Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club P.O. BOX 519, BOBCAYGEON, ONTARIO, CANADA, K0M 1A0 Fall Newsletter 2014 President s Report Twin Mountains Snowmobile Club trails were second to none last season. We had many great comments about our trails. Our permit sales were up, our grooming hours were up and our volunteer hours were up. This was all due to an old fashioned winter. It has been my pleasure once again to work with some of the most dedicated volunteers. It also helps that they are all great people. I am also grateful for some new directors as well as volunteers because many hands make it easier for everyone. New faces also bring new ideas and strengths. I am looking forward to a great future for Twin Mountains. This year we will be limiting the amount of newsletters that are mailed out. Utilizing the power of the internet will create a huge cost and time savings to the club. The advent of online sales has created a large directory which we can use; therefore we can this newsletter directly to you. I would encourage you to pass on the information to people who seldom check s and we will try to still mail some to members without addresses. These types of savings can be put back on the trails. I again encourage everyone to follow the Twin Mountains Facebook page for up to date trail happenings, events and interesting pictures. Nadene has put this thread on the side of our website for anyone without Facebook. The up to date information could possibly answer any questions you have as well as connect you to us like never before, especially if you are interested in coming out for a regular ride with club members throughout the winter. After the 1 st of November you can purchase your permit online or at any of our local vendors listed on the website and in this newsletter. See you on the trails. Wayne Haagsma TMSC President Vice President s Report Welcome to all sledders. Your dedicated and ongoing support of our club is greatly appreciated. We will continue to do our very best to provide you with the greatest trails in all of Ontario. What a GREAT winter we had last season!!! We are all hoping that Mother Nature will smile upon us once more and send the snow we need to produce perfect trails.

We have been using a rubber trench tire roller for the last couple of years to pack our trails before we start grooming with the heavy drags. This procedure has proven to be very successful allowing us to pack the loose snow first and then after freezing, our drags can level the trails without scraping the snow down to the dirt. We have been busy all summer clearing loose stones, brush, downed trees and filling in some wet areas on our trails. TMSC has applied for National Trail Coalition (NTC) funding for some work on E108 and we have just learned that we have been successful in obtaining a grant. This work will be starting next week. I would like to extend a very SPECIAL thank-you to all of our landowners who allow us to use their land for our trails. These are very special people. I would also like to thank our permit vendors and volunteers. They dedicate countless hours towards trail work, selling permits, groomer maintenance, website management, etc. All of these fundamentals go hand in hand to make TMSC the wonderful success it is. Larry Hulsmans TMSC Vice President Trails With the fabulous 2013/2014 snowmobile season being one of the best in recent memory we eagerly anticipate the 2014/2015 season. We are working hard to ensure our trails are maintained to the high standard that the TMSC snowmobile enthusiasts have come to expect. As a progressive and innovative snowmobile club we continue to nurture our relationships with the Kawartha ATV Association and OF4WD by working together for the betterment of our trail system. Ongoing trail maintenance which includes removing loose stones from the trails, removing fallen trees and trimming back underbrush growth (all performed by greatly appreciated volunteers) helps to allow TMSC to provide a truly memorable snowmobiling experience. As we approach the 2014/2015 snowmobile season plans are in place to perform a comprehensive repair to a 7 km section of trail E108 between the junction of E108 and the 460 and the junction of E108 and the 490 (North Junction). This plan focuses on

