They include: Sir Howard Walter Florey. Awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1945 for his discovery of penicillin. Sir Frank McFarlane Burnet. Awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1960 for his discovery of acquired immunological tolerance. Sir John Carew Eccles. Awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1960 for his discoveries concerning the ionic mechanisms of the nerve cell membrane. Professor Peter Doherty. Awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 2005 for their joint discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Gordon went on to praise the level of medical and scientific researchers in Australia, and also predicted that our next Nobel laureate could well be Doctor Ian Frazer for his work in developing the HPV vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancers. Ballet Haley and Abbey Barclay were introduced by our president Stewart McDonald. They talked about their lives growing up in Ballarat and their love of dance which began for both of them around the age of 3. Both very accomplished in ballet, they spoke about the challenge of setting up a ballet school in the 'cultural void' that is Geelong. By contrast, Ballarat has no football, but the publicity and support that the arts get in their city of origin is noticeably more prominent. More generally, they spoke of trying to lift the standing of the arts in Geelong by throwing their weight behind events like the Geelong Eisteddfod, which sadly is lacking publicity and support from the Geelong community, and is in danger of folding. Well done to both these talented youngsters, and I am sure we wish them all the best. Announcements Jason Ah Sam gave a reminder for the volunteer of the year awards, which are to be held next Wednesday, the 17 of August, 2011, at 17:30 hrs. The venue is the Geelong city hall in Gheringhap street, Geelong. Attendees were asked to be on time. Graham needs assistance with the footy gate keeping this Sat 13 th and 27 th of August. It is another good fund raiser so contact Graham is you can assist. Footy Gate Keeping There are only 2 more weeks that need cover, August 13th and 27th. We are desperate for a couple more volunteers for this valuable fundraising activity. Anyone who could possibly help please contact Graham
