6 Russell McCart Biography Russell was born in Toowoomba and did most of his schooling at Churchie in East Brisbane. He commenced his early career with a cadetship at Tubemakers, where he worked for four years while studying a Bachelor of Business at QUT. In his early 20s, Russell travelled to the United States where he was a professional sailor on the ocean racing circuit that included the east and west coasts, the Caribbean and the Fastnet in England. Russell spent three years in the States managing and skippering racing yachts and was working in Rhode Island when Australia won the America s Cup. Russell and three others still hold the record of the smallest official competitor to complete the Sydney to Hobart on Klinger. He has sailed in the Sydney to Hobart 13 times and won the PHS division on handicap skippering Spirit of Mateship with returned servicemen as crew in Russell returned to Australia in 1984 and commenced work with AV Jennings where he rose to the position of General Manager (House and Land Development Group Qld). In 1992, he was recruited to start up Mirvac operations in Queensland as CEO and was a board member of Mirvac Development Australia. During Russell s time as CEO, Mirvac constructed and completed numerous large developments in South East Queensland including The Grosvenor, Mariners Reach, Liberty, Beaches, Quay West and the Sebel. In 1997, he founded Meridien Developments with two partners and it grew to become one of the largest privately owned and diversified property groups that delivered distinctive projects in residential development, student accommodation (UniLodge), retirement living (Retire Australia) and marinas (Meridien Marinas). In 2011, Meridien was rebranded Pacifica Developments and continues to deliver a diversified range of projects such as the Queens Arms Sage Hotel in James Street. Pacifica currently has a number of projects around Australia. Russell is chair of the Churchie Foundation and is on the board of Brothers Rugby Union Club. He has been a patron of the Kids of Kokoda Charity for 17 years. This charity distributes direct medical and educational aid to the locals who live on the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua New Guinea. This aid has led to a lowered infant mortality rate and has improved living standards in the region. Russell is past Commodore of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and was a flag officer at the Squadron for six years. Russell also works with returned servicemen and was part of a team that formed a charity that was to become the RSL Queensland operated Mates4Mates. Mates4Mates has helped many veterans adapt to civilian life and deal with physical and mental issues stemming from active service. Russell mentors and supports half a dozen veterans through regular contact. One veteran lived with Russell and his family for two years and it is not uncommon for his family to have a veteran staying in their guest room. Russell is a keen hiker and has walked the Kokoda Track fifteen times, including there and back in five days and leading groups for ANZAC Day services at Isurava. He has also climbed Mt Killimanjaro and Mt Kinabalu and walked extensively through the Kimberley and other parts of Australia. Russell still sails, goes on adventure hikes, boxes and plays touch and rugby. Russell lives in New Farm, Brisbane with his wife Donna and their sons. Russell has four children, two of whom are studying at Churchie.
