1 VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 10 AUGUST 2015 NORVA NEWS President s Message What s in a name? Have you ever told an acquaintance that you are an active member of the NORVA Unit of the Wally Byam Caravan Club, International and, in response, gotten a blank stare? I have long felt the name of our club hides our identity because it omits a key component: Airstream. For a long time we have known that we need to come up with a better name. Well, I am pleased to report that this problem was recognized and fixed at the recent session of the WBCCI International Board of Trustees (IBT) during the big International rally in Farmington, N.M. (As a reminder, the IBT is comprised of the International Officers of WBCCI and the 12 Region presidents.) At their session in Farmington, the IBT administratively approved a motion instructing Lori Plummer, WBCCI s new corporate manager in Jackson First Place Best Looking Center, to file for two fictitious club names with the State of Ohio. In this usage, fictitious is a legal term. It simply means that the official legal name of our club remains as the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Inc. That s the non-profit corporation name that has long been registered in Ohio. Attempting to change it would be very complicated. Instead, the new filing will allow us to use two additional names. WBCCI, Inc., would thereafter also be known as The Airstream Club International, Inc., and The Airstream RV Owners Association, Inc. This is a giant step forward to cement our club s identity. Once approved and officially in place, the additional names can be used in conversation, on letterhead, and anyplace else WBCCI represents itself. Paisley and I enjoyed sojourning from Virginia to New Mexico with trailer in tow. Alas, Cathy s job kept her in Virginia, but the dog and I got reacquainted with the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the desert southwest. We were joined in New Mexico by NORVA members Ed and Beth Jones; Cecil and Della Hoosier; and Chuck and Joyce Gregory. For about two weeks, we traded the heat and humidity of the east for the hot, dry, Four Corners area of the southwestern states. And we who represented NORVA had good company more than 400 Airstream trailers and motorhomes from all over the U.S. and Canada were at the rally. I enjoyed attending the meetings and seminars, and voting as your delegate. In session, we amended the club s constitution to allow future delegates meetings to dispense with roll call votes if unanimous consent on a motion is requested and not opposed. This will be a great time-saver at future International rallies. We also approved the new slate of International officers for , headed by incoming President Jim Schwerdfeger of Caldwell, Tex., and his first lady, Raisin. There were also several changes to the club s by-laws, which you will no doubt read about in upcoming issues of The Blue Beret. And one more interesting note from the rally: I had the good fortune of dining one evening with Justin Humphreys, Airstream s VP for Marketing. He shared with me the fact that Airstream is looking at a Mercedes diesel chassis with the possibility of building a new, classic-style, aluminum, (Class A?) motor home on it (not unlike the Arnold s old unit). If produced, it would not be as big as the discontinued fiberglass Airstream Land Yachts (like the one owned by Ed and Kathy Simmons), more likely 28 to 30 feet. He said we might see something like this from Airstream in about five years. With Farmington behind us, we can start making plans for the 2016 International Rally, which will be held next summer in Lewisburg, West Virginia, much closer to home. Hey, NORVA members, it s not too early to be thinking about attending! Lew Brodsky

3 VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 10 PAGE 3 58 th International Rally, June 26 July 4, 2015 By Beth Jones It was a long drive, it was a hot stay, there were some good surprises and some not-so-good surprises (with the good far outweighing the bad), but four NORVA units joined 425 other Airstreams at Farmington, New Mexico for a jolly good time at the International Rally #58. Those attending included Lew Brodsky and Paisley, Cecil and Della Hoosier with granddaughter Alicia, Chuck and Joyce Gregory and Ed and Beth Jones. Let s dispense with the not-so-good happenings first. Bill Williamson got as far as Denver, CO, but then Bill decided he d stay with his son rather than continue on. We missed his company but he enjoyed being with family. After attending her 50 th class reunion, Beth flew from Dayton, OH to Chicago, to Denver and then missed her connecting flight to Farmington, but got on one to Durango, BUT her luggage didn t make it. Fortunately, WITHOUT help from the airlines, she located it the next day. So happy we rarely fly anymore! Next, on the way to Farmington, Cecil s truck broke down in Cortez. Luckily, Ed was available to drive up