I guess it really is true that time flies! Our July monthly meeting of the GWRRA Hart City Wings chapter was well attended with a lot of interesting thoughts and suggestions on upcoming events. We had visitors Marc and Robbie Nelson from Chapter U in Angola, IN. They talked about their upcoming 11 th Annual Hog Roast on August 13 th and the fun events planned, including the chicken throwing contest of which our own Connie Gless is a former winner! On June 4 th chapter member Mark Skinner led a group to the Hayden Honda Bike show. It was a beautiful ride, with a stopover in Topeka for an awesome buffet, even if we did get a little wet on the way home. The annual Ride For Kids, fundraiser for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, was held Sunday, June 26 th at Pin Hook Park in South Bend. Assistant Director Rich Durecki reported there were thirteen of our Chapter members attending. Although the turnout was smaller than expected, everyone had a good time contributing to a great cause. Our Dinner Rides every Thursday, except meeting night, have been well attended too. There have been several interesting rides although Mother Nature put a damper on some with rain showers. We encourage you to join us on future rides. We meet in the parking lot behind Discovery Middle School on Ash Road. Kickstands up promptly at 6:30 p.m. Also this Sunday, July 17 th, is the Cass County Cancer Services ride which begins at the Edwardsburg Fire Department on M-62 with kickstands up at noon. This is a scenic ride through Cass County ending at Dowagiac Moose Lodge with a dinner and fund raiser auction. Cost is $15.00 per rider, $10.00 per passenger. All proceeds are used locally to help individuals battling cancer. There are lots of other activities being planned by our Chapter, including a Scavenger Hunt, our Progressive Dinner Ride, a day trip to Birch Run and the Fall Color Tour train ride. There are numerous events to do with our Chapter friends, if you want to be involved. That s all for this month. Remember, life is shortggpay it forward. MONTHLY MEETINGS are held the 1st Thursday of each month at the Perkins Restaurant in Elkhart on Cassopolis Road just north of the Toll Road. Dinner at 6:30, meeting at 7:15 PM Bob & Sue DINNER RIDES are every Thursday night May-Sept. (except meeting night). Meet in the parking lot BEHIND Discovery Middle School on Ash Road. Leaving promptly at 6:30 PM 1
FROM YOUR ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS Richard & Cari Durecki Well June is now in the rear view mirror, and it was a busy month for many of us. I think everyone that came out to Pla-Mor for the campout had a great time. We had over 30 that attended; this also included 7 from Goshen s chapter. A big thank you to Bruce and Lucy for playing hosts and arranging everything for us, Lucy has already said; same time next year. Thanks again Bruce and Lucy for letting Cari and I bunk in with you in your camper. June 26 th was The Ride for Kids at South Bend s Pinhook Park, despite the iffy weather our chapter was well represented with 13 members that came out and supported the worthy cause. Overall attendance was down from past years, no doubt due to the possibility of thunderstorms predicted that day. Even though we did get a little wet before the ride began, it turned out to be decent for the ride itself. On July 16 th, a scavenger hunt is planned, leaving from our normal meeting location (Discovery School) around 12 noon. What to bring; a digital camera or cell phone to take photos of various items on a list that will be provided prior to departure. A picnic meal will be provided at the conclusion of the excursion. Also as part of the entry fee please bring items for Ronald McDonald Room. If you re able, also bring something to share at the picnic. If it needs refrigerated; Cari will have the car at the school, and she will store food items in a cool place. July 23 rd is the chapter s Progressive Dinner ride; we ll leave the Discovery School at 12 noon. Leaders will take us on about a 45 min ride to a destination for each of the following courses, appetizers, salad, entrée and finally dessert. On July th is the Region D rally in Coldwater Michigan, Bob is leading a day ride up there on Saturday. Anyone wishing to go, the ride leaves from the school parking lot at 10am. On August, 6 th Whalen s are hosting the chapter s annual corn and sausage roast. Their pool is open so be sure to bring your suit. This is one of our well attended events so we are asking everyone to bring a dish to pass. A sign up sheet was passed out at the meeting so if you weren t there and plan on attending please let Tom or Connie know so they can plan accordingly. That s all for this month, be good to yourself and to each other. Rich & Cari 2
