4 Forward Woodens River Waershed Environmenal Organizaion WRWEO This voluneer organizarion is cqmprised ofsome fify ciizens who are commied o proecing and improving he Woodens River Waershed. The group began meeing in he summer of 1995, and became incorporaed in February The Woodens River waershed sreches from jus norh of Exi 4 on Highway #103, in he communiies of Hubley/Five Island, o Seabrigh and Glen Margare where he Woodens River empies ino S. Margare's Bay. Concerned abou a variey of issues in he Waershed, he organizaion is aiming o prepare and implemen a communiy-based waershed managemen plan ha will mee he needs and aspiraions of he residens, landowners, and oher users of he waershed. This plan will enable hese groups o have a say in governmen planning for he area. For more informaion abou he WRWEO or his bookle call: Richmond Cambell a (902) or wrie o: The WRWEO is working o raise communiy awareness of environmenal issues in he waershed, and o encourage feedback from he communiy on a variey of issues. This is being accomplished by holding public meeings and by producing displays and oher informaion maerials. The Woodens River Waershed Environmenal Organizaion was pleased o sponsor and supervise he Woodens River Environmenal Acion Team who spen much of heir summer collecing he informaion conained in his brochure. Their hard work has resuled in his excellen publicaion which will help people o fully appreciae he Woodens River waershed TheWoodens River Waershed is an imporan par ofseveral ofhe communiies in he S. Margare's Bay area. Few people know he exen of i's boundaries and he role i plays in he area. The Waershed exends from he communiies ofhubley/five Island Lake a he norhern end o he communiies ofseabrigh and Glen Margare where i empies ino S Margare's Bay. The Woodens River Waershed was firs used by he Mi'kmaq. European selers were araced o he lakes and rivers which were well socked wih fish, and engaged in aciviies such as huning and angling. I suppored he ship building indusry in Sf. Margare's Bay and provided a source of fuel. I was no long before ourism and rade in he Waershed began. Today he Waershed is used for recreaion and residenial developmen. Foresry coninues in he souhern area. Fishing and hiking Inroducion remain popular aciviies for residens and visirors. The Waershed is home o a wide variey of Nova Scoian wildlife and indigenous plans. I is also an area ofhisrorical ineres as wo former roads cross i's boundaries. These roads form he foundaion for a nework of rails in he area. This bookle is he oucome ofa summer projec carried ou by he Woodens River Environmenal Acion Team. WREAT was fonned by four sudens who were concerned. abou he condiion ofhe area. Working under he sponsorship and supervision of he Woodens River Waershed Environmenal Organizaion, heir goal was o map and collec informaion abou he Waershed and ro promoe a sense ofresponsibiliy for he preservaion ofhe Waershed area. The human impac he Waershed has susained over he years is no irreversible, bu ifi coninues, he warershed and surrounding areas will suffer. The informaion conained wihin is mean o creae awareness ofhe Waershed. Hopefully his Bookle will encourage all users of he Waershed o preserve and improve he naural beauy ofhe area. cl W~od~ns i~i~ei Waershed. Environmenal Ofganiza19n ' " 41 Oak Ridge,. 6 Environmenal Concerns The Woodens River Waershed has been used by people for cenuries. Over he years some users have misreaed and misused he area. This has caused he envirorunenal qualiy of he area o be degraded. There are serious envirorunen problems in he waershed such as dumping, erosion and PCB conaminaion. When he informaion for his bookle was colleced in 1996, he auhors ook a survey of he junk piles in he waershed. Over fory piles were found. The majoriy of hese were car wrecks ha had been driven ino he area and lef behind. Also discovered were fridges, furniure and building maerials including pain, shingles and concree. Some of he cars found daed back o 1959 bu mos are recen. This abuse of he area sill akes place and ruins he aesheic qualiy of he rails. More imporanly, hese dump sies are damaging o he local ecosysem. Any leaking fluids can pass ino he waer and spread hrough he waershed. The refrigeraors are also aconcern because hey hold CFCs (chloroflourocarbons) ha damage he orone. Erosion can be a problem as well. I is a process which occurs naurally hroughou he waershed. Misuse of he area can lead o an accearaion of his process. The mos obvious evidence can be found in he areas ha have been logged or clear cu Clearcuing removes all of he rees in a given area leaving only dry sumps and branches ha can be a fire hazard in dry weaher. Heavy machiney desroys he op organic layer ofsoil ha is vial o he regeneraion ofa fores. Once he second layer of mineral soil is exposed i washes down hills ino he sreams. Wihou rees forming a buffer rone along a river, soil can wash direcly ino he waer and suffocae fish spawning habia. Clearcuing is he mos economical way o harves a fores bu he mos cosly o he environmen There are alernaive mehods ofharvesing ha are being promoed by he Nova Scoia Deparmen ofnaural Resources. Any human aciviy such as hiking, biking, or camping may impac an area, bu clearly irresponsible use of moorized vehicles causes rapid erosional damage o delicae areas. The majoriy' of ATV users are responsible when operaing heir vehicles bu some are no and are possibly causing damage unknowingly. Some reckless users have brough a bad name o he spor Areas such as bogs, barrens, and sream banks are easily damaged and difficul o resore. The wors damage is caused in spring afrer he heavy rains. Alernae roues ha avoid hese ddicae areas would hdp solve his problem and creae less damage. A major envirorunenal concern har has drawn aenion o he waershed is PCB conaminaion. The problem began a a former meal salvage yard in he area. The PCBs coming mosly from he salvaging of COppe from power line ransformers enered he sysem of lakes and sreams hough Five Island Lake and have pollued he sedimens in several lakes in he waershed. Aliaison commiee was formed wih local residens, represenaives of he NS D~parmen of Transporaion.and Public Works and he NS Deparmen of he Envirorunen o work wih he goverrunen owards he successful cleanup of he area. The dumpsie was parially excavaed and he conaminaed soil was sored in special conainers. Several advisories were issued because ofconcerns for human healh and he environmen. A presen (1996), he Deparmen of Healh is advising people no o swim or boa in he Norh Bay secion offive Island Lake o avoid sirring up conaminaed sedimen ha could move downsream. Anoher advisoy is agains earing he fish caugh in paricular lakes in he waershed (see recreaion). A sudy was conduced of he possible effecs on wildlife in he area. Mink and loons were sudied and he conclusion was ha boh could be a serious risk. However, he conclusions are heoreical and only ime will ell he rue impac of he conaminaion. Some envirorunenal problems in he waershed are no irreversible and can be improved. Communiy responsibiliy and cooperaion is essenial. There are many hings ha ciizens can do o improve he condiion of he area. Anyone in he area should be careful no o leave any garbage behind. Eveyone is responsible for packing heir own bdongings ou when hey leave he waershed. I would no hur o carry some exra garbage ou as well if i is found. Human beings can be he envirorunens wors enemy or bes friend.