building a trail base through some of the deeper water/mud holes, thereby allowing trail packing and grooming operations to take place as soon as the snow arrives. Where trail width permits, mud holes will be maintained along side the snowmobile trail for the enjoyment of the ATV enthusiast. TMSC is waiting for the deer hunt to end so the work can begin. In our commitment to providing a great snowmobile trail system, this enhancement to E108 will be completed before the start of the 2014/2015 snowmobile season. If anyone is interested in volunteering for trail maintenance please contact any of the TMSC executive via our website or through Facebook. Al Cymbaluk TMSC Trails Coordinator The snowmobiling season is fast approaching with the sled permits now on sale and the Toronto Snowmobile and ATV Show having come and gone already. Volunteers have been out working all summer so the trails will be ready to go when the white stuff starts to fall in November. Landowners/Volunteers If you would like to help the club out with any of the numerous chores that need to be completed before the riding starts please contact Mark Johnson. Volunteers commonly repair wooden bridges, install signage, brush out trails, deliver maps to vendors and sell permits for our club. Many volunteers are retired and are able to help us throughout the week while those who are still working lend a hand on Saturdays and Sundays. We can not thank our landowners enough for their generosity in providing us with the land that our trails cross. Without our landowners, our club would not exist. You are certainly a very special bunch of people and we thank you. See you on the trails, Mark Johnson TMSC Landowner/Volunteer Coordinator

Trail Patrol Shawn Patrick is now a certified trail patrol instructor and all of our trail patrol members are up to date in their training so we will be ready for the up coming season. We are looking forward to serving our club and of course all of the riders who use our trails. If anyone would like any information about becoming a trail patroller, please contact Shawn Patrick or any one of our trail patrollers. Last winter was a great success as we all know thanks to the amazing snow conditions. Our trails were very, busy last season with many club rides and with visitors who travelled from all over Ontario to ride with us, enjoy our trails and the Kawarthas. As is now common, we had 3 trail patrol weekends last winter. We saw fantastic compliance with everyone having their OFSC trail passes. Please follow our website for dates of the 2015 trail patrol weekends. They will be posted there as soon as we get them. This year as well we will be out riding, patrolling and welcoming new and long time riders to our trails. We usually ride from our clubhouse on Saturday mornings and really enjoy the company of other riders who want to have a great day, enjoy our trails and learn about our club. We hope to see everyone come out on the trails. See you soon and bring on the snow!!! Shawn Patrick TMSC Trail Patrol Grooming We couldn t have asked for a better first full season for our new to us Tucker Cat. While we were able to get the Tucker out on the trails at the tail end of the 2013 season, the 2014 season was its first full winter with us. Together with the BR180, we accumulated

grooming 1,060 hours. This was almost double the hours that we put on the season before. The exceptional snowfall that we experienced was a groomer s dream. With lots of snow to work with and lots of snow to act as a buffer between equipment and rocks, we were able to provide remarkable trails all season long which experiencing very little equipment damage and down time. We are hoping for repeat of last year as we train some new groomer operators. Lots of snow and lots of groomer operators leads to lots of great trails and lots of happy sledders. We ll see you out there on the trails. Jim Thomas TMSC Groomer Coordinator Social Media Please be sure to visit our website frequently. There are a few additional features that we have added in order to make information more easily accessible to people. A Facebook Page feed has been added to the side bar so people can view status updates and new photos right from the website instead of having to be a Facebook member. Nadene is constantly posting photos of trail conditions when she is out riding or grooming. She also posts updates to inform of things such as freshly groomed trails, hazards, broken down equipment, and other pertinent information. You will now be able to see this from our website. Our Facebook Page and Twitter account have proven to be awesome tools for us to communicate with our riders and members. It is amazing how a little post to the TMSC Facebook one evening turned into a huge impromptu group ride that had people coming from as far away as London to join up. We ended up having a fabulous time and met some really wonderful new friends. Look for more of these postings this coming season. A second addition to the website is a sign up area where any interested party can sign up to receive newsletters and other notices such as club rides and events, etc. We will be

