3 AIRPORT SHOW AND THE HIGHLY LUCRATIVE AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT MARKET IN THE REGION With two-thirds of the world s population within just eight hours flying distance and an estimated 400 million passengers passing through the regional airports by 2020; GCC states are undertaking massive aviation development programmes, specifically in airport infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience, to gear up as the world s foremost travel hub. GCC airports are investing over US$100 billion towards acquiring cutting-edge technologies and to ensure seamless and safer passenger and freight movement. This shift in trend from focusing on building bigger airports to enhancing passenger experience is generating business opportunities for local, regional and global companies to grab their share of this ever changing and challenging market. THE MARKET: The Middle East region is expected to handle 400 million air passengers by 2020, with the GCC s share being 250 million, including about 98 million for Dubai s two airports. GCC airports are particularly making their mark as they upgrade facilities, operations and services to enjoy a greater share of the growing market. GCC Airport Projects at a Glance KUWAIT BAHRAIN SAUDI ARABIA QATAR UAE OMAN Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is aiming to boost its capacity as part of its expansion plans over the next four years. Once complete in 2015, the expansion will see the airport's capacity from the current 9 million passengers a year to 13.5 million. New Doha International Airport, when finally developed in 2015, will handle 50 million passengers, 2 million tons of cargo and 320,000 aircraft landings and take-offs each year. The US$15.5 billion project will serve as the new home for Qatar Airways, one of the world s fastest growing airlines. Kuwait International Airport is planning to increase the capacity of travelers coming in and out of the airport to 13 million initially, and expand further at a later phase to 50 million passengers. At present, the airport has a capacity of 5.69 million passengers per year. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) plans to expand and build around 28 airports in the coming 20 years. Plans are underway by GACA to spend between US$10 billion and US$15 billion on building, developing and upgrading airports by 2020, in cooperation with private investors. The expansion of Muscat International Airport (MIA) is a two-year contract, beginning January 2013, worth US$108.5 million. Oman is also extending Salalah Airport in the south and building new airports in Sohar, Ras Al Hadd and Duqm.
