1 THE FUTURE OF IN- FLIGHT CONNECTIVITY Introducing the 2016 edition of The Futureof In-Flight Connectivity. Some key questions answered by this report include: Which airlines currently provide in-flight connectivity (IFC)? What factors must airlines consider when investing in IFC? How quicklywill connected aircraft grow over the next ten years? How do installations break down between line fitments and retrofits? How does the number of connected aircraft varyby geographicregion? What is the number of narrow-body, wide-body and regional jets with IFC? How will ATG, L-band, Ku-band, Ka-band and Hybrid connections grow? How are existing ATG systems evolving and where will alternatives emerge? Which new satellite launches are key and why? How is key enabling hardware (such as antennas) evolving? What are relevant technology trends? What are the key drivers and inhibitors of market growth? What is the business case for IFC? (costs, cost savings, revenues) How are airlines using connectivity to improve internal operations? What is the size of the market for key in-flight connectivity hardware? What are the market shares and strategies of key players? >25 interviews 216 pages 6 chapters 98 tables The most comprehensive analysis of the of the in-flight connectivity market ever undertaken. 39 charts
2 OVERVIEW Nearly one in three commercial passenger aircraft will have in-flight connectivity installed and activated by the end of this year. The United States once a market considered more or less sewn up has been reinvigorated with carriers showing a desire to investigate solutions on offer from alternative suppliers. In other regions of the world, adoption of in-flight connectivity is finally gathering pace and penetration will soon reach double figures in Western Europe and Asia- Pacific. The entry into service of the European Aviation Network and the decision to grant an extension to trial licenses in the key Chinese market will further boost numbers in these markets. Even though many airlines have now made a decision on their IFC strategy, there still exists a great deal of uncertainty in the industry especially with regards to the pros and cons of different solutions, new satellite capacity and the improvements being made to key enabling hardware such as antennas, wireless access points, servers and routers. Additionally, the increased focus on connectivity beyond the cabin and its huge potential for improving business operations is giving airlines something else to think about. Most service providers are establishing themselves as providers of connected aircraft solutions, rather than passenger IFC in isolation. The 2016 edition of The Future of In-Flight Connectivity provides companies interested in this market with detailed information on its present status and likely future development.