and tow their trailer back while Della and Alica followed in a rental car. The truck was repaired in just a few days. One more mishap and we ll get to the good stuff. The McGee Fairgrounds where we camped has horse races. Horses need frequent shoeing, and tires and stray nails are incompatible. Just ask Lew. He had not one but TWO flat tires on the grounds. Not a catastrophe but certainly an expensive annoyance. Now for the positives. Seeing old friends and meeting new folks is always the best part of International, and this rally did not disappoint. There were numerous day trips and local tours available many we d seen on the Southwest Adventure caravan but certainly worth a second look. Different this year was setting aside one full day for attendees to take advantage of sights without missing rally activities. We drove to Durango one day and also toured the local Bolack Electromechanical Museum which is a unique collection of antique electrical, radio and communication, industrial and agricultural artifacts. I had to quote that description because otherwise it is absolutely indescribable. There were copious seminars and speakers including Airstream appliance maintenance, engine monitoring apps, safe towing, Airstream Company presentations, webmaster help, crafts, Dutch-oven cooking, identity theft, caravan training, games, a ladies tea, a pet show (where our own Paisley handily won first place in the Best Looking category), an art show (where Chuck Gregory took ALL of the ribbons for his beautiful sterling silver and gemstone jewelry), a fashion show (where Alicia was a lovely model), and a flea market. The best speaker we heard was WWII Navajo code talker, Peter McDonald, who held a standing room only audience spellbound with his true story. Of the entire group of 430 code talkers, he is one of only 19 who are still alive. The Farmington community was welcoming and friendly and we found some great restaurants (recommended by the band, of course). The Purple Cow Café on the premises was popular for breakfast and lunch and ice cream after the evening programs. The evening entertainers a 50 s rock and roll group, a crooner guitarist, and a comic magician from Canada were excellent as was the ever-popular WBCCI band. The Airstreamers Have Talent night was fun (who knew that First Lady Sandy Perryman could bring the house down with her singing screech?) and the 4 th of July parade was a hoot! All in all it was a super International, but we re still sweeping sand out of the trailer.

8 PAGE 8 NORVA NEWS Bridgewater Lawn Party Rally July 14-18, 2015 By Elaine Ulrich The weather was beautiful, the food delicious and the fellowship fantastic. Edgar and Cathy Simmons planned a wonderful and active rally for our NORVA unit to enjoy. We started out with a watermelon happy hour and ate our way through the week with a special waffle breakfast at the Simmons home where we enjoyed watching Paul and Cynthia s fabulous pictures from their recent trip to Amsterdam and Morocco which were very interesting. Speaking of food, several times we enjoyed ice cream. Isn t that what Airstreamer s do? We experienced a tour of the Grand Caverns, which is America s oldest show cave near Grottoes, Virginia. We all got our exercise for the day by going up and down over 120 steps as well as a mile walk inside the cave. The next day we carpooled to Cass, West Virginia which was a beautiful 86 miles from our campsite. We then boarded the Cass Scenic Railroad train pulled by the Shay No. 6 steam engine built in We left Cass at 2,443 feet and went to Bald Knob with an elevation of 4,842 feet. We had lunch on the train and it was a memorable, very scenic trip. We were told that the spectacular view we saw on Bald Knob of the valley below is only experience approximately 10 days a year. The day before, it was so cloudy that one couldn t even see the picnic tables in the area much less the gorgeous view that we saw from Bald Knob. We enjoyed two parades during the week. The first parade was a parade of firetrucks and equipment from surrounding areas and the second parade was a parade of tractors. Most of the tractors were antiques but some were modern. Very interesting. The Lawn Party featured amusement rides, bingo, and lots of food to purchase, including homemade ice cream and country ham sandwiches. Several Airstreamers enjoyed visiting the Green Valley book store and filled their trailers with interesting books. There were many places to visit and some of the women went to Waynesboro and visited the P. Buckley Moss gallery and had a delicious lunch at an eclectically decorated restaurant next door. Some of us enjoyed a hot dog lunch at Jesse s, a diner established in 1940 and a legend in the area for their chili dogs, sandwiches and milkshakes. In addition to the Simmons and Pearces, others attending were Dick and Jane Arnold, Lew Brodsky, Cecil and Della Hoosier, Ed and Beth Jones, Lloyd and Elaine Ulrich and Bill Williamson.
