4 Katoomba RSL Sub-Branch The Returned and Services League of Australia NSW Branch (RSL NSW) was formed in 1917 and currently has 46,593 Members throughout NSW. Mission Statement To provide for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-serving Defence Force Personnel and their dependants and promote Government and Community awareness of the need for a stable and progressive Australia. Membership Eligibility Any person who has served in the Australian Defence Forces, or served with or supported or was otherwise engaged with the Australian Defence Force or the Armed Forces of its Allies, for at least six months, or any other person provided for in the Constitution, may be admitted to Service Membership. Benefits of Membership include the following: Free welfare, advocacy and legal support and advice Injury assistance and rehabilitation services Membership discounts across a wide range of services Free quarterly RSL news magazine Affiliate Membership Eligibility Persons who are eligible to become an Affiliate Member must have attained the age of 18 years or older and comply with at least one of the following: Is a person who is a relative of a person (living or deceased) who is or was eligible to be a Service or Life Member of the League (proof of eligibility to be provided to the Sub-Branch); Is a person who has been awarded the Certificate of Merit or a National or State Certificate of Appreciation for giving valuable service to the League; Is a Cadet and/or Officer of Cadets; or Is any such person deemed by the Sub- Branch Committee to have provided significant service to the Sub-Branch and support the Objects of the League. RSL... Share the spirit of mateship JOIN NOW Well another Anzac Day has come and gone, but not without some drama this year. We had a difficult time organising the Anzac Day march. We were faced with meeting some excessive traffic management costs for the march to proceed, that were beyond our financial capacity. After much effort in trying unsuccessfully to gain funding for these costs, the Sub-Branch members reluctantly decided that the march would have to be cancelled this year. When this decision was made public, there was a backlash from the community and the media against the costs the Sub-Branch would have to meet. Finally, Blue Mountains City Council generously stepped in to meet the traffic management costs for all of the Anzac Day marches held throughout the Mountains. We are very grateful for the support from the Council, who were the only level of government to help us with our plight. We were able to hold the march after all, and continue the tradition in Katoomba which stretches back over 90 years. The traffic management costs will continue to be an issue into the future, and there is still much work to be done to achieve a sustainable resolution of this vexing issue. The Sub-Branch s Annual General Meeting was held on 27 March We were able to report to members that we have our heads above water financially though our revenues are thin. Our major challenge is that the Sub-Branch membership continues to decline with the passage of time, and there seems to be limited opportunities to recruit new members given the demographics in the Mountains. 11 Social Clubs Katoomba RSL Social Golf Club If you are interested in a fun, social golf experience please come and join the RSL s Social Golf Club. We play the 3rd Sunday of the month in the upper mountains clubs, sometimes out to Lithgow and Portland and later in the year a great trip away (this year going south in late October). There is a Calendar posted on the notice board!! The events are ambrose, two ball and singles formats, handicaps are worked out to be as helpful as possible, there are prizes, trophies to be won, Club Championships and the season ends up with Christmas Cheer. Snooker Club Turbo Snooker Tuesdays is up & running! This also means our club nights will be the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month starting the 28th April and continuing through till the 29th September. Winter Season is classed as Short Course as competitions are held Indoors in 25m pools. The end of the Summer season saw our swimmers heavily involved at all levels of school meets as well as Swimming NSW Championships. This is the busiest time of the year as while most Carnivals are held on weekends this is then added to by school carnivals at all levels being held through the week. We have our Annual Presentation being held at the Katoomba RSL Auditorium on 15th May at pm.
