LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB 1 MARCH 2018 Greetings! Just got home, its Friday Night & I picked up Pizza for our traditional Friday Night Pizza dinner. (this time from Papa Murphy s) I talked to Burt Young about the 50 s Cruise as I had to work last Saturday. There were 60 cars not including the club members cars. I was there at 6:00am in the morning along with quite a few of our club members. There was a good showing for set up which helped for a smoother op- eration than last year. There was a light rain while I was there but it stopped when I left. It didn t rain during the show from what I was told. Just tried to find out if any club members went to the MERTS open house and Ross said there were about 6 club members with there cars there. Unfortunately, Ann & I couldn t break loose from the Store. Steve Jordan and a few members were called in for the movie shoot at various lo- cations in Astoria over the past few weeks including this last Thursday. Unfortunately, some of us could not make it because of short notice the night before. I hope some showed up. (I m still not sure what the movie is about.) Well, I just heard the buzzer go off for the Pizza. Time to eat! Next meeting is Thursday May 17th at 7:00pm at Steve Jordan s shop. We will announce the May Social within this Backfire, and at the club meeting. Fred Mestrich President May 19th Social Where: Port Light Café On Camp Rilea When: Saturday, May 19, 2018 Time: 5:30 p.m.. What: Prime Rib Special $18.95 Includes; salad bar, twice baked potato, Hot vegetable & dinner roll. Please R.S.V.P. to Jul Grandbois (503) By May 17th

LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB 2 Lower Columbia Classic minutes minutes of regular meeting April 19, 2018 Steve Jordan's shop, Helligso lane, Astoria, Oregon The regular meeting of the Lower Columbia Classic Car Club was held April 19, 2018 at 7pm at Steve Jordan's shop. President Fred Mestrich called the meeting to order. It was moved and seconded to accept the minutes as printed in the BACKFIRE. The motion carried. The treasurer Burt Young was not in attendance. The Sunshine Committee reported that Burt Young was in the hospital, and Cliff Ellenwood hurt his back. Please keep them both in your thoughts. We had a guest, Dan Renker. The 50's cruise in going well. We have 26 pre registers. The trophy list has been finalized and has been sent to the company making them. We will need help setting up Saturday morning at 6:00am, and tearing down after the show. We must pack out ALL of our garbage. The website is up and working. Go on and take a look! If your car is not on there, please send a picture. The newsletter articles will now be due on the 1 st of the month, so we can get the letter out in a timely manner. Warrenton High School Auto Club is going well. Still hoping to have the building completed by June. Jul is planning a social activity for May. Keep your ears open for details. A printed copy of the bylaws will be available soon. On Tuesday April 17 th, 4 of our members cars were used in the filming of the movie. Look for Jim Wood, Ross Getchell, Steve Jordan, and Marv Stunkard's cars in the movie, The Mortuary Collection. Meeting adjourned at 7:37pm. Ann Mestrich won the attendance drawing. Secretary Margot Gittins.

LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB 3 Ramblin `Round With Steve It s a brand new month, the tents are down, the cars have left, the field s been cleaned up - so I guess the show s over, the 50 s show that is. For those of you who didn t participate, it was a small but successful show and the weather was perfect. Even with the overcast, I heard a few folks commenting about the sunburn. About 60 hardy & loyal owners brought out their beauties for everyone to view, a small show but still a fun show. A huge THANK-YOU, to all members who pitched in, worked hard and made it a big success. Ford Coupe was dressed up as a cruiser for the filming of a movie scene in downtown Astoria, Thursday morning. One of the final scenes, I m told, to be shot in Astoria. The film? - - Mortuary Collections is set to be released sometime this fall. Now that it is the merry month of May, most of us are looking for events to attend this month and there just isn t that much out there. Of course there s always far runs to fun shows like Lost in the 50 s in Sandpoint, ID. but most of us would like something a bit closer to home. May 12th is the date for the Twin Ranch Swap Meet & Car Show in Tillamook, then on May 19th Tillamook holds its Torch Run and then there is Portland s Jim Dandy s Cruise in on the same day. June gets a lot better, starting right off with the Rods n Reels Car Show in Skamokawa on the 2nd of June. It s been said that this is the last one, but I ve heard rumors that someone has stepped up and is talking about taking the show over. Hope it works out to be true! Our very own film star; Jim roadkill Scarborough was caught here, on film, playing cops & robbers. Guess he thought he d like to be on the other side this time. Jim s `47 As per the notice posted elsewhere in this publication, beginning on June 1st, the deadline for receiving articles and other contributions for the Backfire will be the first of each month. This is being done in order to make sure the newsletter is received prior to meeting date. The newsletter is still mailed in printed form to members who don t have electronic access.

LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB 4 By Jim Wood I seem to be in some kind of a rut. I found myself out in Svensen on Simonsen rd. again. This time I was headed out to Jim and Valerie Purdy's place to check out their custom home made piece of automotive ingenuity. Dune buggy doesn't really de- Yes, that s Dennis Gage at the End of the World show their place Jim spies what looks like a fiberglass dune buggy body in the woods. Further inspection proved it to be just that, a fiberglass body. No wheels, no motor, no frame, just the body. He found the owner who claimed he had been using it for a deer scribe what this thing is. Roadster, dragster or may- blind. So for fifty dollars Jim and Valerie had a deer be rocketship also describes it. Jim says it is not going blind in their garage! Jim ended up buying a '70 to be seeing any sand. At one point in time Jim and VW bug for parts. He needed some suspension and Valerie used to run a dune buggy and then later a sand rail with friends down at the coastal dunes. Eventually they left that sport. Jim needed something to do. One day just down the road from steering pieces to turn this thing into some kind of a dune buggy? I still don't know what to call it because there is nothing else like it. Except for the afore mentioned VW parts, Jim built and fabricated

LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB 5 every square inch of this car. I've only known Jim casually for a couple of years. I had no idea he had all these cool tools for fab work and really knows how to use them. I said something about the quality of the welding and then he informs me he taught welding for years. Ok, now I get it. No wonder all the fab work on this car is awesome. That's just the structure part, he also reshaped the body with fiberglass and paint. He modified the body to look similar to a Meyers-Manx. He modified the nose with two cafeteria trays. He also found a roof off of a Meyers-Manx on the internet and attached it. Now all he needed was some power. Vee Wee flat six? No, everyone has that. I know! How about a Chevy 2.8 litre V-6! With a double pump Holley on top of B+M blower. Ok, this just went from cool to ridiculously cool. 31x16.5 Mickey Thompson rubber on the rear, dragster sized fronts. Drag shoot and wheelie bars. This thing looks like it is about to make a pass at the strip. This thing is so cool that whenever they take it for a spin it draws a crowd. Even if you don't care for the dune buggy style this thing attracts all gear heads. You just don't see dune buggies with a blower sticking up in the back. Jim says he had Big Daddy Ed Roth in mind with the concept of a huge engine in a small car. You guys remember the 'Rat Fink' right? The only thing missing is the 8 ft. long gear shifter sticking out of the window. Jim says he didn't build this vehicle to run on the sand, just for Sunday drives and car shows. He told me he has only driven this car a couple hundred miles. He really enjoyed the building of the car and says "that was probably the best part". I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record when I say how amazed I am at the talent and workmanship of some of the people in this club. Jim and Valerie have been club members for a long time now and always help out when they can. Next month I gotta find someone with more normal skills, like me. If you think that might be you, give me a call and I will come see "what are you working on".
