The dynamic husband and wife team of Paul Martell and Jane Scali have been treading the boards on and off the stage for over twenty years around Australia in clubs, casinos, the Hilton circuit, sporting events and at corporate functions. They have won 20 MO Awards with Paul voted by his peers Comedian of The Year on fourteen occasions and Jane six times for Female Vocal Entertainer. The Agriplex Group Westpac Rescue Helicopter Ball will be held at the Scone Golf Club on Saturday 26 October with all proceeds going to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. This is the third time the ball has been held in Scone and follows last year s highly successful event which raised over $40,000. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service plays an integral role in assisting critical care patients across NSW. The community owned and operated aero medical search and rescue service costs $11 million annually to operate. The three helicopters and crew service the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, Tamworth & New England 24/7. 4 creative Creative Arts arts UHCM Concert & Jazz Band to Perform Music from the Movies Enjoy music from fi lm favourites such as Remember the Titans, Top Gun, The Blues Brothers, How To Train Your Dragon and more, when the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music s Concert and Jazz Bands perform with the Muswellbrook Shire Concert Band in Scone on Sunday evening 22 June. 5 creative arts Renowned Guitar Picker, Lance Birrell to Perform in the Hunter By Sophie Fitzgerald Tamworth-based musician Lance Birrell will be making an appearance at Muswellbrook s Railway Hotel as he travels extensively through north-western New South Wales over the next month performing. Born and raised in Port Pirie in South Australia, the versatile performer has entertained all over Australia starting from a young age; he developed a fondness for The Shadows after being introduced to guitar. His talent was recognised early, joining his fi rst band Detour in his teens with whom he played with for ten years. Infl uenced by artists such as Graeme Hugo, Randy Travis, The Beatles, AC/DC and John Fogerty, his repertoire includes country, rock, oldies and classic rock tunes, staged both publicly and for functions. Highly regarded for his guitar picking, the now soloist has worked with many incredible artists both in Australia and internationally through live performances and recordings. 8 the equine trend & more RDA - Developing Ability and Enriching Lives By Sophie Fitzgerald Voluntary and non-for-profi t, the incredible work of the Muswellbrook RDA or Riding for the Disabled, goes somewhat unseen amongst the community. The organisation provides those with a disability a chance to experience the specialised horse related program, proven to be very benefi cial. Hunter Charity Giving New Life to Animals in Need By Laura Sykes With a heartbreaking number of animals put to sleep every year in pounds and other animal care facilities because new homes cannot be found, one local charity is performing monumental work in giving some of these animals a new chance at life. Over fi ve hundred animals in the Hunter are re-homed every year thanks to the dedication and determined hard work of volunteers at not-for-profi t Hunter Animal Rescue. Granted charity status in 2009, the group of ninety strong members who volunteer their time and love to fi nd new homes for their furry friends work closely with animal care facilities in Muswellbrook, Port Stephens and Lakehaven, and in some cases have halved the numbers of cats and dogs euthanised in these facilities. Cats and dogs taken in by Hunter Animal Rescue are placed in the care of members who provide temporary but loving foster homes for the animals personality, likes and dislikes so that they are able to be closely matched with an appropriate home. Most of the animals come from pounds or are given up by owners who, for one reason or another, are no longer able to care for their pet and wish to ensure they end up in a new loving home. HAR charges an adoption fee to cover the costs of microchipping, desexing and other necessary veterinary work. Their vision statement says it all, Riding Develops Abilities and it does just that, enabling citizens with disabilities to challenge themselves and gain a sense of achievement through caring for and riding the horses, not to mention enjoying themselves immensely at the same time. The experience is safe, healthily stimulating and therapeutic, most defi nitely something the participants look forward to each week. Now a registered charity, the national company has been operating for over forty years with several branches. The incredible fact about the RDA is that it is made up of and run entirely by volunteers who simply want to help out and gain satisfaction through their work. RDA centres across Australia provide suitable