Road access is crucial to the social and economic well-being of all our local communities. New Zealand has a large low volume roading network and each link plays a role in providing essential social connections and supporting economic development. The workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to meet and discuss your challenges with a wide range of practitioners that are part of the transportation community. Our 2011 program brings together an exciting combination of national and international experience, with speakers representing road users, network managers, contractors and researchers. We look forward to an exciting few days, kicking off with a Technical Tour on Wednesday afternoon in the Queenstown-Lakes District. There is a full programme of presentations and once again we have organised the popular table-topic session. Each round table discussion will offer opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and learn from others. The transport sector seems to be a magnet for challenges these days. If it s not nature reminding us that the best planning can be challenged in a flash, it s the tough economic times demanding we achieve more for less. Looking forward we need to identify, develop and share innovative solutions. We want to make sure we are part of a sector that continues Building Experience: Delivering Value. Janice Brass Workshop Chair Ken has studied unpaved roads across the US and as far away as New Zealand and has lectured on the subjects of Gravel Road Maintenance and Low Volume Road Maintenance to audiences of engineers, managers, elected officials and maintenance workers over the past 21 years. He also served as the lead author of the FHWA Gravel Roads Manual. Ken is currently the Program Manager of South Dakota Transport Assistance Programme (SDTAP), Brookings, South Dakata. He has 20 years as Field Services Manager for SDTAP and 12 years experience in the Hiway and heavy construction industry. He is currently President of the National Local Technical Assistance Program Association. Ken was honoured with induction into the South Dakota Transportation Hall of Honor in October, 2010 for his lifetime achievements in assisting local transportation agencies. Andrew Paterson Andrew will present on high altitude Roads, valley floor roads and low volume state highways. He has a high altitude road (Thompsons Gorge 920m) and a Valley Floor road (Moutere Disputed Spur Road) that pass through his property. Andrew also has a silage contracting business that involves travel throughout the Manuherikia and Ida Valley districts. He has experience in dealing with both the Central Otago District Council and the Otago Regional Council on all three of these. Through submissions, lobbying and constant communication things are slowly happening. Andrew is married to Tracy and have three children; and farms Matakanui Station, a high country sheep station, in the heart of Central Otago, Omakau. Matakanui Station is a 9,000 hectare property that winters 20,000 stock units, made up of 15,000 sheep and over 1,000 Cattle. LVR Technical Tour Snow Farm When: Wednesday 17 August Departs: 12.30pm (after lunch) Inclusions: Coach, tour leader, afternoon tea Due to the success of the technical tours at the previous Low Volume Roads workshops, we are again organising a tour around points of interest in regard to Low Volume Roads in the Southern Lakes region with a visit to the Snow Farm in Wanaka subject to weather. The Snow Farm is located at meters in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds offer various cold weather testing surfaces and facilities for counter seasonal winter testing from late June to late August. Snow surfaces of varying area and compaction including snow circles Ice surfaces, straightaways and circles Flat split u surfaces - ice and heated asphalt Split u gradient surfaces - ice and asphalt or concrete of varying gradients Undulating Ride and Handling courses of varying length between 1000m m x 6m - 8m. If, following your registration, you are unable to attend please notify the organiser as soon as possible to arrange a transfer of registration or a partial refund. Notification received by 17 July, 2011 incurs a $90 cancellation fee. For cancellations notified after 17 July, 2011, refunds will be made at the discretion of the organising committee and paid after the workshop. Insurance All insurance is the responsibility of the registrants.
