1 Issue 4386, February 2013 Next club meeting: February 25 th 2013, 7:00 pm, West Creek Café, Camp Bowie Blvd Presidents Corner: by Ken Knotts Flying season is almost upon us. We start this flying season with a huge bang when 75 SAE teams of college students from around the world converge on Thunderbird Field March Tom Blakeney and Oliver Alvarado are heading up the event. If this is your first time to see these young engineers in action, you will be surprised by the ingenuity, craftsmanship and enthusiasm of these college students. We are already prepping the field and there is still a lot to be done. Training for the SAE inspectors will be Saturday, March 2 at Spring Creek BBQ on Camp Bowie West at 1:00 PM. We still need inspectors so if you can help, please sign-up with Tom Blakeney. Flying starts on Saturday morning, March 16 for all 75 teams and ends Sunday around 1:00 PM. This is a big event for the Thunderbirds and will give us more national notoriety, especially when things work very well. Please help keep our field neat so it reflects the quality of the site and of Thunderbirds. Safe flying and make it look smooth. Ken Knotts President, Fort Worth Thunderbirds Vice Presidents Corner No report this month. 6 Safety Corner Thunderbird Safety This month s article will deal with something other than flying. The topic is transportation to and from the field or more accurately, driving safety. As many of you know I used to drive an 18 wheeler. What you don t know is that I accumulated approximately 1,140,000 miles without an accident. To put that in perspective, most people will not even drive 400,000 miles in their entire lifetime. Having a safe driving record takes effort and constant diligence (and a bit of luck doesn t hurt either). I would like to pass on a game that I used to help accomplished that. I call it What can go wrong now? Basically it s a guessing game where you try and guess what may happen next. Here s an example of the game. The road is clear, dry and it s nighttime; you keep a running dialog in your head like; Slight curve ahead, are there wild game on the side of the road, a pedestrian dressed in dark clothes that make it hard to see them, or maybe a car stopped without its lights on. No great; car coming from the other direction, is he drunk, will he swerve into my lane? Nope..great; Will the car that s passing you cut back into your lane too quickly? Will the car stopped at the next intersection suddenly pull out in front of you? You get the idea, basically expect the unexpected. You d be surprised at how many times you re right. The second item I d like to cover is making sure your load is secure. Don t want anything to happen to your aircraft during transportation. Just ask yourself; If I have to slam on the brakes, will it damage anything I m hauling? If the answer is possibly or yes; re-arrange things or secure them. Placing the heaviest items near the front of the cargo area will minimize the chance of it shifting during braking and sliding into other items. For airplanes, homemade wheel chocks will keep it from rolling. A little effort to prevent dents and dings in your prize bird is well worth it. Have fun and be safe Jimmy Newton Safety Officer THUNDERBIRD 2012 CALENDAR DATE EVENT POINT OF CONTACT March April April SAE Heli Event SPA (Senior Pattern) May 4 th Warbird Fly-in Terry Thorpe/Woody Lake May 18 th June 12 th July 20 th August 3 rd October October Q-25 Race (Rain Date June 1 st Old Farts Fly-in Boy Scout Training Summer Float Fly Sr. Pattern (SPA) IMAC Event Page 6
