1 SPECIAL SNORIDERS SSA REPORT NEW SIGNAGE AVAILABLE SNOWARAMA IS VERY DEAR TO THIS SNOWMOBILER S HEART BY BARRY BRADSHAW, Chairman I m going to start with the two new signs that will be seen on the Saskatchewan snowmobile trails this winter. These new signs were discussed with the clubs at workshops in November and December. The first sign is Use Trail At Your Own Risk. This sign came about from a pending court case and, in doing some intensive checking into the provincial Snowmobile Act and in consulting with our lawyer, we found we already had a clause in the act that pertained to putting more onus on the snowmobiler. This sign was approved in principle by the snowmobile clubs at our AGM last June and the signs will be shipped out to all grooming clubs in the province. The sign is 12 x 18" and every grooming club will receive as many as needed to install at all the junctions where the You Are Here maps are installed. Also, I just got good news that there was enough money left in the budget to have 12 x 12" signs for all warm-up shacks. The second sign is Quiet In - Quiet Out. This sign is being produced for the clubs that have complained about loud sleds with aftermarket pipes coming in and out of their communities (maybe also some of the locals that should know better). The clubs can now order these signs at their own discretion and install them where they see fit coming in, going through and going out of communities. These signs sell for $5.50 each (plus tax) and can be ordered from our new sign supplier, Canadian Trail Markers (CTM), in Shelburne, Ontario. Their signage is listed on our SSA website (sasksnow.com). The first page lists all the main signage to be used throughout Saskatchewan on our snowmobile trails. CTM is also known as McCarthy Signs Marg McCarthy has been involved and a supporter of snowmobiling in Canada for many years. I first met her in 1998 when she was one of the riders in the Rendezvous 98 ride across Canada. She was in the sign business then and still is, and always wanted to sell us our trail signs. Now she can, since Mancor is no longer in the sign-making business. We ordered a few from her last season and the service was good, the shipping fast, they were excellent quality and the prices were much the same as Mancor. Next I want to focus on something that is very dear to my heart Snowarama for Easter Seals. I ve told this story many times before and it might be getting a little repetitious for some people but, anyway, here I go again. This will be the 38th year for the event in Yorkton and I am very proud to say that I have been involved for all of those years. Snowarama started out in Ontario as a fundraiser for disabled children in the 1970s, known then as Timmy s Snowarama for Easter Seals. An oldtime wrestler, Whipper Billy Watson, was the promoter/ambassador for the event. Watson came out west in 1976 to promote Timmy s Snowarama and to meet with snowmobile and service clubs to see who might be interested in hosting the event. I remember very well our Yorkton snowmobile club, a couple of service clubs, CJGX Radio, and in those days before cellphones, a couple of CB radio clubs attending the meeting with Cont d. on pg. 38 sidebar >> EVENTS Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week January 18-26, 2014 Snowarama February 8, 2014 Sask. 2 Fantastic feedback PLANNING HAS ALREADY STARTED FOR NEXT YEAR S SHOW BY CHRIS BREWER, President/CEO The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Show held November 1 to 3, 2013, at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, was a huge success! The exhibitors were happy with the attendance, the public enjoyed the content and the weather co-operated. We have already started on next year s show, selling booth space, and we hope to make it even better. Thanks to our fantastic exhibitors and to everyone who attended. We have had feedback from around the province that the show generated excitement for snowmobiling. If you weren t able to purchase your 4-Sled raffle tickets at the show, they are now available Winter has once again come to the Lakeland area. Ten feet of wet, heavy snow fell on November 3. For some it was only inconvenient, but for snowmobilers it was the start of riding. It does present problems, though, as none of the lakes are yet frozen. We will need a few weeks of very cold temperatures and no more snow before there will be enough ice for safe riding (or grooming) on the lakes. Lakeland encompasses the area north of Prince Albert to Waskesiu, east to Candle Lake and west to north of Shellbook. Our club is active with regular meetings the third Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the curling rink. Most start with a potluck supper at 6:30 and continue with a social evening. Anyone is welcome to attend. Our club is trying something new this year. We will be hosting a vintage snowmobile race on from the clubs or by calling the SSA office. The proceeds from the raffle support the clubs, safety programs and snowmobile trails. On a final note, please remember that if you were born on