sending this newsletter out by for the first time using our member list and the list of those who have recently signed up to receive this type of notification. So far, we have had quite a few new people sign up though our website. This is very encouraging as it will be a great way for us to communicate with our member. As this is the first time that we will be using this method, please bear with us as we experiment and learn. We will be leaving hard-copy newsletters at our clubhouse and have them on hand at the upcoming Sledarama for distribution Yamaha Power Tour Our 2014 Yamaha Power Tour was a huge success. We had over 140 test riders sign up and ride a wide variety of Yamaha demo sleds. Jonesey and Oz were in prime form at the BBQ and no one went away hungry. The highlight of the day was when we were able to take a young lady from California on a snowmobile ride. This gal had never seen snow before and prior to the Power Tour had occasion to visit an ice fishing hut and do a little ATVing. Nadene took her for a ride on the club sled, and although she was a little bit apprehensive at first, she relaxed a great deal after figuring out that she was not going to die. We came back to the shed and took lots of pictures. It was a great day for everyone who participated in the Power Tour demos rides, and it was a fantastic day for our SoCal visitor. What fun. It was as much of a charge for Nadene to take this young lady out on a sled as it was for this young lady to hang on to the Nadene and scream all the way up the 460. Once again, we would like to thank McGregor Sportsline for hosting this wildly popular event. It is something that we all look forward to every year.

2 nd Annual Joint User Fun Run for Toys KATVA, OF4WD and TMSC once again held a joint trail users group ride to raise money and toys for the Kinsmen toy drive in Lindsay. It was a wet and soggy day but the turnout was fantastic nonetheless. ATVers and Four Wheel Drive enthusiasts from all over Ontario attended to participate in this very worthwhile cause. It was a fun day and it gave riders a chance to experience the trails from the perspective of each other. A fantastic meal was served up after the event was over and all in all over $1000 and two trailers full of toys were raised for the Lindsay Kinsmen Toy Drive. Way to go riders. Permit News The three and seven day permits are available online only. This is new for this year. Also new this year is the change in the classic snowmobile permit. The OFSC has put a cap on the classic snowmobile permits for sleds that are 15 years and older. Therefore the classic permit will be available for machines that are model year 1999 and older. There was much debate over this at the OFSC AGM however the motion was passed to hold the classic snowmobile at model year 1999 until 2019 at which time the classic snowmobile will be defined as a snowmobile that is 20 years and older. Classic snowmobile permits can be purchased from Wayne Haagsma or from Nadene Nicholas for a price of $140 prior to December 1st, After that date the price of a Classic permit will rise to $170. A copy of your ownership will be required for the purchase of a Classic permit. Replacement Permits are available from the noted vendors for $10. You will need to turn in your original permit. If you do not have your original permit consumers must first file a police report. The Ontario Provincial Police have an online reporting system which will assist permit buyers in reporting a lost or stolen permit. There are some exceptions to this as the individual filing the complaint must reside within an OPP jurisdiction. The reporting site is very self explanatory and helpful when explaining the process to anyone looking to get a replacement permit. OPP Online Reporting System Note: Users of the site will be prompted to enter their city and select it from a map. If they do not fall within OPP jurisdiction, the site provides them with the name of their local police department. Also, the site is not compatible with mobile devices such as phone or tablets.

The price of a seasonal permits will remain the same this season for all riders who were unable to purchase their permits online before the November 1st. Permits purchased after November 1st but prior to December 1st, 2013 will be at a cost of $210 each. Permits purchased after December 1st will go up to $260 each. TMSC volunteers will be out at various Power sport and Vendor locations on weekends in November, in order to make your permit purchase easier Permit Vendors McGregor Sportsline Season Birch Point Marina Season HB Cycle Season Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce Season Pirate's Cove Season Crystal Lake Marina Season Snow City Cycle & Marine Season Gateway Powersports and Marine Season Kinmount Independent Grocers Season Peterborough Powersports Season Wayne Haagsma Season, Classic, Replacement Nadene Nicholas & Jim Thomas Season, Classic 2015 Board of Directors The following is a list of the current Board Members, contact numbers, and respective responsibilities: President Wayne Haagsma (705) Vice-President Larry Hulsmans (705) Secretary/Website Nadene Nicholas (705) Treasurer Larry Hulsmans (705) Landowners Mark Johnson (647) Grooming and Signage Jim Thomas (705) Signage Steve McCaughey (705) Trails Al Cymbaluk (705) Laverne Clark (705) Trail Patrol Shawn Patrick (905) Health & Safety Wayne Haagsma (705)
