In addition to vital search and rescue missions the helicopters provide paramedic supported patient transfers from accident scenes to hospitals [primary transfers]. The helicopters also transfer patients between hospitals [secondary transfers]. In the last financial year Scone, Muswellbrook and Tamworth alone required 29 primary missions and 132 secondary missions. Since April of this year, readers of The Entertainer have witnessed a signifi cant transformation from a black and white periodical to a niche publication purely focused on what s going on with entertainment, lifestyle and leisure in both the Upper Hunter and Hunter Valley. A gathering of people including guests from Newcastle, Maitland, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone and Murrurundi toasted the success and celebrated the rebirth of The Entertainer at the eclectic Hunter Belle Café in Muswellbrook. Brad Franks, curator of the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre performed the role of Master of Ceremonies superbly with guest speakers represented by Cr Jennifer Lecky (Muswellbrook Shire Council), Michelle Weir (Majestic Cinemas) and Matt Johnston (Gumball Music Festival). The devils are being bred to repopulate the Tasmanian Mainland where critical numbers of this iconic Australian species have been diminished by Devil Facial Tumour. Captive breeding programmes of Tasmanian devils offer the only hope to avoid the Devil becoming extinct. 6 food & wine World Class Gelato Unveiled at Hunter Belle Cheese Hunter Belle Cheese has recently unveiled a tempting array of gelato as part of their exhibit From Grass to Gelato. We wondered what we could add to the business in addition to the cheese and café. We wanted to ensure all products were made with dairy so we introduced fudge made with butter and gelato made with milk. explained business owners Tania and Geoff Chesworth. Tania and Geoff say that the feedback has been brilliant. Everyone s loving it and commenting on the taste and quality. said Geoff. We sourced a world class fridge and gelato maker then employed the services of a gold medal winning gelato maker to train us. We pushed the products on our Facebook Page to soft launch them and get some word of mouth marketing happening and the popularity has escalated from there. We have even had people say that it is the best gelato they have had outside Italy which is high praise indeed. Whilst Geoff says he likes every fl avour of gelato Tania s favourite is the lemon sorbet. We are using the lemons off Geoff s brother s tree. Tania says. They won t last forever so local donations of lemons are always gratefully accepted! The crowd favourite remains the mango sorbet (made with real fruit) and a new fl avour to tempt you is the fi g and roasted almond. 8 the equine trend & more Tocal Australian Stock Horse Sale Success This year s annual Tocal stock horse sale was once again successful for the College, according to College Principal Dr Cameron Archer. The average price for Tocal horses was $5,274 with a full clearance of horses; 26 horses were offered for sale with 21 of these being trained by Tocal students and staff. Most had been bred on the property. The average price was a little lower than last years record sale. Tocal Ivy brought $12,900 a near record price for the Tocal sales and was purchased by an Upper Hunter buyer. The results were within our expectations, Dr Archer said. Horses were purchased by buyers from Victoria, ACT and throughout much of NSW. Successful sales like this are only possible through the hard work and commitment by many people, but I pay particular tribute to Mr Warwick Lawrence and Simone Harvey, Tocal staff members. Warwick and Simone s dedication and contribution are second to none and this is refl ected in the results we get. The support of everyone involved in the sale makes it a most successful and enjoyable event, Dr Archer said. The Tocal Stock Horse Sale has become an annual event in the College s calendar that students and staff work towards virtually all the year, Dr Archer said. We are very pleased with the result of the sale as it provides direct feedback from the market that our staff and students are producing a type of horse which is sought after. Applications for 2013 courses are stronger than usual, Dr Archer said. Tocal s reputation for providing quality education and training is well known and that encourages enrolments each year. We will be fully enrolled in Muswellbrook Dairy Farmer Milks America s Richest Race Article by Brian Russell Ian Wilkes, a horseman who grew up on his father s dairy farm between Muswellbrook and Denman in the Hunter Valley, as a trainer has milked the big end of the prize money for America s richest race, the US$5million Breeders Cup Classic, one ran over 10 furlongs (2000m) at the weekend at California s Santa Anita Park. His biggest training triumph, Wilkes captured this main feature of the two day US$26million Breeders Cup carnival when his E Dubai (a Mr. Prospector Darley Hunter Valley visitor for four seasons, ) 4-year-old colt Fort Larned led all the way. It was Fort Larned s eighth win in19 starts and his second Group1 success, following on victory at this level on August 4 in the $750,000n Whitney Invitational (nine furlongs) at Saratoga. Also winner of a Group 3 race over 9 ½ furlongs in new track record time, he has been described as one of the fastest and hardestknocking older horses in America. Ian Wilkes is a brother to Wayne Wilkes, a Port Macquarie trainer who prepares horses for Nathan Tinkler s father Les, owner of a breeding farm in the district. Their own father, Reg Wilkes, is also in the region and has an owner trainer licence. He bred and raced horses when he had the dairy farm near Muswellbrook. Ian Wilkes has been in America for over 20 years, starting off with veteran trainer Carl Nafzger. He did much of the work when the Nafzger trained horse Street Sense took out the 2007 Kentucky Derby. When Nafzger semi-retired several years ago, Wilkes became the trainer for many of the stable s horses, including Fort Larned. Depression Support Group Public Meeting The Scone Neighbourhood Centre will be facilitating a public meeting at 6:00 pm on Monday, 12 November for people interested in establishing a support group for people with depression. Depression may make it diffi cult for people to function properly or make them reluctant to participate in the things they once enjoyed doing, said Mrs Lee Watts, manager of the Scone Neighbourhood Centre. We have been approached to assist in starting a support group and believe this is an important initiative which can offer support and something extra to those who experience depression. The meeting will be at the Neighbourhood Centre at 130 Liverpool St, Scone and anyone interested in coming along is invited to attend. The meeting will give you the chance to have your say about whether you would like to see a support group in Scone how and how and when it can be created. The company was formed by Robert Shannon in the early 1970 s when he became disillusioned with the high costs and limited support from main stream automotive insurance companies. The rules were simple: One couple per car; No showers; no hairbrush; no change of clothes; no iphone; no books; no television. One ten minute toilet break every three hours. What the couples wore into the car was they had to wear for the 5 days. All rubbish had to be stowed in the car. Each couple had to be involved in small contests across the week to gain points. The top two couples picked a key each on Friday morning and the key that unlocked the Nissan Micra (donated by Muswellbrook Nissan) was the winner. It came down to two couples: Ben and Alison from Car 4, and Luke and Kimmie from Car 5 with Luke and Kimmie declared the eventual winners.
