2 edition: 04 May 2013 pg 01 Architectural and Real Estate Wonders: The World's Biggest Ice Hotel THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE INDUSTRY Business meetings, conferences, exhibitions, trade shows and professional gatherings all form the increasing demand for meetings spaces globally. Many of such meetings are held annually with 50% of such meetings holding in Convention facilities. Convention centers are large buildings that typically offer sufficient floor area to accommodate several thousand attendees. Very large venues, suitable for major trade shows, are sometimes known as exhibition centres. Convention centers typically have at least one auditorium and may also contain concert halls, lecture halls, meeting rooms, and conference rooms. Some large resort area hotels include a convention center. The leading convention facilities boast of infrastructural and aesthetic features, monumental relevance or location. Often conceived to support economic growth and development, convention centers serve to provide a location for meetings, conventions, trade shows, public shows, the arts, and local interests. The benefits are measured in terms of out-of-town visitors, occupied room nights, incremental taxes, and sales. The success of a center is measured by its ability to generate economic benefit for the community. Some notable examples of International convention centers include:

THE MELBOURNE CONVENTION CENTRE The Melbourne Convention Centre is Australia s largest combined convention and exhibition facility. It has been described as the world s first 6Star Green Star convention centre. Providing a world-class facility and bringing an internationally enviable event space to the riverfront. The convention centre prides of 66,000m2 of convention space, a 5500-seat plenary hall, a ground floor function area with the capacity for hosting 8,400 guests plus 32 meeting rooms, a 450-seat auditorium and additional meeting rooms and organiser suites whilst the Exhibition Centre provides 30,000 square metres of purposebuilt clear-span exhibition space. The centre plays host to a diverse range of conferences and conventions, exhibitions, seminars, galas and cultural events. Since the facility officially opened in June 2009, the centre has attracted over 50 major international conventions and 190 national events, bringing a projected 250,000 delegates to the city. The design has received various awards including 2010 UDIA National Environmental Excellence Award, 2009 UDIA Environmental Excellence Award and 2009 BPN Sustainability Award. The Durban ICC is purpose-built, fully airconditioned and comprises six convention halls that allows for venue flexibility, catering for plenary seating of up to 12,300 delegates and raked seating for delegates. The 6 halls can be opened up to form one large venue of 9 250m² of flat floor column free space and there are three outdoor courtyard venues of over 1 000m². In addition the facility boasts up to 25 meeting rooms ranging from 43m² to 396m². In addition to the ICC Durban facilities the adjacent ICC Exhibition Centre offers up to m² of usable and flexible space across 2 halls. For large events there are other open spaces which can be used within the Durban ICC precinct where a variety of marquees and pavilions can be erected as required. SHANGHAI WORLD TRADE EXPO CENTER The Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre was the Expo Theme Pavilion for the Expo 2010; an event that attracted over 70 million people in attendance. The whole area of The Pavilion covers 11.5 hectares and its construction area is counted for 171, 000 sq. meters with provision for approximately 1, 500 of parking places located on both underground and surface areas. The former Expo Theme Pavilion, re-named The Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre has now been transformed into a sprawling, mixed-use district; the redevelopment aims to turn the Expo's quixotic theme, "Better City, Better Life," into a built reality. DURBAN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER The Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) is one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world. The facility boasts the largest area of column free, flat floor, multi-purpose space in Africa coupled with state of the art technology. As well as being named Africa's Leading Conference The Expo Exhibition Centre is one of the most famous venues of the country. It hosts some of the renowned international events every year linked to variety of industries.

4 edition: 04 May 2013 pg 03 The Iconic, World-Class International Convention Centre, Abuja The proposed International Convention Center is envisioned as one of the ways to make Nigeria among the 20 top leading economies in With an iconic architectural design and world class facilities, it will be among the best in the world. It is a project of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The proposed International Convention Center has the potential for significant economic impact; this is because meetings, conventions and trade shows have become a highly sought-after means for economic development. The convention center will serve to host Nigeria s national, regional and international events and put Nigeria in the radar as a destination of choice for event planners globally. It will also meet the demand for facility that can host Conventions, Conferences and Tradeshows The convention center site is located in the Central Business district of Abuja and the on-going development is project managed by Asset Management Group. The ICC boasts of an iconic design with: 1. Convention Halls 2. Exhibition halls 3. Observatory tower within a revolving restaurant 4. A world class 3 and 5-star hotel annexes 5. Multi-functional use of the facilities The center aims to be a leading destination for local, regional and international events The convention center is due for completion in 2015 and will be one of the many iconic features to beautiful Abuja landscape and also increase the value of real estate in the state.

5 edition: 04 May 2013 pg 04 NIGERIA S FIRST SUSPENSION/CABLE BRIDGE The New Lekki Bridge The Admiralty-Alexander (Lekki-Ikoyi) suspension link bridge is said to be one of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is Nigeria s and West Africa s first cablestayed bridge designed by specialists from Bilfinger Berger Nigeria GmbH. The bridge is designed to serve as a strategic by-pass to connect two heavily congested districts and to reduce the travel time along Falomo Bridge, Alfred Rewane Road, Independence Bridge and Ahmadu Bello Way. The bridge is designed to have a maximum of 3.5 per cent vertical alignment and minimum radius of 350 metres horizontal alignment with 90 metres pylon height from water level. Additional facilities to be added on full completion are 2.3mx2 walkway, 8.0mx2 carriageway (width) bridge a shape streetlights and cable ducts. meters in length, at the center of which is a 91- meter high pylon. The 1.358km bridge project was awarded in March 2009 by the Lagos State government and was built by construction giants, Julius Berger at a cost of N29bn. Though the project was due to be completed in However, the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, was able to deliver in 2013 for commissioning. The key economic values for the bridge are to shorten travel time between Ikoyi and Lekki as against what currently obtains and increase property valuation in the area. The structure comprises a 700-meter fullspan approach bridge. Connected to this is a segmental bridge of more than 600

When your work or behavior is criticized, try not to take it personally. Try to remove any attitude from feedback you receive and focus on the information. Chances are there s something in it you can learn from. In fact, that s the key value of criticism. It gives us a different perspective and provides the opportunity to learn. 18. BE HUMBLE. When you're right, don't gloat about it. Never say "I told you so!" 19. MAKE OTHERS FEEL IMPORTANT. Compliment others, emphasize their strengths and contributions, and help them whenever you can. They will enthusiastically help you in return. 20. JOIN ASSOCIATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Learn more about the industry, this can provide invaluable networking opportunities. 21. LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE At the end of the day: reflect. Take five minutes and ask yourself what was the most productive thing you did today? Learn from your answers and adjust your actions accordingly. The two-day workshop provided an opportunity for all the consultants to corroborate and re-strategize the design concept of the building.
