This is a tough, competitive idustry at the best of times, with low margis ad high costs the orm. It ca oly get tougher at a time whe fuel prices are soarig ad ecoomic ucertaity is risig. We take little pleasure from seeig other airlies fail because it is our firm belief that competitio is a essetial compoet of our idustry. Seeig this happe is a remider that o-oe owes us a livig, either: we have to go out ad ear it every day. Oasis s closure left a lot of passegers i a difficult ad stressful situatio, so we reassured the govermet that Cathay Pacific would do all it could to help those straded. I live ad work i Aucklad, so am some distace away from Hog Kog. I ca appreciate ad fully uderstad the impossibilities of tryig to iclude all staff for such a evet. However, I ca t help but feel a tad aggrieved. It appears o effort was made to iclude a percetage of the outport colleagues! I the Daily News it stated that over 400 prizes were give away at the Gala Dier ad all Hog Kog-based staff were eligible for the prize draw (whether they were there or ot). I thik it s bad eough that oe of the outport staff were ivited, whe over 3,000 seats were allocated, but to be excluded from the prize draw too adds isult to ijury. I ca appreciate the logistics of sedig a HDTV to a outport, alog with duty liabilities but certaily most of the other prizes could have bee distributed! I fid the other area outside Dakotas to be stark ad like sittig i a goldfish bowl. This is a shame as, with a bit of effort, it could be made pleasat ad comfortable. I would like to suggest placig some chairs ad tables for the smokers area as well as some plats ad more comfortable furiture to make the patio more ispirig, especially as this is a very visible area of Cathay City.
