2 what s on from page 1 Act quickly to secure one of the few remaining tickets for the Mangoola Coal Marquee [air conditioned] which will host guest speaker Craig Hamilton and MC Murray Martin (Poet, Author, and Entertainer). A much-sought-after motivational speaker, Craig Hamilton is known to many people. He has for many years been a high profi le sports presenter on the ABC. With the many and varied interests and activities Craig pursues in his life, he is also one of the 800,000 Australians who each year suffers from the insidious illness - Depression. Australian rugby league player Paul Harragon says Craig Hamilton s story is one of pure courage and iron will to break through the bonds of darkness that mental illness can bring. In addition to the Marquee festivities the Muswellbrook Race Club will host a series of Pit Stops where specialists in mental health RSA & RCG Training RSA $135 SITHFAB009A RCG $135 SITHGAM006A 12th & 13th Nov 2012 Muswellbrook RSL Club Enrol in more than one course And receive a discount Call: all enquiries issues will be on hand to allow people with questions relating to family members, friends or themselves to drop by in an informal setting and source information or just have a chat. Race Club Secretary Helen Sinclair says that the mining-strong local community face a number of workplace challenges that include long hours on the job, time away from family, and split shifts. Racing provides a relaxed social environment and it is also neutral ground so people may have more time and be more receptive to accessing the information that the Pit Stops provide. Ms. Sinclair explains. ATAC Training To secure Marquee tickets or should you require additional information about the Community Race Day please contact the Muswellbrook Race Club on or admin@muswellbrookraceclub.com.au All proceeds raised on Community Race Day will be donated to mental health research and services in the local region. Australian Training & Consulting (ATAC) is an approved provider to NSW Department of Education & Communities. We are able to deliver a range of qualifi cations to existing employees and new entrant trainees in a range of industry areas, ATAC RTO compliance and trainer and assessor, Patrick Foley said. There are enormous benefi ts to employers of ensuring their employees are trained to national competency standards. Mr Foley said many have already reached these standards in most - or even all - of their job responsibilities, and through the use of federally-funded programmes ATAC can recognise their skills and issue them with national training qualifi cations. Where employees fail to meet national standards in the odd area of responsibility, training can be provided in many programs including RSA, RCG and WHS to ensure that they reach the standards needed for employment. To deliver training and assessment services in the Hunter, ATAC is supporting the region by having a trainer and assessor living in Maitland so that ATAC can deliver these services in a prompt and cost effective way. Overall, employers benefi t from ensuring staff are trained and have certifi cates in relationship to the work they perform, guaranteeing improvements in profi tability, marketability and more effi cient use of resources, Mr Foley said.. Call the professional staff at ATAC for information about some of the popular nationally-recognised qualifi cations. ATAC are also happy discuss the various funding options available. 3 what s on Civic Movie Review: Any Questions for Ben Release Date: Genre: Comedy. Stars: Josh Lawson, Rachael Taylor, Felicity Ward, Daniel Henshall And Christian Clark. Running Time: 104 Minutes SUMMARY: Ben is 27, kind on the female eye so never without a date, his pay packet puts most top executive s to shame and his life is commitment free. So far so good. To be honest most people would sign on the dotted line at this point and ask no further questions. We all desire a similarly perfect life do we not? It is not until a careers night at his former school when Ben is forced to turn his attention to what constitutes his life and indeed the lives of those around him. This is a sassy Australian comedy with a crisp dialogue and a great soundtrack. Yes the rich young executive has to re-assess his life and come out a better person plot is not new but the Australian sense of humour has a wonderfully vibrant characteristic of not being afraid to turn the spotlight on itself and it is this ingredient which makes this movie so enjoyable. 5 creative arts Artwork Photography for Artists Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and Arts Upper Hunter are joining forces to bring a series of workshops together for artists from the Upper Hunter. Greg Weight, a well-known and respected photographer, will be in the Upper Hunter for two days conducting free workshops for artists on how to photograph their works for electronic submission to web sites, competitions and self-published books. Greg has photographed artworks for many private and public institutions and artists for an extended period and he will be instructing artists on how to go about achieving an excellent result. The need for this workshop was amply demonstrated with the submission for the last two art prizes in Muswellbrook, where artists submissions were let down by poor quality images. This may or may not have had an impact on the outcome of their submission. With more and more art prizes now demanding electronic submission, more and more information being communicated electronically around the globe submission to websites and used for the purposes of turning those images to print the timing could not be more pertinent. Participation in these workshops will be strictly limited to ten per workshop, this is an absolute must. Bookings will be taken on a fi rst in best dressed basis. Participants will also need to be computer literate as Greg will be using Photoshop for part of the workshop and the participants