2 BACKGROUND The Northern Territory is serviced by five airports capable of handling large airline aircraft. Darwin International Airport serves as the gateway to South East Asia and beyond as well as the principal hub for interstate aviation services. Gove (Nhulunbuy), Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the Granites are served by NT based and interstate carriers. There are numerous airports within the NT serving towns and communities and receiving airline and charter services provided by regional airlines and general aviation carriers. The Northern Territory is also served by a number of helicopter charter operators. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND ACCOUNCEMENTS Silkair Airlines increased its services to Darwin from Singapore from January 2018, adding an additional 152 seats per week. Philippine Airlines suspended services to Darwin effective from March Philippine Airlines president and Chief Executive James Batista said the decision to cease services was due to the projected modest passenger loads, coupled with no yield, make the service to Darwin economically unsustainable. Qantas flights to London have stopped in Singapore instead of Dubai from March 2018 under a revamped alliance with Middle Eastern partner Emirates, as the airline prepares to increase its presence in the fast-growing Asian market. Donghai Airlines from China commenced twice weekly air services to Darwin from Shenzhen with the inaugural flight arriving in Darwin on 30 May The Chief Minister announced an unprecedented $103 million boost to the Department of Tourism and Culture to turbocharge the economy through tourism; $26.57 million for SMART marketing is a key part of the overall package, including $10.85 million to work with airlines towards cooperative marketing with key domestic and international airlines, driving visitation and supporting sustainable airline services. Also included is $1.6 million to boost the NT s domestic and global appeal through destination marketing. For further details refer to Alliance Aviation Services provide fly in fly out services to The Granites gold mine 600km NW of Alice Springs in Australia s Northern Territory. It has also signed a multi-year agreement to provide air charter flights in Australia for Japanese travel company JTB. The first flights to the Territory under the deal are due to take place in Virgin Australia will commence a new twice per week route between Brisbane and Alice Springs from 19 June 2018, providing increased connectivity for both domestic and international visitors to the Red Centre.