or after January 1, 1989, you are required to have your snowmobile safety certificate. To obtain your safety certificate, you can take the online safety course for $45 or attend the classroom course for $75. For more information, please visit Let s all have a safe and happy snowmobile season; remember to ride smart, ride safe and ride sober. Please don t drink and ride. Lakeland Snowmobile Club BY MARG CLAIR Have we got snow! The first blast of winter arrived on November 3 and 4 and we have more snow now than what we get some years in total. We definitely have a good start to another great snowmobile season with another storm happening as I write this article. Our club displayed a booth at the Saskatoon snowmobile show this year what an awesome show! With over 15,000 people attending, there was everything a snowmobiler would ever want. Our club promoted our local businesses that are March 8 and 9; it is certain to be an exciting event. More information will be posted as it is available on our club page at com. There will also be a poker rally on February 1, 2014, starting in Christopher Lake. Members will also be part of the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles ride again this year as it starts from Prince Albert on January 31. We will be working closely with Tracy Desjardins, co-ordinator of the Waskesiu Wilderness Area in the promotion of our area. Welcome to the area, Tracy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our many corporate sponsors for this year. We sincerely appreciate your support of our club and the work we do to keep the trails and shelters in good condition. We wish all snowmobilers a fantastic season and ride safely. Big River Timber Trails Sno Riders BY BARRY NONTELL so important to the snowmobile industry. It was a great opportunity to promote the many miles of groomed snowmobile trails that we have to offer. Big River s groomed trails are mainly in heavily forested areas, with many areas to ride off-trail on old logging roads and waist-deep, snow-filled meadows and lakes. There was a lot of interest in our three shelters, which are insulated and equipped with solar lights, wood stoves and wood, tables, decks of cards, even a crib Continued on page 39 >> CLUB CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE Continued from page 37 him. And what a promoter he was! So our local Yorkton snowmobile club, with the help of CJGX Radio and our local CB clubs the Canadian Diesel Gypsies and the Yellowhead CB Club took on the task of organizing our first Timmy s Snowarama in Yorkton on March 5, I was on the committee to find a suitable trail; in those days there were no snowmobile trails as we know them today. One of our snowmobile club supporters had a son in Roblin, Manitoba, who owned and operated a gourmet pizza restaurant there. So that is where we decided to go for lunch. Basically, we were trying to make a trail to Roblin and back. In those days the obvious route was to follow the highway ditch for any destination that you wanted to ride to. There were a couple of reasons for ditch riding. The first is that it was easy to know where you were headed using highway signs all you had to mark was any hazard in the ditch with red flags. The other reason was that the ditches always had good snow. So that s what we proceeded to do, leaving from the newly opened Parkland Mall in Yorkton. It was down the right-hand side of Highway 10 to Roblin for lunch and back to Yorkton on the other side of the ditch (we did have seven checkpoints along the way to keep track of the riders). That first year 60 riders raised just under $10,000 for the Saskatchewan Council for Crippled Children and Adults, as it was called then. All involved thought it was very successful and plans were already being made for the following year s ride. Now back to this coming Cont d. on pg. 39 sidebar 38 SnoRiderswest.com» WINTER 2013/2014

3 Yorkton Sno-Riders BY SANDY KONKEL Writing for the first two issues of SnoRiders is always a challenge to me as everything is just starting to gear up for the upcoming snowmobiling season. Our first sniff of snow appeared in October but quickly disappeared, which was a blessing as quite a few of the landowners had not yet completed their harvest. Hopefully, they were able to harvest their crops and complete the rest of their winter preparations. The club had its first meeting in October with a good representation of members. Everyone was revved and ready to get on with this 2013 season. This summer seemed to be very short and went so fast but it amazed me how members still found the time to do renovations to shelters and other maintenance work. Thank you to all of you for your dedication. Wood has been ordered for the shelters and will be delivered to the warm-up shacks in time for the snowmobiling season. Prairie Women on Snowmobiles BY CAROL MCKNIGHT The days are counting down and the following Mission 2014 core riders will be sledding through your community: Jodie Guse, Birch Hills; Patti Hoffinger, Saskatoon; Heather Foster, Colonsay; Diana Darbyshire, Big