1 VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 9 JUNE JULY 2015 NORVA NEWS President s Message There are currently about 6,000 members of WBCCI s Region 3, participating in local Airstream clubs all along the east coast of the U.S., from Virginia to Florida. During May, 245 Airstreamers arrived in 132 trailers and motor homes to attend the annual Region 3 Rally, this year in Charleston, S.C. Notably, 14 members of NORVA were among them, and they included one NORVA couple publicly recognized by Region 3's President Matt Hackney for their many years of service to the Region 3 leadership. Matt expressed thanks for the work of Cecil Hoosier, who not only serves NORVA as our storekeeper, but has also been serving as the official photographer for Region 3. And Cecil s wife Della, who is NORVA s terrific newsletter editor, was lauded for her great work as the Region 3 recording secretary. Cecil and Della announced to the rally attendees that they would soon be stepping down from their Region assignments and both received heartfelt applause for jobs exceptionally well done! Their selfless volunteer service, along with their dedication to WBCCI and Airstreaming, is absolutely inspirational. Luckily for us, they will continue to be treasured NORVA members and our good friends for many years to come! I found the information shared at the Region 3 rally was interesting and timely. As 2015 NORVA unit president, it is my job to represent our club and vote on issues at the upcoming international meeting of WBCCI delegates. This will happen at the end of the month during the big WBCCI rally in Farmington, N.M. So far, owners of 375 Airstream trailers and motor homes have signed up for the International rally. More are expected. I am pleased that several NORVA unit members will be making the long trip out west to attend. Included on the International Rally agenda will be voting by the delegates to elect new WBCCI officers, and to consider a new secondary name for the club. The official name will remain unchanged: (the Wally Byam Caravan Club International ), but the proposed secondary name is Airstream Club International. A parliamentary procedural change is also being put up for a vote. It is proposed that delegates follow the lead of the International Board of Trustees and allow time-consuming roll call votes to be dispensed with if unanimous consent for an issue is requested and approved without objection. This would be a time saver, because conducting roll call votes on every issue takes a very long time. If you are a regular member of the NORVA Unit, please let me know your thoughts, yea or nay, on these proposed changes so I might cast our votes accordingly at the delegates meeting. Simply me at Lbrodsky@cox.net. If you are an affiliate member of NORVA, you will be represented by the delegate from your primary WBCCI unit (contact your primary unit president to express your views on these issues). Right after the Region 3 rally ended, many of us enjoyed this year s NORVA Unit Caravan, Travels With Dick and Jane, Part III. As you can see elsewhere in this Inside this Issue newsletter, we had beautiful spring weather as our caravan toured South Carolina 3 Region 3 Rally and North Carolina, with a focus on Revolutionary War battlefields. Many thanks to 4 NORVA Caravan the Arnolds for leading a fun-filled, educational caravan. Enjoy your summer travels and stay safe! 7 New Members 8 Sugar Creek Caravan

3 VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 9 PAGE 3 The Region 3 Rally Ladson North Carolina This rally was held at Ladson North Carolina at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds. Matt Hackney and his group set up a wellorganized rally. There were seminars to attend and tours to take, and breakfast each morning. We had several people attend the seminars. One such seminar was the system to monitor tire pressure on the trailers and toe vehicles. Some folks attending were Bill Williamson, Edgar Simmons, Ralph Uttech, Della and Cecil Hoosier and Lew Brodsky. Others may have but this writer does not remember. The Sky Part of the group before the Library of Congress Med seminar followed breakfast and just about everyone attended. There were also leadership classes. Several planned tours for the asking or signing up were to be had. Edgar and Kathy Simmons along with Cecil and Della Hoosier took the Carriage ride through Charleston and the boat ride around the Harbor which was a bundled package. Along the way we saw the walking tour which included Lew Brodsky, Ed and Beth Jones. Tom and Fred Carmichael enjoyed golfing. Louis Uttech enjoyed all the entertainment and ice cream. Different units made breakfast each morning. Served on one morning was Oatmeal and ice cream. If you have never had this combination try it you will be surprised. They also had toppings to garnish. The other breakfasts were just as tasty, pancakes and sausage, also breakfast casserole with biscuits. On Thursday evening were the opening ceremonies. The flag bearers presented their flag when their unit was recognized. After all the announcements were completed ice cream was served. Lots of fellowship was enjoyed while savoring the ice cream. Friday and Saturday evening both had great entertainment after announcements. One young lady, Jocelyn Oldham, sang and had a system set up to where she could record herself and then sing along with the recording. For example she recorded the harmony and sang the melody. Saturday evening the entertainment was a band known as the Black Bottom Biscuits. The Region 3 business meeting was held on Friday morning. Matt Hackney went over things that was happening at International. He read two proposals that were going to International for the delegates vote. A nominating committee was elected and they were Jay Thompson, Don Allen and Alicia Rafter to select nominees for office the next two years This was a great rally, thanks to Matt Hackney and his crew.

