consists of lifelike statues of battlefield scenes (16 to 20 feet tall) and their individual stories. Image (right) depicts Dr. Percival Fenwick, a medic grieving over a fallen comrade, and nurse Lottie Le Callais receiving word of her brother s death. ARNS NOTES SPRING 2017
5 We attended a hangi, the Maori counterpart of a Hawaiian luau, to sample the food and Maori culture. Maoris have a proud history dating back to their inclusion in the NZ government in the late 19th century. Lindauer gallery portraits (check it out on-line) of Maoris (below) in Auckland were amazing. To watch the haka war dance performed by the world champion All Black Rugby team is an intimidating experience. Warrior above had to relinquish his axe before the game could start. The Broken Islands area on the north island is picturesque and has a rich history of British colonialism and Maori history with the signing of the Waitangi Treaty in the mid 1850s. Mt. Cook National Park in the Southern Alps contains a monument to Sir Edmund Hillary who trained here in advance of his Mt. Everest climb. Not to be missed in a culinary sense are the abundant vineyards that abound on both islands and New Zealand is renowned for its white wines, Pinot Noir and craft beers. Fresh fish markets and meat shops provide a smorgasbord of cooking options. The main street that runs through every small town had several bake shops whose aromas entice you to check out the Danish pastries, strudels, turnovers, fruit pies, cakes, meat pies. There is a farmers market in every village one day a week to provide locally produced fruit, vegetables, cheeses, venison, lamb, meat pies and the like. Takeaway shops offer a blend of fish, meat pies, wonderful curries plus they allow BYOB wines with no charge for corkage very civilised. Back in Camrose, we are in an exercise program to offset our overindulgences. The south island from Christchurch south to Invercargill is a vast plain that makes for easy driving and a rural pastoral setting. Lots of hiking, fishing, farm stays and biking for outdoor enthusiasts while Queenstown is the center of testosterone-fuelled activities, skydiving, zip lines, hang-gliding, jet boats, car racing, bungee jumping, etc. Kiwis are world leaders in biosecurity to protect their watersheds, native fisheries and forest. We had to walk through a chemical footbath upon entering and leaving a Kauri forest. Livestock are fenced off from all surface water and sports fisherman are required to wash all equipment. In closing, if we did not live in Canada, New Zealand would be the country we would choose to live. nait.ca/arns arns@nait.ca
6 nait.ca/naititforward thank you THANK YOU! Thanks to retired and current faculty and staff donors, over $91,000 was raised to support NAIT students. Over $35,000 went to the NAIT Fund which was used to help mental health initiatives (60%); general scholarships and bursaries (20%) and to help finish equipping the Centre for Applied (20%) Over $20,000 went to Emergency Bursaries, helping students directly at the time they are most in need. So far this year, over 20 students have applied for these bursaries, with more than 60% of them receiving the emergency funding. 100% of all gifts go where they are designated, no administrative fees are deducted Interested in volunteering for the 2017 campaign? We will need help at events, advice on how to better connect with retired staff and more! Opportunities in the planning phase as well as during the active campaign in October.