7 Recreaion Trails Wih over 28 km ofrails and 19 lakes here is awide range ofreceaio'nal uses ofhe waershed: The larger dir roads known as fire roads are used exensively by mounain bikers, ATV users and 4x4 ruckers. These roads are wider and less rocky han oher raiis in he waershed and are bes suied o hese ypes.of vehicles. The smaller rails are used more by hikers bu sui he avid ATV or bike ravelers as well. In he winer monhs some raiis are used for crosscounry skiing, skiddooing, and dog sledding. These aciviies make he waershed a yearround recreaional area. One of he main advanages of hiking he waershed is ha i enables he hiker o gain a beer appreciaion for he area. Awide range of wildlife can be seen on he raiis and lakes as visiors enjoy he naural environmen. Hikers can access all rails including he smaller side rails. Anglers who have visied he area in he pas have found excellen fishing. Many have special spos ha hey revisi year afer" year. Unforunaely some areas ofhe Woodens River...\ ~.~7'~~:- i:~w'::'~~ i~ i \,. ~ \).:..,1! 8 \\ '.. \... Waershed have be 7 0me conaminaed by PCBs. The Deparmen of Healh has advised ha he public no ea fish caugh in: Sheldrake Lake, Birch Hill Lake, Holland Marsh Lake, Lizard Lake, Frederick Lake, FiVe Island Lake Run, Five Island Lake, Eas Duck Pond, Hubley Big Lake, and Long Lake. Though he fish may be conaminaed, he waershed's m3!1y lakes are safe for aciviies such as kayaking or canoeing and are beaijiful spos o visi. There is somehing in he waershed for everyone o enjoy. I is agrea place for oudoor enhusiass ofany age a any ime ofhe year. Noe: By law JPU mus bring a compass,.map, knife and maches ino he woods wih )flu when paricipaing in an ouwor aciviy. Always remember safey..' "''--:'r' :~~., The rail invenory was he main purpose of he 1996 summer projec by WRFAT. The following pages conain descripions of he raiis in he waershed which have been compiled wih as much accuracy as possible. Every year here are sories ofpeople geing los in he woods. Mos people ge los because ofa lack of preparaion and knowledge of he area. We srongly advise ha all people who ener he waershed carry a daypack and a opographical map ofhe area. The maps in his bookle are inended as a guide andare mean o be accompanied by a more deailed map. The map of Halifax 11 D/12 in he Naional Topographic Sysem is a a scale of 1:50000 and shows he enire waershed. I is a suiable map ofhe area which can be purchased a mos oudoor recreaion supply sores. I is a good idea o make up an iinerary deailing your roue and leave i wih a responsible person along wih he ime you expec o reurn. Once you have decided on a roue sick o i! Exploring ha lile side rail could be he misake ha ges you los. The imes ha are lised in he rail descripions are mean for hikers raveling a a fair pace so always leave ample ime o complee your rip.. The raiis are no mainained by any specific group bu mos users will remove deadfalls and clear drainage diches. Due o p~r drainage in several areas, users should be prepared o ge abi we. Making raiis ha skir he waer holes is a pracice ha is undesirable because hey enlarge he exising waer holes. These side rails do no las long because he ground becomes compressed and hen Hoods. Anoher area ofconcern ha users should be aware of is he errain. Erosion has carried away much of he gravel on he hills exposing loose rocks ha can be hazardous. Some raiis also have rocks proruding from he ground. Hikers are advised o wear proper foowear and boos ha provide good ankle suppor. 9 Mos of he bridges are in f.ur condiion and allow users o cross wih ease. The bridge ha crosses he run beween Brines Lile Lake and Alber Bridge Lake (known as Alber Bridge) is in need ofsome repair. The sringers are in good condiion and can be crossed wih cauion, bu he decking is unsafe due o ro. In he rail descripions under he uses caegory biking should be inerpreed as mounain biking. None of he rails in he waershed are suiable for sree bikes. Trail markers have been placed a even inervals on he rails for he benefi ofall users. They are made of corrugaed plasic, similiar o ha used in real esae signs.. The.markers are 6" square and have been placed beween 7'and 9' above he ground. They are visible from boh direcions. Some of he rails are very obvious and in hese cases marking has been limied o widely spaced inervals and where he rail forks. Where he rails are no so obvious he markers have been placed wihin line of sigh. In some areas i was no possible o use hese markers so survey ape ofhe same colour has been used. In he rail descripions he marker has been lised under: Colour. These rails have been in exisence for some ime. Wih proper use hey will coninue o provide pleasure for a long ime o come.
