FlightGlobal, incorporating FlightStats, On-time Performance Service Awards: A Long-time Partner Recognizing Industry Success ON-TIME PERFORMANCE 2018 WINNER SERVICE AWARDS As a leader in aviation and air travel data insights, we are uniquely positioned to provide an in-depth view of how airlines are performing globally. For years, the travel industry has looked to us as the trusted arbiter to deliver the most accurate and complete flight status information. We process about 15 million updates per day, which is almost 18 times more than the industry average. For the past 10 years, the On-time Performance Service (OPS) Awards have been incredibly competitive and only acknowledge the best of the best performers in the world. As we continue to make strides in improving our data quality, we expect to evolve the program and increase standards and criteria in the future. Any finalist should be proud of their performance as it is a significant achievement Our experience in the industry has taught us how challenging it is for an airline to achieve high on-time performance and how important it is for a traveler to select an airline they can trust. With this in mind, we designed the OPS Awards to recognize the hard work of those airlines that demonstrate consistently high performance and deliver on their promise to transport passengers to their destinations on time. Definition of on-time performance A flight is on-time if the aircraft arrives at the gate less than 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. LESS THAN 15:00 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

Where we get our data The best way to ensure data is accurate is to check it against other sources. Collecting real-time flight status data from multiple sources allows us to provide more timely, complete, and accurate information. We re able to detect and correct errors or omissions quickly because we verify information against other sources. To determine the finalists and winners of the OPS Awards, we examine our flight status and arrival data curated from over 600 global sources, including published schedules, government agencies, civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, and major airline reservation systems. Priority is given to the most reliable and timely sources usually direct airline data feeds. Our team implements corroborative analysis to grade and prioritize sources. We configure our in-house tools to curate data based on using the most reliable sources in each situation. Why trust these rankings Our mission is to maintain data integrity throughout the collection process, harmonizing the data as much as possible to achieve a single source of truth. Data can only be regarded as high quality if it achieves what is called quality balance. Quality balance means obtaining the highest possible levels of accuracy, timeliness and coverage given the limitations of the air travel industry and the information available. We examine our flight status and arrival data curated from over 600 global sources. We gather information from more than 120,000 operated flights per day. We have a dedicated team whose job it is to turn data into useful, trusted information by cleansing it in real-time. We ve been doing it for years, so we know the best practices for collecting and verifying data. Our data processing team has logic, processes and protections in place to corroborate the information we gather from more than 120,000 operated flights per day. Sophisticated tools and statistics are employed to confirm information, throw out outliers and employ multi-source verification to fill in gaps in data that might be provided by a single source. When there are conflicting updates, we apply advanced algorithms to identify the most reasonable data points, using data processing engines to help us cross-check information and help us understand whether something is logically consistent or if we need to confirm its accuracy. Additionally, each of our team members obtains a level of industry understanding to be able to effectively weigh the validity of a data point or the trustworthiness of a source. Our information is very in-depth and we have a strict definition around what we consider to be a covered flight in our database. For example, a covered flight should include data fields such as estimated departure, actual departure, departure dates and arrival gates. Constantly watching and sampling data from a flight helps ensure we re one of the first to know when changes occur and we re able to notice a deviation in our data faster. In the end, we process about 15 million updates per day, which is almost 18 times more than the industry average. We process about 15 million updates per day, which is almost 18 times more than the industry average.

Airline Selection Criteria Airlines are selected based on a combination of factors, including: Scheduled Flights. A minimum threshold of the total number of scheduled flights is used in each category. Geography. An airlines home country was used to determine the geography of the carrier. Tracking. To be included in a given category an airline must meet our minimum tracking coverage threshold. Typically, tracking coverage is much higher than this threshold. To ensure complete transparency, we have included the tracking coverage for each airline. Capacity and Route Network. A combination of estimated seat capacity of all scheduled flights and the extent of an airline's route network were used as factors in classifying an airline as a global, major, or regional airline. Assigning tracking coverage thresholds to award categorizations requires careful consideration of the nature of airline operations and underlying statistical performance. Categorization enables airlines to be optimally compared with their peers based on their size, seat capacity and breadth of their networks. We combine our internal knowledge of the industry, our data capabilities and statistical approach to set these thresholds at 90%. In 2017, 120 airlines met the 90% tracking threshold. 120 airlines met the 90% tracking threshold in 2017.

