2 Blog... ROB s I hope you all had good break over the Christmas I did and enabled me to get the garden at least looking like somebody does live in the house. Well? I would like to thank Secretary Jo and Michael for a lovely evening barbecue last Monday evening. Sitting outside in their beautiful garden and being perfect hosts made it a great night. Thank you Jo and Michael. Also while I am thanking members I would like to thank Michael and Sally O Sullivan, Jo Cowling, Sue Bolton and with non members Michael Cowling, Craig Martin, John Gray and Clem for doing a wonderful job at the Convent over the Christmas period. We thank the non members who volunteered to help out the club when no-one could man the gate and we sincerely thank them for efforts as it certainly help our profile in the district. In case you didn t realise, the price has risen to $6 to park at the Convent. This will make a significant difference to our budget over the coming months and allow us to help more people, which is what every Rotarians loves. We have copped some flak over the price hike, but nothing we cannot handle. The second time I was sitting down watching TV when I saw a snake out on the Terrace but it disappeared under the living room. If I catch it I will pat it on the head and say naughty snake. Like hell, it will be boofed, crunched, smashed and flung over the fence. The only good snake is a dead one with its head looking like a deflated football and hanging on the fence. You betcha!! [sic] I urge everyone to come hear the guest speaker Marcus Godhinho on Monday night as I am trying to connect with other charities in the Richmond district. We will also give a warm welcome to our club on Monday of our new youth exchange student, Giulia Cardoso from Brazil. Have a good week and keep up the good work. President Rob
3 U Last Week s Meeting Scribe John Benger Janice Kesterton started the meeting by referring to the elderly John Benger. Obviously she will have to be disciplined!! A loud noise startled the meeting and Rob commented it made my hair stand on end. A very rude person who will remain nameless (but who hosted the BBQ last week) replied to Rob which one. Acting, acting Sergeant Mark Dwyer extracted fines. A self fine from the floor was Sue telling us that if the guacamole tasted different is was because she misread a label and it had ginger and not garlic as a key ingredient. Trevor announced the Lunar New Year with the advice it was the year of the golden dragon. Something that comes around every 72 years (Janice Kesterton s third one!!!). The golden dragon is the king of the dragons. (Honorary Chinese President Rob corrected Trevor to note in fact it s the Year of the Water Dragon a symbol of Power & Wealth ). Guest speaker, Peggy Cochrane, is one of 400 brightly dressed volunteers who act as ambassadors to visitors, and locals, needing information about what to do in Melbourne. They occupy prominent positions plus meet cruise ships and tour groups. Peggy said she was a street walker and hung around Young and Jacksons but then denied any illegal activities. But her knowledge of the history on many houses of ill-reputed makes you wonder? I learnt a new word. Bilking. That is where a man has his trousers off and the lady runs off with both his trousers and his money. Peggy noted that many Melbournians never see the many highlights of our city. Many are low cost or free. For example the State Library, penguins at St Kilda, the MCG Museum, China Town, Queen Vic Market Tour and all the activities at Federation Square. Even walking tours covering the history, and colourful personalities, of Melbourne s back lanes. Peggy commended the get on and get off bus a tram tours that visited key spots e.g. the Botanical Gardens. Peggy commented on the professionalism of her organisation including the initial training and weekly briefings on key events in Melbourne that week. There is little doubt that Peggy and her team mates have a significant impact on Melbourne being continually voted one of the friendliest cities. Our compliments and congratulations to Peggy and her group. For those wanting to explore Melbourne Peggy said the advice centre in Fed Square was brilliant. Tell them you requirement (e.g. a half day tour of historic sites or such) and they have a schedule. More information is available on HUwww.visitvictoria.com

6 Back to School Exercise Book Project The Back to School Specials specials usually feature cheap exercise books, the basic building block for education. This is the item most requested from Donations In Kind by Clubs for their overseas projects. For the past couple of years we have been distributing a wonderful donation of 750,000 books, but all good things come to an end and they are almost gone. With books available for a few cents (Big W packs of 3 for 10cents) it s a simple and affordable way for Members and their friends to support a student who needs our help. If you see a store running a Back to School promotion have a look around. There is a very good chance cheap books will be available and it never hurts to ask.
