1 JULY newview THE -----THIS EDITION----- FORTESCUE FESTIVAL FAST APPROACHING ANZAC DAY TRADITION A WALK TOGETHER - TRAVELS TO NEWMAN --- Kiripirna Park Comes Alive --- Thursday 7 June was a day for the community to celebrate, with the opening festivities for Kiripirna Park in the Newman town centre. Kiripirna has deep meaning for the Nyiyaparli traditional owners. It is a ceremonial (Thalu) and mythical place that is listed on Western Australia s Register of Aboriginal Sites. BHP Billiton Iron Ore, in partnership with the Shire of East Pilbara, Department of Indigenous Affairs and the Nyiyaparli people, redeveloped the area behind the Aquatic Centre, transforming the land into a community and family place that reflects its great cultural significance. Two large, free-standing stones that were removed during the town s development in the 1960s were known to be from Kiripirna. Taking pride of place in the new Park are two other stones selected by Nyiyaparli people, which have become the park s centrepiece. Seating surrounding the stones, paving and hardworks have been completed, and the finishing touches of landscaping make Kiripirna Park a wonderful asset. The opening celebration allowed Newman s community to explore the Park and enjoy some food, drinks and family-fun activities. Children also helped out by planting a tree and painting some vibrant, coloured stakes, so they feel that they own a part of the park. The official ceremonies saw dignitaries from the Shire of East Pilbara, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, the Department of Indigenous Affairs and the Nyiyaparli Elders speak about the importance of the park as a valued symbol of Indigenous culture to Newman s identity. The formalities finished with an unveiling of the stones. Kiripirna Park is sure to be a well-loved public open space that also denotes the importance of the town s Indigenous people and cultural history. Make sure you spend some time in this beautiful, peaceful addition to Newman s amenity. FILLING THE GAP WESTERN DESERT SPORT SUCCESS

2 --- Fabulous Facilities --- Shire of East Pilbara CEO, Allen Cooper, BHP Billiton Iron Ore s Emma-Jane Hunt and Kelly O Meara and some of Newman s budding sporting stars. New junior facilities have recently been developed at the Capricorn Sporting Complex. Some spectacular, pristine additions have been made to the complex including a Junior Sport Pavilion, clubroom, change rooms and storerooms. The four fields and ovals have also had a new lease of life, with three getting brand new lighting and lighting towers on Capricorn Oval receiving an upgrade. Finishing touches are also being put to four new car parks and a new playground. To coincide with the enhancement of the facilities, the Shire of East Pilbara has also officially named the ovals for ease of recognition. All of this is very exciting news for AFL juniors, seniors and veterans teams; junior soccer players will also benefit, as will teeball, cricket and oz tag players. Contributions have come from the Royalties for Regions Town Centre revitalisation fund that has also been boosted by a Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities grant and funds from the Shire of East Pilbara. BHP Billiton Iron Ore also contributed funds to the facilities upgrade and lighting which extends to Boomerang Oval. The facilities have been in use for the past two months but an official opening is planned with the hope that the Hon Brendon Grylls MLA, Minister for Regional Development and with responsibility for delivering the Royalties for Regions funding, will be able to officiate the opening. --- Fortescue Festival Fast Approaching --- The annual Fortescue Festival which is to be held on 19 August, has been a part of Newman for close to 30 years. This fantastic event draws in people from across the Shire of East Pilbara and gives the Shire s population an opportunity to come together as one community. The Newman Lions Club has been the driving force behind the festival each year since its inception, organising and running the events. They are assisted each year by other volunteers from the community, including stall holders, and also receive generous support from BHP Billiton Iron Ore (through their Community Grants), local businesses and the Shire. Lions members are all volunteers and we don t get anything back apart from the enjoyment of giving people a great day, Newman Lions Club President, Stewart Willetts, explained. While the festival itself is held on the Sunday, the event is famous for its weekend-long series of celebrations. Horse races were traditionally held on Friday and the Festival Ball where Newman s residents dressed up, danced to the live bands and let their hair down - on Friday night. Drag races were held on Saturday morning initially on Welsh Drive, later at the airport and Speedway racing on Saturday night. The Festival family fun day has always been held on the Sunday, with the Newman Cup held on the Monday following the long weekend of festivities. While the town centre drag races may have disappeared, this year s festival is shaping up to be another fantastic weekend of events. The Festival Ball will again be held on the Friday night, Speedway races will be celebrating their 40th anniversary, and the Sunday festival day looks to be even bigger than previous years with camel rides, Noddy train, animals from the Lions Animal Farm, and paintball, as well as the usual bumper cars and sideshow alleys. Newman s much-loved Fortescue Festival with its bumper cars, rides and stalls. Further details about the event will be published in coming months.

