2 Welcome to Southland Heritage Month march 2015 Southland s first Heritage Month in March 2013 was a great success and the programme for 2015 looks equally exciting. There are over 30 activities all over Southland, each celebrating a different aspect of our proud heritage and identity. It is my pleasure to welcome you - participants and visitors alike - and to wish you great enjoyment from a mix of activities that has something for everyone. By showcasing our heritage, we keep it alive for the benefit of our children and grandchildren. Frana Cardno Patron, Heritage South It has been exciting to watch this programme for Southland s second Heritage Month come together. We have such an abundance of diverse and interesting heritage in Southland. Of course it is there all the time, but Heritage Month is an opportunity to share and celebrate it with a wider audience. It is an opportunity to step outside our usual activities and places to see what other heritage groups are doing, or learn the stories of different parts of Southland. And it is an opportunity to welcome visitors - be they from other parts of Southland, New Zealand, or the world - to share our unique stories, traditions and places. For us it is a privilege to be able to promote these great attractions and events through March We are grateful to all our sponsors for helping us to do that, and to all the people who are organising events. We hope everyone makes the most of this opportunity to enjoy and celebrate our heritage. Rachael Egerton Chair, Heritage South Join us to launch Heritage Month March 2015 and the Discovering Glengarry s Community Spirit exhibition. Heritage Month is a month of heritage activities happening all around Southland showcasing the best of the region s heritage. Discovering Glengarry s Community Spirit is an exhibition using oral history to discover and uncover what makes this community unique. For more information about the Glengarry exhibition see page 23. Join us... Thursday 5 March at 5:30pm Eastern Suburbs Tavern, Glengarry Crescent.
