2 INNOVATION CAMPUS IS A PURPOSE-BUILT RESEARCH AND BUSINESS PRECINCT At the University of Wollongong, we recognise the importance of developing research partnerships and collaborations with business and industry. We believe that by working together we can make an invaluable contribution to research into many of the challenges that face the world in the 21 st century. The University developed the Innovation Campus as a dedicated research, development and business precinct where innovative corporations can co-locate with some of our leading research institutes and work together to develop solutions for a better world. Since the first buildings opened in 2008, the Innovation Campus has fulfilled this research vision in fields ranging from medical bionics to more efficient energy transmission, from mining engineering to computer software, and nanotechnology to sustainable building technologies. As more buildings open on the Innovation Campus, that range will undoubtedly become even more diverse. Our partners include international and national corporations that see the Innovation Campus as an ideal location in the Asia-Pacific region. 3 I SEE THE FUTURE INNOVATION CAMPUS The University of Wollongong s Innovation Campus (ic) is a 33-hectare beachside precinct offering the unique opportunity for commercial organisations to work alongside world-class research teams from the University in state-of-the-art facilities. Our vision is to enhance the economic and cultural wealth of ic participants by providing the best environment in the Asia-Pacific region for people and organisations to exchange and develop ideas and deliver innovative outcomes. The University of Wollongong s Innovation Campus has been named the Best Business and Industrial Park Development in Australia. The Innovation Campus took out the prestigious award at the Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards in May The environment and buildings on ic encourage greater employee commitment and well-being and contribute to knowledge generation in decision-making and change processes. From 3D bio-printing, materials engineering and medicinal chemistry to social transformation, the University of Wollongong s major research facilities and strengths are working tirelessly to solve complex, real-world problems. The Innovation Campus is home to two of the University s major research entities: The Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) houses researchers who are advancing materials research for applications ranging from medical bionics and energy generation and transmission through to batteries for electric vehicles; and The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) comprises of a wide range of researchers to holistically address the challenges of making our buildings sustainable and effective places in which to live and work. The Innovation Campus is connected with the University s other major research entities including the SMART Infrastructure Facility where researchers work on infrastructure solutions; the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) supporting better health services in the region; and Early Start, which is working to create and enrich the life opportunities of young Australians. The University of Wollongong is one of a small number of universities globally that is specifically addressing global issues by harnessing our multidisciplinary research strengths. The Global Challenges Program is a strategic research initiative that is focused on transformative interdisciplinary research that touches people s lives and changes worlds.