3 NEWMAN S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER --- Anzac Day Traditions --- Current members of the Pilbara Regiment with veterans at this year s ANZAC Day commemorations. ANZAC Day is always full of tradition and meaning for Newman residents. This year was no exception. The commemorations started at sunrise with a street parade of the Pilbara Regiment, RSL members, representatives from the police, other emergency services, and the community in tow. The parade concluded at the Shire building with a moving service and laying of wreaths and other floral tributes from all sectors of the population. The official proceedings were followed by a Gunfire Breakfast traditionally the meal troops ate before a battle sponsored by the Returned Services League. Following this community members gathered together at the Army Base to enjoy traditional games of two-up and some live music. Today there are around 20 veterans in Newman who have served in Vietnam, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pilbara Regiment is also still hard at work in the Shire of East Pilbara, with the Newmanbased A Troop conducting Regional Surveillance and Reconnaissance and working in conjunction with government agencies such as Customs and Border Protection, the Department of Environment and Conservation and the Western Australia Police Force. Members of A Troop give up their spare time to patrol the harsh Pilbara Landscape in 4WD vehicles or on water in the F470 Zodiacs to help secure Australia s national interests. Our work would not be achievable without the support of BHP Billiton Iron Ore. Their staff are given leave to attend courses and go out on patrols; we just couldn t do it without them. A Troop s Warrant Officer Michael Keefe said. --- A Walk Together - Travels to Newman --- The exhibition under the trees - photo courtesy of Tobias Titz. In May and June, the Marnti warajanga - A Walk Together exhibition from the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD), in association with Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre and photographer Tobias Titz, was reshaped into a major travelling project visiting five Pilbara communities. The originals are still in Canberra but 45 portraits that were taken with a Polaroid large-format camera were especially reproduced onto skins stretched onto lightweight poles for the purposes of this mobile display. Accompanying these portraits of Indigenous and non- Indigenous people who have worked closely together in the Pilbara, are statements from them about key moments in history that have been developed into themes for the exhibition. Project Coordinator, Wendy Wood, spoke about the importance of the exhibition to the Pilbara s communities. I was reminding myself constantly just how amazing it was to be a part of this unique, worthy and unprecedented project, she said. BHP Billiton Iron Ore provided vital support to take the roadshow from Perth to South Hedland, Warralong, Yandeyarra, Jigalong and Newman. The redeveloped Marnti warajanga travelling exhibition included photography workshops and community celebration events that marked significant periods in history. At the exhibition s end, the trailer and its contents were donated to the Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre in South Hedland. 4 newview THE APRIL Filling The Gap! --- Newman now has its own dentist with the arrival of Dr. Harry Craven s mobile clinic. In the months that Newman s community has been without a dentist, residents have had to drive to Tom Price, two hours away, or even fly to Perth. However, the situation has now changed with the news that Harry Craven from South Australia has taken up a position in town as a mobile dentist. Harry had expressed his interest to the WA Dental Board to travel interstate and work in faraway regions, and the wheels were set in motion. At a recent Health Advisory Group Meeting chaired by Shire President, Lynne Craigie, she invited him to present his proposal and the rest, as they say, is history! Harry s motor home will be positioned on the land on Leslie Tutt Drive and Harry will have his private living quarters at the front of the vehicle while the dental clinic will be at the back half of the vehicle. Harry s brother is also a dentist and they eventually intend to both work in Western Australia and South Australia, looking after patients in remote mining towns and other rural communities. For appointments or more information contact Dr. Harry Craven on Martu students Ngurra away from home. --- Ngurra, Home for Martu Education --- Funded by BHP Billiton Iron Ore and managed by the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation, the Martu Education Centre (MEC) is an after-school facility set up in 2010 to improve attendance and literacy in Martu students. In a moving gesture, students have recently named the Centre Ngurra, the Martu word for home, and BHP Billiton Iron Ore are providing a new logo and sign to help announce the new identity to the community. Newman s new dentist, Harry Craven, proudly showing off his mobile surgery. NEWVIEW FACT In 2001, the Newman- Port Hedland rail line hosted the world s longest train at 7.353km in length. Approximately 60 students attend the Centre each term between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Some are from Newman s primary schools and others come from the indigenous communities of Punmu, Pangurr (Cotton Creek) and Jigalong. Ten tutors, under the leadership of ESL Teacher and Project Manager, Rebecca Holden, engage the children in reading, writing, listening and speaking programs. A bus collects the youngsters from their schools or communities and drops them at the centre, where they are also given afternoon tea and an evening meal. Ngurra is housed in a three-bedroom cottage donated and proudly