River; Gerri Moeller, Meadow Lake; Sancia Diebel, North Battleford; Courtney Hogemann, St. Gregor; Britney Palidwar, Nipawin; Lynn Palidwar, Nipawin; and Kacey Palidwar, Martensville. Alternates: Tracey Persicke, Prince Albert, and Cindy Gottlob, Meadow Lake. When you see any one of these ladies please give them your support! For bio s of the riders please check out our website, The 2014 Mission runs from January 31 to February 7, with the kickoff banquet being held in Prince Albert on January 30 and the finale in Nipawin on February 7. Please join us along the Mission route: Day 1 - January 31: Prince Albert, Shellbrook, Blaine Lake, Waldheim, Martensville. Day 2 - February 1: Martensville, cruit new members and volunteers. Being a volunteer has many advantages it can be an opportunity to meet new friends, help make decisions and make a difference to the trail network. The Big River Timber Trails Sno-Riders annual snowmobile rally is planned for February 8, 2014, so make sure and mark your calendar. Remember to make Big River your snowmobile vacation destination. An avalanche training course was held in October. I m not sure what transpired as climbing a stepladder almost makes me faint. I admire those of you who engage in this type of snowmobiling; I hear it is a beautiful experience. By the time this article is published the trade show in Saskatoon will be over. The trade show is always a great event and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Open house in Yorkton was held on November 16, Brown s Leisure World, Discovery Motorsports, King s Sport Leisure and Marine and Schrader s Honda Yamaha Suzuki were all on board and it turned out to be another great event. A Santa Claus parade was held in Yorkton on November 30. Thanks to all the members who volunteered to help make this occasion safe for everyone. On that note, I will sign off for now. Asquith, Biggar, Rosetown, Kindersley. Day 3 - February 2: Kindersley, Eston, Elrose, Kyle, Swift Current. Day 4 - February 3: Swift Current, Herbert, Chaplin, Mortlach, Caronport. Day 5 - February 4: Caronport, Rouleau, Milestone, Sedley, Regina. Day 6 - February 5: Regina, Regina Beach, Strasbourg, Nokomis, Humboldt. Day 7 - February 6: Humboldt, Englefeld, Wynyard, Wadena, Kelvington. Day 8 - February 7: Kelvington, Porcupine Plain, Tisdale, Nipawin. We would like to thank the Twin Lakes Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club, which generously donated a 1973 Sno Jet Star Jet 338 snowmobile to PWOS to use as a fundraiser. Also thanks to Schulte Industries from Englefeld, which manufactured an 84-inch three-point hitch snowblower and painted it pink for PWOS to raise money by selling tickets on it. If you would like to purchase tickets on either the sled or the snowblower please contact Prairie Women on Snowmobiles at cmcknight@sasktel.net. First off, 38 years later we are not running down unmarked highway ditches but have a decision to make on which groomed, well-signed trail to use. This year s event will have a route change, which is probably needed. The long trail will still head off to Rhein for a coffee break, but instead of going to Good Spirit Acres, the route will head north of Rhein to Zeke s at Mikado for lunch and fuel for our sleds courtesy of the Yorkton Coop. The route back to Yorkton will then head to Canora, Good Spirit and on back to Yorkton for the big banquet. Total length of this trail will be approximately 175 kilometres. A shorter trail will be put in to Good Spirit and back to Yorkton for those who only wish to ride about 95 kilometres. Our goal this year is to raise $155,000 for Easter Seals. More info can be found on the Snowarama web page: Come have a fun ride with us and help raise money for Easter Seals. Hudson Bay Trail Riders by Karen Dolezsar Hello everyone. I am sure all the clubs have been out getting ready for the snowmobile season. It seems one day it s fall and, in the blink of an eye, it s winter. Our club has been out signing, cleaning trails, building new woodboxes, painting, etc. There is always something to do and we never get as far ahead as we would like before the snow flies. Our club is very proud of our recent awards from SnoRiders magazine. We really had no idea the number of riders who Cont d. on pg. 40 sidebar WINTER 2013/2014» SnoRidersWest.com 39

