3 Welcome 3 Invitation from Convenor of ANZHPBA Invitation from Convenor of ANZGOSA On behalf of the Australia & New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (ANZHPBA), I am pleased to inform you that our annual meeting for 2014 will be held in Queenstown, New Zealand on 2nd and 3rd October. This will be a conjoint meeting with ANZGOSA and will be appealing on both a scientific and social aspect. Our invited guests include Juergen Weitz from Dresden, Germany. The theme of the meeting will be Contentious issues in HPB/UGI Surgery, and therefore is likely to stimulate vigorous discussion. As you can see the meeting is on the Thursday and Friday of a school holiday week in beautiful Queenstown, so please join us for what promises to be a great meeting. There will also be a focus on training in GI and HPB surgery which will be of interest to all surgeons. 5 Invited Keynote Speakers 5 SIMON PATERSON-BROWN MBBS, MPhil, MS, FRCS (Edin), FRCS (Eng), FCS(HK), Simon qualified from St Mary s Hospital Medical School, London, in 1982 before training in surgery around London, the Home Counties, Hong Kong and Edinburgh. He has been Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh since His main clinical interests are benign and malignant oesophago-gastric surgery and emergency surgery. His other interests include patient safety initiatives in surgery, surgical assessment and training. At the present time he is Chairman of the Patient Safety Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is part of the development team for both NOTSS (Non-technical Skills for Surgeons) and SOS (Safer Operative Surgery) courses. J. JAN B. VAN LANSCHOT Jan is currently Professor of Surgery at the Erasmus Medical Centre and Erasmus University, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He qualified from the University of Utrecht and trained at the University Hospital Rotterdam-Dijkzigt where he was assistant professor and had postgraduate training in upper GI surgery and in colorectal surgery. In 1993 he became associate professor of surgery in the Academic Medical Centre at the University of Amsterdam where he was appointed Professor of Surgical Oncology in He returned to Rotterdam where he became chairman of the Department of Surgery ( ). His research interests currently lie mainly in the field of oesophago-gastric surgery and particularly upper GI cancers. JÜERGEN WEITZ MD, MSc After graduation of Medical School, University of Heidelberg and completion of his theses at the German Cancer Research Center, Jürgen received his surgical education at the Department of Surgery, University of Heidelberg and at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Currently, he is Chairman of the Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technical University, Dresden, Germany. The main focus of his clinical work is the surgical management of patient with complex surgical oncological and Hepato-pancreatico-biliary conditions. He also has a broad background as liver, kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon. His translational research interests include detection and characterization of minimal residual disease in malignancies.

The hotel is also minutes from various other outdoors activities such as bungee jumping, white water rafting and jet boating. The Coronet Peak ski area is only 20 minutes away, the Remarkables ski area 25 km and the Cardrona ski area 65 km to the north. 13 Accommodation 13 Booking your accommodation A limited number of rooms are being held in each hotel. Rooms will be allocated on a first-in basis as long as there are rooms available. A non-refundable deposit of one night s room rate is required to confirm your booking. On check out, your accommodation costs may be settled with cash, EFTPOS or credit card.
