5 Librarian s Corner We have a couple of new DVDs to report on this month. The first is the 2011 Jet World Masters that took place at the Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio. This is a two disk set with almost three hours of video. The airplanes in this contest are primarily extremely detailed models of jet fighter/bomber type of aircraft of recent vintage. The disks feature 57 pilots from 14 countries including some eastern bloc countries. This is scale modeling and flying at its best. Every airplane has been prepared to the finest detail. The paint jobs on these planes cost more than all my airplanes put together. Some of them are really spectacular. The Russian entries are spectacularly gaudy and really get your attention. This video is mostly a look at the airplane kind of video. The flying scenes are rather boring since there is only one plane flying at a time and the pilot is following a very rigid schedule of extremely basic maneuvers. Still, the pilots are very skilled and the planes look very realistic in flight. There were no botched landings in this video. The bonus section departs from the genre of the feature section in that it shows larger, multi-engine airplanes. There is an interview of an owner/pilot of a swing wing B1 bomber powered by two jet engines. The landing gear was handmade by the owner and meant to duplicate the action of the full scale airplane. The interview included discussion of the flying characteristics of the plane and demonstrations of all the operating features, but there was no flying. I noticed that the airplane was a little beat up near the right wing root and I suppose that is why there is no flight footage. A second airplane in the bonus section is an SR-71. This includes some interesting flight scenes in which the plane looks very realistic. This pilot showed a little more imagination in the flying when he actually managed to roll his plane. For those of you who didn t make it to Top Gun this year, we have a new video of that event also.