4 PAGE 4 Traveling with Dick and Jane Part III NORVA NEWS Dick and Jane have led three NORVA caravans and each one was great in its own character. This caravan was no different. We left the Region 3 on Sunday morning after breakfast heading out on our journey. The group included Lew Brodsky and Paisley, Cecil and Della Hoosier, Ed and Beth Jones, John and Donna Pennington, Ralph and Louise Uttech, Bill Williamson and we were joined at the first stop by Jackson and Mary Ann McBroom. When trying to decide what tidbit to write about I ask Cecil what he thought. I mentioned the BMW plant and he said the thought the Freightliner plant was better. We also saw four sites that represented the Revolutionary war which were Cowpens, Kings mountain, South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, and Guilford Courthouse. There is not enough space to share everything so let me focus on a couple. At the BMW plant our tour guide was very personable and gave us ear phones and safety glasses. The BMW S come into the plant from the paint section on a convey belt. When they come into the plant the doors are taken off. Apparently the doors are complicated. Each car was ordered and paid for by an individual or a car dealer. Safety is very important in the plant. We had a path to walk which put us in single file. Our leader would take us to a spot and then explain what we were seeing. At one place we saw a robot that picked up the small glass that goes into the back of the X3 or X4 and put glue on it. Then the robot handed the glass to an associate to put in place on the car. One interesting thing is that the parts to the cars must be at the workstation. Associates make regular deliveries to these spots in time before the worker needs the part. If the venders do not deliver the parts on time, the venders are charged a high fine. We moved to the spot where the doors are put back on the car. Before we made it to that point we saw the cars lifted upon their side so a gas tank could be put on. Everything is done so it is ergonomically correct so the associate does not have to attached parts in and uncomfortable position. We walk down to the end of the line to see when the car is designated a BMW car. They have a sensor on hood that holds all the information for that car. After passing all quality control steps it is given an ornament that says this is a BMW. To do them they put the part in and smack it with a rubber hammer. It is like spanking a new born baby. BMW 007 Car BMW Car and Trailer At the Freightliner plant they build chaises for school busses, UPS trucks, RV s and commercial busses. We had plenty of time just to stand and watch things being put on the chaises. The line begins with two still beams. The workers begin by putting in cross supports and bolting them in place. As the frame moves down the line different associates add things in order. It is amazing how they get everything in place. We saw some of the biggest motors, wheels that are used for motor homes, buses and ups trucks. There are lots of air guns to tighten up bolts and nuts. They had this special machine that could tighten about eight lug nuts at one time. They have picnic tables set up so they can take lunch near their workplace. Arrangements are made for venders to come as specific times to sell lunch; Today it was BoJangels. A question was asked about turnover in personal. Older folks with families seem to stay and work. Young folks do not like to stay too long they do not like the hard work. The plant is very efficient, but they are working on ways to make things better. One thing they would like to get rid of the air guns and go to battery to get rid of noise. This is just a couple of the things we saw. As a member of WBCCI gives you many opportunities to see the country and enjoy sights you may not know about. Our unit has offered many great opportunities to visit historical sites, travel short distances and fellowship with one another. So grab your gear 1 hook up the Airstream and see the USA a little at a time. 1 Special Agent Gibbs
