2 Tour 435 Squadron, February 18, 2016 Ben Toenders has confirmed that Thursday 18 Feb is available for a tour of 435 Sqn. CFB Winnipeg We will have a static display of a CC-130 Hercules and a briefing from the SAR Tech section on the equipment that the SAR Techs have available to them for performing a rescue from the Hercules. The tour will run from 7 to 9pm. IMPORTANT: Ben will need a list of all personnel participating in the tour by Monday 15 Feb. This list must be submitted 48 hours prior to the visit. All persons should meet inside the west door of Hangar 16 just prior to 7pm. You should enter the base from the gate off of Whytewold Rd. Your ID will be checked at the gate and then you should proceed to the parking lot across from Hangar 16. After passing the gate turn left immediately onto West St. Go about a block and turn right onto 6 Ave for a block and then turn left onto East St. You will then see 16 Hangar on your right. As you get to about the middle of the hangar turn left into the parking lot across from the hangar. Once parked enter the hangar at the main central door on the west side of the Hangar. All persons intending to come please me your names by Monday 15 Feb or you will not be allowed to enter the base. My is btoenders@shaw.ca. If you are not sure if you will attend send me your name anyway as it is easier for you to not show up than for me to try to add a name to the access list less than 48 hrs prior to the visit. New RAA Final Assembly Hangar Manager Thanks to Ben Toenders for serving as the RAA s hangar manager since the Final Assembly hangar opened almost 10 years ago. Randy Penner has agreed to take over the responsibilities of the hangar manager and he can be reached at if you are interested in renting the facility. Heated Hangar space $200 for small aircraft ($150 for summer months). Long-Term and Short-Term Rentals welcome. Space is available now. Congratulations Bert Elam The Recreational Aircraft Association joins the flying community in congratulating Bert Elam for winning the prestigious Air Canada "AWARD of EXCELLENCE"! Bert s career with Air Canada began 37 years ago and includes instructing on the DC9, Line Indoctrination Instructor, AC Pilots Assoc. Rep. and especially volunteering with "Dreams Takes Flight", where AC and many employees send Sick Children to Disney World. Bert has flown many of Air Canada s planes including his current position as Captain on the 777! Page 2 of 6
3 Bert s personal commitment to the success of every member of the team over 37 years of flying was applauded at the award ceremony. His dedication and Professionalism through the years has been notable and his work has helped many, many people. Bert has also been a tremendous asset to the Recreational Aircraft Association in various capacities, from Flying into Lyncrest Airport as Santa, serving as Chief Pilot for the RAA Club Plane C-GNUC, serving on the Club Plane Management Committee where he promotes C-FLUG and C-GNUC, flying or mentoring Marshallers in COPA for Kids, 99s Women Fly, and EAA Young Eagle events, and serving on the Executive of RAA and SFC. Bert is building a Pietenpol and a Bearhawk when he s not helping others with tools, materials, and information. Bert is a Compassionate, Caring and Generous individual. Congratulations Bert from SFC, RAA, COPA and EAA! Photo credit RAA members Peter Moodie, Larry Brown, Donna Prowse, John Stiver, Bert Elam (centre), Gerry Norberg, Mike Elam, Jill Oakes and Rick Riewe were at the award ceremony, catching Bert totally by surprise! Photo credit Peter Moodie. Hoarding is good. When I left the paper mill in the mid 90 s, I took a souvenir with me. It was a piece of extruded structural aluminum tube, 6 x 6 square with 3/8 thick walls and just over 9 long. I rescued it from the recycling bin and kept it with me knowing that one day it would be good for something. In the last 20 years it served as a paperweight, square guide, bookend, jack stand, and pumpkin holder. It was most recently cut into nearly equal thirds and is the main structural element in a trio of aircraft skis. The "design" is centred on a 6x6 x 9 inch long price of structural aluminum. Some other pieces I have on hand and some purchased. I am doing calculations as I go, as I add or subtract each piece. The goal is strength and not so much weight. In the fall of 2014, two pieces of UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) were purchased to form the bottom of the ski design no matter what design was eventually built. With the nice weather, and lack of any substantial snow on the ground during the entire winter of 2014/15, this was no reason to build skis. The summer and fall of 2015 had many days of great flying weather and splashing in the water, so building skis was not top on my mind. Then December brought a good dump of snow, shorter days, miserably humid and cloudy weather. It was finally time to design some skis. Page 3 of 6
4 At first, I thought I would just copy a popular design around Lyncrest. These were straight skis with a simple, light and strong box design. A different option was a wheel penetrating design from a Wisconsin 701 builder. I obtained some detailed plans for the fixed wheel-penetrating design which would allow snow and asphalt landings. However, a couple of stories of taxiing in not-thatsoft snow at near full power turned me back to straight skis. The paper mill aluminum tube was corralling various hammers and long files on the workbench when I finally found a permanent use for it; it would be the pedestal for the skis. The 9 long piece was cut into 3 long pieces for each of the main and nose skis. It was gusseted to two beams that formed the main structure of each ski. A small length of heavy angle iron was cut into 6 pieces and made up the welded assembly that became the hub and attached the ski to the axle. The advantage of the beam and gusseted pedestal was the ease of construction and calculations of acceptable loads. The disadvantage was the weight and time penalty. There were already several examples of an existing, proven, lightweight, easy to construct set of skis on several local Zenith 701 s and Land-Africa s. However, none of them incorporated a rescued piece of extruded structural aluminum from a paper mill. Page 4 of 6
5 After all was weight and balance, the net gain was 48 pounds with the CofG very close to the original. The skis being boxy, ugly, and utilitarian, match up perfectly to the rest of the boxy, ugly and utilitarian airplane. Thanks to everyone that helped out, and especially to the gentleman that pointed out a simple way to cut the bolt count by 80% in the rigging. Martin Bima Zenith 701 FrankenSTOLManitoba Airshow Groups Photo Ops Jill is looking for help to get the word out to as many women aviators (pilots, ATC, AME, students, dispatchers etc.) and as many Air Cadets as possible: 1, at least 99 women pilots and pilots in training are meeting June 4th in front of Snowbird 10 at the MB Airshow at 11:55 for the Photo shoot at NOON. 2. at least 450 air cadets are meeting by the glider and tow plane on June 4th at 3:50 pm for photo shoot at 4 pm!