Category Criteria Our categories for OPS Awards are grouped into 3 areas: Global, Major (by region), and Low Cost Carriers. An award is given for network and mainline operations in each category. For the Global Airlines category, we apply a more stringent threshold than in any other category because this group should reflect the top performers worldwide. As a result, we consider the top 25% of all airlines by size i.e. an airline must fall in the top 25% airlines by number of flights and seats and these airlines must serve a minimum of three or more regions. Thresholds are expected to be 132,000 network / 117,000 mainline scheduled flights and 22 million network / 20 million mainline seats. For Major Airlines by Region, we consider the top 50% of airlines that operate in the region. Major airlines in each region must fall in the top 50% for flights, seats, and destinations to be considered. Due to the variability of airline operations in different regions, the criteria differ considerably between regions. We review airlines in the following regions, with airline selection requirements as of 2017: Asia-Pacific Minimum Scheduled Flights: (Network: 51,000/ Mainline: 53,000) Minimum Seat Capacity: (Network: 9 Million/ Mainline: 9 Million) Minimum Destinations: (Network: 40/ Mainline: 36) Europe Minimum Scheduled Flights: (Network: 48,000 / Mainline: 40,000) Minimum Seat Capacity: (Network: 7 Million / Mainline: 6 Million) Minimum Destinations: (Network: 68 / Mainline: 68) Latin America Minimum Scheduled Flights: (Network: 103,000 / Mainline: 70,000) Minimum Seat Capacity: (Network: 16 Million / Mainline: 12 Million) Minimum Destinations: (Network: 45 / Mainline: 55) Middle East & Africa Minimum Scheduled Flights: (Network: 76,000 / Mainline: 58,000) Minimum Seat Capacity: (Network: 12 Million / Mainline: 10 Million) Minimum Destinations: (Network: 76 / Mainline: 69) North America Minimum Scheduled Flights: (Network: 72,000 / Mainline: 66,000) Minimum Seat Capacity: (Network: 4 Million / Mainline: 3 Million) Minimum Destinations: (Network: 84 / Mainline: 82) *Please note that the thresholds above are based on airline operations for the year of Given the variability of the travel industry we expect slight differences in the thresholds for the 2018 awards when we announce the winners and finalists in January The Low Cost Carrier (LCC) category reviews airlines that are industry recognized and/or self-identified low cost carriers. For this category, we consider the top 90% of LCC airlines. LCC airlines must fall in the top 90% for flights, seats, and destinations to be considered. Minimum thresholds for LCC airlines are 25 thousand flights, 4 million seats and 20 destinations served.

Why we name winners in mainline and network We split each category into mainline and network to improve the accuracy of the awards based on our industry knowledge that is often challenging for airlines to maintain top-tier on-time performance across all their codeshare relationships. Network is defined as a system of flights that flown by a major airline and include the flights that are marketed by the airline but are operated by a separate airline partner. Most big, full-service airlines have these types of regional partnerships where as many as 8-10 carriers operate flights on their behalf. Many airlines want to be recognized only by their own operational performance, not the performance of their regional airline partners. In many cases, the winner is the same for both categories; however, in some cases, they could be different. Many airlines want to be recognized only by their own operational performance, not the performance of their regional airline partners. Stay tuned for the 2018 On-time Performance Service Awards The results of the OPS Awards are published each year in early January. In addition to naming the winners and finalists in each category, we also provide a complementary interactive analysis report that allows anyone to take a deeper dive into the performance of the airlines we considered. In the tool, you can compare airlines by geographic region, global carriers, major carriers, and other performance metrics. If you have questions about the OPS Awards, please contact us to learn more about the program and how you can ensure your airline in considered for this industry honor. Make Sure Your Airline is Considered for the OPS Awards! us to ensure we have your airline s data feed at helpdesk@flightglobal.com.

Terms Glossary The below terms appear in our annual OPS awards analysis report and our monthly on-time performance report on FlightStats.com. Airline Code - The IATA or ICAO code for the airline.