will be using it as well. 6 leisure & lifestyle Opening the Gate to the Victoria Hotel s Riverbank It s been a while since locals rode their horses across the Hunter River and through the back gate of the iconic Victoria Hotel for a beer, and there were plenty of weeds to prove it. Until a few weeks ago, the once popular thoroughfare to the Moonan Flat drinking hole was overgrown with privet, balloon vine, willow trees and a mess of other exotic species. Using funding from the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority s (CMA) incentives program, the hotel s newest publicans Peter Barnett and Kathy Hannaford hired a team from Conservation Volunteer Australia (CVA) to rid the historical patch of these menacing plants and reopen access to the waterway for hotel visitors. We want to achieve a weed-free environment on our riverbank and incorporate the Hunter River into the Victoria Hotel business and residence explained Ms Hannaford. After replanting the area with native species we plan to place small signs along the site to inform our visitors of the wildlife that will be attracted to the vegetation. We also want patrons to understand the effect that littering has on the river s wildlife, which includes populations of platypus, turtles and trout. CMA Implementation Offi cer Nanette Lamrock explained There is potential to reestablish native riparian vegetation along the 150m stretch of river bank, which will improve wildlife habitat and water quality. Weed control and revegetation will occur in planned stages to prevent erosion and maintain a protective canopy over the site until native species are established. Follow up weed control will be integral to the project s success. This is only a small patch but the best way to manage it is to have the community engage in weed control on the entire river. I think Peter and Kathy are doing a wonderful thing by showcasing what can be achieved by managing weeds along waterways. They ve now got access to their part of the river and they plan to share it with the community. Across the region, landowners and volunteers are working with various organisations, such as Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), to regain access to riverbanks by removing thick exotic weeds and plant infestations. Upcoming Events Old Time and New Vogue Dances The next Monthly Dance will be held at Aberdeen Bowling Club on Saturday evening, 27th October at 7.30pm. Come and witness the action this Saturday 20 October at the Scone Rugby Club, Aberdeen Street, Scone from 1pm til late. The hurling exhibition (semi fi nals & grand fi nal matches) will feature our local Scone rugby stars as well as professional players from Melbourne and Sydney. The hurling exhibition is part of the Luck of the Irish Benefi t for Scone resident Gavin Owens. The talented rugby player and valued employee of Primo Smallgoods suffered serious head and back injuries and had to have his left leg amputated after he was struck by an express train last month. Monies raised through the appeal will help Gavin with the costs of ongoing medical care, rehabilitation and prosthetics that will be necessary to assist his recovery. Any excess funds will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Intensive Care Unit of the John Hunter Hospital; emergency services that assisted in saving Gavin s life. Saturday s community benefi t will also see a special guest appearance by Sam Bailey, author of Head over Heels - a story of tragedy, triumph and romance in the Australian Bush. We have been approached to assist in starting a support group and believe this is an important initiative which can offer support and something extra to those who experience depression. The meeting will be at the Neighbourhood Centre at 130 Liverpool St, Scone and anyone interested in coming along is invited to attend. The meeting will give you the chance to have your say about whether you would like to see a support group in Scone how and how and when it can be created. 9 the equine trend & more Ticks and Snakes Article by Dr April Brennan With the warmer weather in Australia comes a few unwanted visitors to our pets. Over spring and summer at Pet Medical Vets, some of the most common emergencies in dogs and cats we see involve snakes and paralysis ticks. Paralysis Ticks: are a particular type of tick not actually found in the townships of Scone and Muswellbrook yet.. however they are found around Rouchel and Barrington. The most common place our pets collect ticks however is when we take them away on holidays with us. Ticks like to live in warm climates in scrub and bushy areas and can be found all along the eastern coast of Australia as well as throughout northern NSW and Qld. Paralysis ticks attach to your pets skin and burrow deeply until well attached. Once attached they inject a neurotoxin that can be fatal to both dogs and cats. Some of the more common symptoms of paralysis tick envenomation include: Wobbliness and weakness of the back legs, progressing to partial or complete paralysis Regurgitation or vomiting Losing their voice/alterations in the sound of their bark or meow Laboured, shallow breathing The progressive paralytic nature of the toxin means that it can be fatal as the animal becomes unable to swallow or breathe on its own. Even after a tick has been removed from the skin, its toxin can still spread so it is vital to take any suspected tick animal straight to the vet. If you have removed the tick already you should take it with you for identifi cation. Your vet will check your pet and stage the degree of toxicity and probably recommend hospitalisation for treatment include tick antiserum. Prevention is always best - if you are in a tick area use a registered tick product such as Frontline, Advantix or Kiltix. However no pet medical SCONE MUSWELLBROOK DENMAN product is 100% effective so it is very important to fi nger search your pet all over their body every day for any