horses, trained volunteers, coaches and all the resources needed to run the activities. New members are always welcomed, and new foster homes always needed. Anyone can join up to donate, volunteer, provide a foster home or adopt one of the many dogs and cats already in the charity s care. Hunter Animal Rescue runs several events during the year to promote and raise funds to put towards helping more and more animals gain another chance at life with a family of their own. Hunter Animal Rescue will be in attendance at Pooch Picnic at Pepper Tree Wines on Sunday 11 August, followed by the 18 August at Sacred Tree Markets held at St Brigid s School Grounds at Branxton, where proceeds of coin donations at the gate will be donated to the charity. 9 the equine trend & more Is he sick or just old? The Four Red Flags of Disease There are many things about us that change as we get older. Grey hair, few more wrinkles and, often, a few niggling health issues. Our pets are no different, however it is their inability to tell us that all is not well. As owners of older pets, we need to know what to look for, the red fl ags that our mate may be unwell or in pain. Red Flag 1 - Drinking. Increased drinking is associated with many disease processes such as diabetes, heart disease, Cushings disease and kidney failure. Your pet should not drink more that 60 ml per kg body weight which is about a litre of water for your average kelpie per day. So if your chihuahua is lapping his way through a big bowl, chances are something is wrong and he needs to see the vet. Red Flag 2 - Changes in behaviour Animals are creatures of habit so if they change what they do you can be sure that there is a reason. Arthritis is a common cause of behavioural change with animals showing signs ranging from aggression to simply doing not very much at all. Going to the toilet near their beds may be a sign that they are sore and don t want to travel far. Pets can get dementia and will bark constantly at nothing. Thyroid problems can lead to alterations in temperament from cranky and aggressive to placid and lazy. Cats with sore mouths will often stop eating biscuits and only want the wet stuff, you may think their tastes have changed when, sadly, their mouth hurts. Red Flag 3 - Changes in body Changes in an animals shape can be signifi cant too. Pets with hip arthritis will get a heavy front end and lean wasted back end. Thyroid and kidney problems can lead to extreme weight loss or weight gain. Animals with heart disease, Cushings disease or abdominal cancer will often have a pot bellied appearance. Diabetes can lead to cataracts in the eyes. Red Flag 4 - Strange smells Does your pet have bad breath? Most cases of halitosis are due to dental disease and this is very common in older animals. We seldom pull the lips back and inspect the back teeth and we often get a shock when we do. Pets teeth self clean as they chew on bones or tough meat. If an animal has a sore tooth they do not chew on that side and gingivitis and infection will develop. Cats are prone to painful cavities in the neck of the teeth and will also get ulcers secondary to kidney disease. Diabetics will have ketone breath. All of these problems can cause our pets discomfort and, unfortunately, most of us simply do not know how to read the signs. If your pet has a red fl ag, get him checked by your veterinarian, he will be happier and healthier for it. By Laura Sykes After becoming the fi rst Australian gold medallist at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Steven Bradbury is inspiring people all over the country with his story of hard work and determination paying off against all odds. When Bradbury won the 1000 metre short track speed skater event in 2002, some attributed it to his dedication to the sport, and some called it luck. But, aside from managing to avoid a pileup that cleared the track of all other competitors and that allowed him a clear fi eld to victory, the Aussie knows what it means to have to fi ght to get to the top. Now a motivational speaker, Steven Bradbury will make an appearance at Scone RSL on the 28 June in the upstairs auditorium to speak about his extraordinary experiences. Joined by Scone Singers and Dr Steve Sylvester, the night promises to be as fun fi lled and entertaining as it is enlightening and motivational. Tickets are priced at just $15, with proceeds being donated to future Neighbourhood Centre projects. Bar snacks, tea and coffee will be available throughout the evening. Indulge Yourself at Pigsty In July Organisers of The Gum Ball have released information on their brand new winter event, Pigsty In July, to be held at the same venue as The Gum Ball, Dashville, Lower Belford on Saturday the 20 July. Coinciding with the Singleton Arts Festival grand finale, the one-day affair is a second-hand formal themed event, focusing on the indulgence of warm winter food and beverage.