4 Tremendous efforts required BY RICK DOLEZSAR, Zone 2 Trail Fund Rep As a volunteer with our local club here at Hudson Bay, this year I decided to get an early start on some of the trail, signage and shelter work. As of October 18, 2013, I have put in 40 hours of labour and 450 kilometres on my truck and, in addition, my wife, Karen, has put in 28 hours at the same time as well as the use of quads, tools, etc. This year the latter part of the summer was a lot drier than usual and access to many of our shelters and intersections was a lot more convenient that usual. In taking a look at what has been accomplished so far, we ve been able to access about 40 per cent of our intersections to ensure the most up-to-date You Are Here maps are installed, and ensure signage approaching these intersections is complete on permanent posts and mounting including T-Intersection, Stop Ahead and Stop signs. We ve also been able to visit five of our 11 shelters to clean them up, check the lighting systems and even do some painting. The warmer weather, sightseeing and being able to work with bare hands has helped a lot to keep the enthusiasm up. While we have a good feeling about what has been done to date, at the same time there is a realization that this is a never-ending task. Year after year our club struggles to get its 670 kilometres of trail ready for the public with the goal of completing the majority of this backbreaking work by the Christmas holiday season. We still have over 450 kilometres of forestry trail that need the annual deadfall and overhangs cleared. Here are a few numbers to put things in perspective: To have our trails and signing up to required standards we need 500 permanent posts installed, 50 You Are Here up-to-date intersection maps posted, approximately 150 Stop, Stop Ahead and T-Intersection signs in place, 800 Blue Diamond Trail number markers up, approximately 1,000 other corner, warning and regulatory signs posted, about 2,700 field, lake, ditch and open area stakes installed, and 20 cords of firewood put up to serve the 11 shelters. These annual requirements are in addition to the $400,000 worth of equipment and $160,000 annual operating costs that are involved with the club s annual budget. Of course, it is readily apparent that, although we will always rely hugely on volunteer efforts, it is virtually impossible to get all this work done and then taken down again in spring without hiring a couple of trail workers for eight to 10 weeks each year and having some paid groomer operators to put in the majority of the 500 to 600 hours of grooming required each year. Hudson Bay encompasses about seven per cent of the provincial trail system so if you wanted to play with numbers on a province-wide basis you could roughly multiply all of the above by 15 to determine what is required in the whole Saskatchewan system. I think TV personality Red Green has a point. If Continued on page 41 >> CLUB HUDSON BAY Cont d. from pg. 39 sidebar appreciate what Hudson Bay has to offer. And if Porcupine Trail Blasters BY KELLY DAROUG Hello snowmobilers! It is the season when we can concentrate on getting the trails in shape. The Porcupine Trail Blasters are looking at purchasing a small Cat for clearing trails. This would really help us widen out our trails as well as speed up the clearing of deadfall. The Greenwater Park trails were pushed wider last year so the trails there should be awesome One of the biggest snowmobile rallies in Saskatchewan is organized by the Optimist Club of Arcola and is taking place at Arcola on January 25, If you haven t already made plans to attend, rest assured that it is a sight to see. A record 529 snowmobiles rode the club trails through the Moose Mountain region of southeastern Saskatchewan last year. There is a pit stop partway through where you can warm up and get a bite to eat, which is all included with your entry fee. With that many snowmobiles, one would expect the trails to be destroyed, but that is not the case as we have a dedicated groomer operator in that area named Doug Illchuk, who goes out well into the midnight hours after the final sled is parked and gets all the trails back in top shape. you re not involved, get with it! Oh yeah, one more thing, please don t be the first person out on the trail this winter that says, You know what you guys should do? To everybody else, Happy trails! this year. We hope to see lots of snow this year and some cold weather early on to freeze up the water on the trails, so we can get them groomed up before Christmas. Have a great sledding season and hope to see everyone on the beautiful trails the Porcupine Plain area has to offer. Take care and be safe on the trails. Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club BY TROY FOSTER Last season was the first full season for the new drag we purchased in 2012 and it has proven to be a worthy asset. Our trails last season were reported to be the best ever. The club s older drags are heavy and work the BR400 snowcats hard, thus using more fuel and putting more stress on the tracks. This season, with the purchase of a 2013/14 club membership, you will receive 10 per cent off your food purchases at the Kenosee Inn, which is located in Moose Mountain Provincial Park along Trail 311B. 6 Candle Lake Sno-Drifters BY CAREY PAINCHAUD Pasquia Snow Goers Club BY KATHY LINDSAY It s that time of year when you wake up to a definite chill in the air. You know there aren t many days before another wonderful winter of riding begins. For snowmobile clubs, it is their tap on the shoulder to get ready. They want to have everything in place and trail-ready. Once the groomer s first pass happens, the signs go up and trail imperfections are fixed. Groomers do such a wonderful job on these trails. It s surprising what is hidden under that smooth