supported by BHP Billiton Iron Ore. The Centre has also been the recipient of a community grant from the company, which is being used to develop the outdoor area. We are making a garden, reticulation has been installed and there will be six or eight raised beds for growing vegetables. We also have a chook pen coming and we want to encourage our students to learn about animal care, economic independence and sustainability. Eventually it would be nice to be able to take it a step further and grow produce that we can sell at the market so they have a sense of ownership, Rebecca said. 5 NEWMAN S COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER --- Western Desert Sport Success --- Alex Seed and Adrian Brahmin from BHP Billiton Iron Ore s Community and Indigenous Affairs team with some of the happy onlookers at the Western Desert Sports Carnival. The Western Desert Sport League kicked off again with the Nullagine Smarter Than Smoking carnival held in April, the first of three rounds of this year s League. The League started in 2010 with participation from the communities/ towns of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Warralong, Nullagine, Marble Bar, Punmu, Kunawarritji and Kiwirrkurra - an area greater than the State of Victoria! On average, about 540 people attend each carnival - around 240 players and 300 spectators. Softball and football make up the senior women s and men s competitions, and children participate in recreational sport and athletics. The League emerged out of discussions held in 2009 between Newcrest Mining, Department of Sport and Recreation and a Martu Sports Committee to see how best to support sport and recreation in the Western Desert. The result is a multi-level approach to increase participation in physical activity at a community, inter-community and regional levels to improve health and wellbeing, and possibly provide pathways into elite sport. Members of BHP Billiton Iron Ore s Community and Indigenous Affairs team attended the most recent event, and donated a marquee painted by Martumilli artists to the Nullagine School. Kiwirrkurra, in the Gibson Desert, is the destination for the next Carnival and the final round in will be at Jigalong. --- Vision for the East Pilbara --- The Picture your East Pilbara project has received over 100 responses from residents giving their input to help shape the direction of the Shire of East Pilbara over the next 10 years. The visioning project has come about as part of local government reform and the development of a Strategic Community Plan for the Shire. It is a key community consultation process, designed to allow the residents of the Shire to have a say in how they see the future of their towns and region. Residents of the Shire were asked to spend 10 minutes completing a short questionnaire regarding the needs of the Newman, Nullagine and Marble Bar communities. They were also asked to imagine the East Pilbara in 2020 and identify key features of their vision. Drop boxes were set-up in strategically selected locations around the three communities and a postcard questionnaire was delivered to every residential home in each town. The standout findings so far were a desire to continue to see more affordable housing availability; more shopping outlets; How did you tell the Shire of East Pilbara how your saw the Newman of the future? and better health facilities. These are currently high priority concerns that local and state government are seeking to address. The results, strategies, ideas and comments generated through the answers will help to create a community plan that will provide a clear direction for Newman, Marble Bar and Nullagine for the next 10 years, said Shire of East Pilbara Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper. We know our community is passionate about the East Pilbara and its future and their viewpoints will help us create the best possible community plan for the future. In coming months the Shire will publish the result of the survey. WHERE DO YOU READ NEWVIEW? This newsletter is designed by Creating Communities Pty Ltd. ---Upcoming Events Working with the Community --- Originally from England, Gary Prior made his way to the Pilbara to study in In his 28 years in Newman he has quietly and sometimes not so quietly - contributed to making Newman the vibrant community that it is! The town was called Mount Newman when Gary arrived, and Gary s first job with a catering company. It was one of the best 10 months of my life! Gary said. Gary s initial impressions of Newman and the Pilbara obviously impressed him and he decided to stay, soon joining BHP Billiton Iron Ore, working in the warehouse on the sampling side before transferring to Quality Control in Gary s involvement in the Newman Lions Club began twenty years ago when the local doctor persuaded him to join. The numbers were down and it was the start of me getting involved, Gary said. Since that fateful visit to the doctor, Gary has fitted his Lions Club activities in with his time off. One of the activities that he has been very active in organising is the Fortescue Festival, a highlight of the town s social calendar, that is held on the third weekend every August. It s a special long weekend in Newman only and we give up another public holiday to get this one, he said. Gary is always a familiar face at the barbecues the Newman Lions Club runs at a number of different events throughout the year. He also supports the Lions Club s animal farm housed in the park behind the caravan park, near the group s clubhouse. Newman is a nice place to live. It s like an oasis in the middle of nowhere, Gary concluded. --- BHP Billiton Iron Ore s Community Grants Program --- August Funding Round 2012 BHP Billiton Iron Ore invites you to apply for funding through its exciting Community Grants Program.