ticks, especially around the head, neck, eyes and between toes. Snakes: The most common snakes seen in this area are the Brown and Black snake families- including Red Bellied Blacks, Tiger snakes and King Browns. As the weather warms up the snakes come out of hibernation and, with the natural hunting instincts of dogs and cats, it may not be long before the snakes cross paths with our pets. Many snakes will avoid humans and dogs if possible however if they feel threatened they will bite. If you fi nd your pet with a snake it is very important to remember your own safety and not try to catch the snake. The symptoms of a snakebite are very variable, however some of the most common signs include: Sudden weakness or collapse Shaking or tremors of the muscles, possibly paralysis Vomiting Dilated pupils Blood in urine or bleeding from the mouth. Treatment will depend on the symptoms your animal is showing and may include Owner with her dog. Scone Pet Parade 2012 IV fl uids, antivenom and oxygenation/ ventilation. Snakebites can be fatal between 20 minutes up to days after being bitten, and the earlier the treatment the better the chance of success. It is always much better to be cautious and have your pet checked as soon as possible, than to wait and see. It is common for animals that have been bitten to collapse and show symptoms of snakebite and then seem to recover and appear normal. This is usually followed by a second collapse which is usually fatal - so if you pet shows any symptoms at all they should be brought straight to the vet. Snakes are part of living in rural Australia so the best thing is to try and minimise the chances of your pet coming into contact with a snake- avoid long grass, supervise them near dams/creeks or water and don t let them roam unsupervised. 10 leisure & lifestyle Aberdeen Nursery s Spring Garden Advice Spring fl owering peaches and plums can be pruned as soon as the last blossoms have fallen. Early peaches and plums should have the crop thinned while still immature; remove suffi cient to allow each remaining fruit plenty of room in which to develop. Passionfruit can be planted this month. Plant them in a sheltered position with a north-easterly aspect. Lavenders need frequent light clippings to keep them in good shape. The best way to do this is to continually pick the fl owers. Never cut back into hard, old wood as it won t re-shoot. Sprinkle some dolomite around the base of all lavender plant. They love it! Family History Fair Sunday 21 October 2012 The Maitland & District Genealogical Society will be hosting a family history fair at the Maitland City Bowls, Sports & Recreation Club, Arthur Street, Rutherford. 11 leisure & lifestyle Partnership Helps Children Learn to Live Sustainably Muswellbrook children have been learning how to grow vegetables and make scarecrows recently as part of Muswellbrook Shire Council s Sustainability Street programme, supported by the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund. The three year partnership involves community members in a street, neighbourhood or group working together as villages to plan how their households can reduce their use of energy and water, increase recycling, decrease waste and have a positive impact on native biodiversity. These activities are promoted through projects, open community days, workshops and school and holiday activities such as planting community gardens. Muswellbrook Shire Council Environmental Project Offi cer Kylie Watkins said: This initiative allows community members to make a real difference to the sustainability of our community. The aim of the Sustainability Street programme is to increase awareness about how easy it is to live sustainably and encourage long term environmental behavioural changes in the community. We also hope that this programme will enable the creation of a sustainable community engagement programme to continue to educate people about living in a more sustainable way. The programme includes community open days, workshops, holiday activity programmes and the WotoDo programme involving educational theatre group Vox Bandicoot performing at local schools and helping one school each year develop their own play about sustainability. Ms Watkins said: Through the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund s support of the Sustainability Street programme, we are able to offer activities and workshops free of cost. Our most recent activity was Going Potty at the Muswellbrook Library where we had over 100 people attend and get their green thumbs out to learn about planting vegetables at home. It is important for the community to have the opportunity to participate in Sustainability Street as the programme helps to build on the sense of community in Muswellbrook and allows people to meet, share and build upon ideas of living more sustainably. Simple steps such as recycling properly, swapping light bulbs and switching off appliances at the wall make a big and positive difference to the sustainability of our community. Coal & Allied principal community investment Stephen Sneddon said: The Coal & Allied Community Development Fund is proud to partner with Muswellbrook Shire Council to support the Sustainability Street initiative. Sustainability Street is an important programme for the community to work together towards a sustainable future. We encourage local community members to get involved in the programme and start implementing sustainable practices into their everyday lives. Coal & Allied is committed to supporting projects that deliver long term sustainability to its local communities. The Coal & Allied Community Development Fund has invested more than $11M in the Hunter Valley since its inception in A further $4.5M is available over the next three years. For more information about how you can get involved in the Sustainability Street programme, contact Muswellbrook Shire Council s Kylie Watkins on or kylie.watkins@muswellbrook.nsw.gov. au.
