We ge o see friends from revious years and we ge o mee ew people ha are filled wih ha amazing enhusiasm ha will ake his year he bes ever. Those alens, along wih our skills and enhusiasm, are ha will make his summer he wilderness experience ha lass a ifeime for our paricipans. A few weeks ago, I had he anasic opporuniy o ravel o Cusco, Peru wih a medical umaniarian expediion. We pen en days raveling o remoe illages in he mounains of Peru o give medical nd denal care o people who, in any cases, do o have access o ha care. I as ruly a lifehanging experience. I was able o e par of a group ha served his umble and graeful people. I was given hugs from umerous people who waned o hank me for being here o elp. I was again able o learn he mporance of serving ohers. While here, we were able o climb he mounain Waynapicchu, he famous mounain you see in many picures of Machu Picchu. We climbed up hundreds of seps ha had been painsakingly carved ino he mounain side. Talk abou amazing rail building skills. As we reached he op, he view was incredible. We were looking back down a Machu Picchu, he mounains surrounding i and down ino he Sacred Valley. Working here has augh me a grea deal, bu my mos imporan learning experience was wih my firs crew as a Ranger. We had hiked up Bonio Canyon from Old Abreu and were approaching our desinaion for he nigh, Lookou Meadow. Before reaching camp, a hailsorm came over he ridge. We scurried o he ouskirs of he meadow and ook cover in he rees. I remember no knowing exacly wha o do, bu we ook ou he dining fly and se up a makeshif sheler. Afer he rain slowed, we hiked he res of he way o camp, se up our ens and prepared dinner afer which he rain sared again. I had waned o ake my crew o wach he sunse from Craer Peak, bu we rereaed o our ens. As I was wriing a journal enry abou our day on he rail, he weaher began o clear. I dropped my pen, checked he clouds and quickly gahered everyone o begin hiking. As we neared he op of Craer Peak, he sun was sinking ino he mounain and filled he horizon. I was gorgeous. There was a sense of calm and renewal ha lef us silen. Even as srangers, we developed a common rus and connecion ha nigh. I had been able o share one of my favorie places wih hem jus as i had been shared wih me many years before. On he way back, everyone alked abou he nigh s amazemen. Despie being exhaused, we sa and alked in he meadow while waching he sar-filled sky. Before going o bed ha nigh, I wen back o finish he journal passage. I wroe abou he fulfillmen of sharing ha momen wih my firs crew, and seeing he look in heir eyes as he colors changed. I wroe abou how siing in he meadow wih hose eigh Scous and wo advisors made me feel compleely a home. I wroe abou being confiden in knowing ha I had done my job well. As we move ino he 76h year a Philmon Scou Ranch, we have much o be excied for. Our newes backcounry camp a Mecalf Saion will now be open! The rails have arrived, ies are on he way and consrucion coninues on he faciliies ha will re-creae he life and imes of he Cimarron and Norhwesern Railway. Bu, before you can even ge o Mecalf, you have o pass hrough he Chase Ranch, which is also now a par of he program offerings a Philmon in Beween he wo, he Norh Ponil will be very busy wih many new and exciing aciviies for housands o enjoy! Wha an exciing summer awais as we celebrae he 1 millionh Scou a Philmon Scou Ranch. One million! This is an incredible milesone and as we reflec back on 1 million lifechanging wilderness experiences, I know Waie Phillips would be proud of wha Philmon Scou Ranch and he Training Cener has become. When you look a he hisory of Philmon, you see an evoluion of program ha consanly seeks o push furher and do hings beer. I reminds me of wha Wal Disney once said, We don look backwards for very long... we keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new hings because we re curious and curiosiy keeps leading us down new pahs. This curiosiy is a criical elemen in he success of Philmon programs and I hope each of us can find ways o be more curious his Our curiosiy will ensure ha we coninue o mee he needs of he nex 1 million Scous who will come o Philmon.