trail. Everyone is impatiently waiting for the trail to be finished so they can take that first ride of the season. Once the first pass has been done, Stop Hello from the Candle Lake Sno-Drifters we are looking forward to seeing everyone on the trails again this year. We have been working hard as a group over the last several months preparing our trail signage and working on the construction of our new clubhouse. We are anticipating a long winter again as we have received approximately 25 centimetres of snow already and it looks like it is going to stay and create a good base. We have had many members out on the trails installing permanent signage and feel that we are in great shape to start the year. The groomer is ready; however, we need some cold weather to freeze the water and swamp areas to allow the groomer access. The club has been busy with the construction of our new clubhouse. Our club project this year is to build a warm-up shelter in memory of Marlin Kapeller who lost his life in an ATV accident in The warmup shelter will be located close to where Marlin learned to snowmobile and will provide inspiration to other children and people with challenges. They, too, can do anything they put their mind to. Marlin found new independence on his snowmobile in the winter and his quad in the summer. Last winter, Marlin proudly rode his snowmobile to Hudson Bay and back on our groomed trails. His tenacity in adversity gives courage to us all. Come to the scenic Northeast where many trails of adventure beckon. On November 4 we got 18 inches of white gold dropped on us. When we got home from the snowmobile show on Monday night, all you could hear was the drone of snowblowers and Bobcats trying to open up driveways and roadways. I love living here and the warm sense of community it brings. We managed to get a good start on mowing some of the trails, but unfortunately had a few breakdowns. Now that we ve had this dump of snow, it s going to be a little more difficult. We will be doing some work trying to get this blanket of insulation pounded down so that things can start to freeze. In this humble writer s opinion, the snowmobile show was a great success. We made a lot of new friends and reconnected with old ones. I met Randy Swenson of Thunderstruck Films fame and I have to tell you, I felt like a 14-year-old girl meeting Justin Bieber. The winners of our table draw were Shirley St. Louis of Hudson Bay - a Whiteswan Snow Hawks T-shirt, and Ben Wiebe of Saskatoon - a Rainbow Lodge (Piprell Lake) weekend package. 8 Broadview Snowbusters Club BY SHIRLEY LARTER At the time of preparing this article, we haven t received any snow that has stuck. However, we did have a snowfall in mid-october that reminded us that winter was around the corner and to start making preparations. Our club held its first meeting on October 23, The present executive graciously volunteered to remain in their positions but only for one more year at which time a new executive will be required. One hates to lose excellent executive members; however, all good things must come to an end as other club members take up the reins. Several membership dues were paid and we are pleased to gain another member who recently moved into Continued on sidebar CO-OP DEALERS, SASKATCHEWAN SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION AND THE MELFORT & DISTRICT TRAIL RIDERS INC. VISIT: FOR ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION AND THE REGISTRATION FORM ALL SNOWMOBILES MUST BE REGISTERED SPONSORED BY: >> CLUB BROADVIEW SNOWBUSTERS Continued from left the community. We had to replace two new batteries and cables that were purchased last winter for our groomer. In the fall, someone entered the farmyard where the groomer was stored, cut the battery cables and took the new batteries and tools. This was an extra, unnecessary expense that no club should have to endure but is a lesson learned the club needs to secure and store equipment in a different manner. Volunteer club members have cleared brush off the trails south of Broadview and also into the Qu Appelle Valley, mounted another solar panel in the Missing Link Shelter, made a bigger door in the sign storage shed, and replaced a door at the secondary warm-up shelter. Landowners have been contacted to sign the new forms granting permission for snowmobile trails on their land. We so appreciate landowners granting their permission, enabling snowmobilers to enjoy the trail system. Fundraising event dates were set with the first one being a soup and sandwich get-together on January 10, Our annual poker derby is on February 1. Lastly, congratulations are extended to Ben and Sharon Baker of Baker s Small Engine Repair Ltd., the snowmobile dealership in Kipling. They celebrated 30 years in business by hosting an open house on November 1, Several of our club members attended this memorable event to offer congratulations and show appreciation for the great service and support that Ben and his staff provide to our club and individual members. Safe sledding to all! 44 SnoRiderswest.com» WINTER 2013/2014
