I have never seen so darn many gorgeous planes, or cameras, for that matter Ahh, the July issue of the Dusters news is always one of my favorites insofar as there is so much to publish. Special thanks this month to Cliff Pemberton, Jeff Thoennes, Chris Christopher David Ling and Gary Leitzke for their timely submission of the pictures that made this issue possible. The Bigger Bird came off well, with perfect weather and field conditions. I was surprised to see the Sunday activity level so much lower than Saturdays however. I know I praise the field condition a lot, but it was in the most remarkable shape I have ever seen it over the Bigger Bird. Mr. Bale and Co. certainly know how to maintain a field. 2 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Meeting Notes The June club meeting of the Dusters RC Club was convened outside the Quonset hut at Duster field for the first time, in the year of our lord, This after a Burger dinner supplied by the Dusters deli crew. There were 23 members present There were no guests or new members present but a big Dusters welcome is extended to new member Roger Misterik. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The club treasurer was absent this evening, and rumors that he was enjoying a vacation in Fiji on the club treasury appear to be unfounded. Likewise, the safety Officer was also absent this evening, in spite of an accident/incident free month at Duster field. Field Marshall Bale has returned to normal after a month of health issues. Jim Robb has filled in admirably in his absence, and will do so again in July as Mr. Bale goes traveling. Bill reports the field in good shape and will be at its best later in the week. Speaking of such, Vice President Hoover did not attend the meeting, as he was home recuperating, with broken ribs a result of a slip and fall at the Plat I Float Fly. The issuance of No fly letters to delinquent members was discussed and will go out in July. A discussion ensued regarding the use of the frequency board by all flyers, including those on the Spread Spectrum band resulted in a stern reminder to all members: USE THE FREQUENCY BOARD! A set up Party for the bigger Bird will take place Thursday morning at 10:00 AM. It appears that we have enough volunteers to get the job done. Don built a new table for the Deli Crew that will stay on site. A sincere Dusters Thank You to Don for his unsolicited, yet welcome, effort. NEW BUSINESS IMAC at the Dusters in August is seeking volunteers to act as scribes in assisting the judges. I am told that our Safety Officer will buy lunch for volunteers with only a half day required. See Dan Lurvey. In the matter of the disposal of the old filed mower at Dusters Field, sealed bids (1) were opened, read and awarded. The winning bid, at $301.99, was submitted by Terry Criswell. The resolution of this matter also brought the meeting to procedures to a halt. The drawing was held and the meeting adjourned at 8 PM. The fence project, halfway completed, will be finished Thursday morning, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Ron Campbell and Gary Worthington. 3 Dusters Bigger Bird Event Woodburn Oregon Clear skies, warm temps, a slight breeze, good pilots and a well groomed field are the ingredients of any successful fly in. They were found in abundance June 26 and 27 in Woodburn Oregon, as the Dusters RC Club hosted its 7th annual Bigger Bird fly in. Nearly 40 pilots, with well over 60 aircraft, from throughout the Pacific Northwest participated in this low key, non competitive fly in. Flying activity, especially Saturday, was intense, with four planes in the sky most of the time, excellent flying skills on display and a steady line of pilots waiting to get airborne. Noteworthy moments include Jerry Holcomb s magnificent electric B 17 flown in an extremely scale like manner, Rob Rainwater s twin YS 1.40 powered P-38, Ron Campbell s giant, radial powered Waco, Chris Christopher s outstanding aerobatic routines, Don Steigman s incredibly detailed Spacewalker and Greg Tanous doing flybys with his realistic superheroes. Chris Eliot was voted Best Pilot of the Event and Rob Rainwater s P-38 was voted Best Plane of the Event. This was the 7 th consecutive Bigger Bird event held by the Dusters, and it has come to be recognized as one of the premier flying events in the Portland area.
