3 CEO SWelcome As winter ends and the weather starts to warm up for spring, we re finalising many of the details for our renovated spaces. Soldiers on the Esplanade, our function space, is really taking shape and we look forward to its opening at the end of November. Our excitement continues as we watch Level 2 evolve with sweeping views of Bate Bay. It s really all about our brand new Member facilities on that Level. Your feedback has been very positive on the whole with many of you enjoying our winter promotions and offers. We re thrilled to bring you a whole suite of new promotions over coming months, including a $5000 travel voucher giveaway. Heading into spring we are looking forward to you all enjoying the new revamped Deck Area, it just looks amazing! Our next edition will be full of excitement as we are getting closer to completing the new lighter, brighter Cronulla RSL. Sue Mc Neill CEO PRESIDENT S Report Welcome to this issue of What s On. Since last issue, a lot has happened within your Club. May saw three Directors re-elected, unopposed at our AGM. June marked 65 years on Gerrale Street with a month of special offers, a milestone party and $10,000 cash giveaway with ten happy members winning $1,000 each. July saw one lucky member win an Audi A1, the first car we ve ever given away! Our renovations continue, on target and within budget, and we re excited about the times ahead with bookings already being taken for our soon to be completed function centre. 20 Thank you TO OUR HARD WORKING COMMUNITY GROUPS WHO MAKE OUR LOCAL AREA A FABULOUS PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY. Through the ClubGRANTS program, we provide funding for not-for-profit organisations, community groups and local sports clubs. 112 applications were received in the recent 2017/18 ClubGRANTS round. This year we re providing over $170,000 to 40 organisations in the form of cash donations, in-kind donations and complimentary room hire. 21 SUB BRANCH Some Notables 65 YEARS OF CRONULLA RSL MEMORIAL CLUB Stan Grimshaw The Cronulla Soldiers Club, the fore-runner of today s Cronulla RSL Memorial Club, was officially opened in 1944, but not at the address the Club calls home today. The Club was initiated by the Cronulla RSL Sub-Branch, started in 1921 by Boer War and WW1 ex-servicemen. Originally using loaned or rented premises, a long-term location was secured in the 1930s at the Cronulla School of Arts, with approval from Sutherland Shire Council, provided the Sub-Branch first paints it. So they did. The School of Arts was used for meetings and functions until 1943 when the Sub-Branch took a 3-year lease within the Cecil Hotel. By 1944 the formation of the Cronulla Soldiers Club was approved and was underway at the Cecil Hotel. In 1951, the Sub-Branch purchased land at 38 Gerrale Street, today s address. Building started and the club was officially opened in Still known as the Soldiers Club until 1948 when it was renamed Cronulla RSL Club. The word Memorial was added in 1953 when the new premises were officially opened by the then Governor of NSW, Sir John Northcott. The Sub-Branch remains strongly tied and involved with the Cronulla RSL Memorial Club who assist us in maintaining the traditional values of the RSL movement.