FROM YOUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR Connie Gless GL 1800 Combined Braking System AKA Linked Braking System Honda has put a braking system in the Gold Wing that is known as a Combined Braking System. It utilizes a braking system that equalizes and maximizes the braking potential of both wheels thru either the brake pedal or the brake lever. The front wheel as two brake rotors. Each brake rotor uses a caliper that has 3 pistons. When the brakes are applied, hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons causing them to contact and push the brake pads into contact with the rotor surface. Increasing braking pressure causes the pistons to push the pads more into the rotor harder resulting in more friction resistance and more stopping power. The rear wheel brake works much the same as the front only the rear wheel only has one brake rotor. When the brake pedal is depressed braking pressure is applied to the two outer pistons of the rear brake caliper and the center piston of the left front caliper. When the brake lever is squeezed on the handlebar braking pressure is applied to all pistons of the right front caliper, the two outer pistons of the left front caliper and the center piston of the rear caliper. When both lever and pedal are used at the same time maximum braking can be achieved. The best way to stop a motorcycle, especially a large bike like a Gold Wing, is to use both brakes fully without locking either wheel. Riders must continually practice normal stop brake application as well as emergency braking to effectively stop without skidding either wheel. Some Gold Wings have an Anti-Lock Braking System. We will discuss this System at the next meeting. 3
From your Newsletter Editor and former Chapter Director Vernon Daly Ronald McDonald Family Room I want to thank everyone who has brought in items to donate to Ronald McDonald Family Room in South Bend Memorial Hospital. As has been mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter, some of the highest use items are individual snack items like potato chips, Doritos, snack crackers, etc., and drink boxes like Capri Sun or similar. These items are very popular on the cart which is taken around to 5 different units each morning. Patients and caregivers are allowed to take items from this cart, all free of charge, and these items go fast. We also take coffee (McDonalds supplies the coffee) and several other items on the cart, but the snack items and drink boxes are really popular. If you see any of these items on sale please pick some up. We can always use more. On another note, as has been mentioned before, there is a BIG expansion project now under way, where the Family Room will become a full fledged Ronald McDonald House. We will expand from three bedrooms to twenty, and the day use area will be MANY times larger with much improved facilities. I mention this because it takes a LOT of volunteers to run a facility of this size. There are three chapter members who now volunteer. The commitment is only one three-hour shift every other week. When the new Ronald McDonald House opens up, which is projected to be first quarter of 2017, we will need additional volunteers. If you ve been thinking about doing this I urge you to go to the Family Room some time and talk with the volunteer coordinator and get a tour. While there you can pick up an application. I ll even volunteer to meet you there, or take you and give you a tour. Its not a hard job, and we really make a difference for the people that are at the hospital with a sick child. Please think about volunteering. 4
Past Events Meeting Notes: By Vernon Daly We had 19 members and two guests, Marc and Robbie Nelson from Angola, present at the July meeting. Marc and Robbie were there to promote the Chapter U Hog Roast. This is always a fun event and we usually have O2 members attend. We will be planning a day ride over to Angola for this event. Details will be forthcoming. Bob opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and leading the pledge of allegiance. Rich then talked about various upcoming events including the scavenger hunt on July16th and the Progressive Dinner Ride on July 23rd. More information on both of these events can be found on page 5 of this newsletter. Rich also reminded everyone that they are requesting that everyone bring a donation for Ronald McDonald Family Room at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Bob commented that individual snack items like potato chips, Doritos, etc as well as individual drink/juice boxes go really fast as they are taken around on the cart each morning. Tom Whalen reminded everyone that the chapter Corn and Sausage roast, at their house, is coming up in another month and urged everyone that is planning on attending to get on the signup sheet. That is the only way we know how much food to buy. If you weren't at the meeting, and aren t on the attendance list, give Tom or Connie a call. Bob then mentioned the upcoming Region D Rally and stated that he would lead a ride to that event on Saturday, July 30th. He is planning on leaving the school at 10AM. There s no signup sheet. Just show up at the school if you wish to go. He also reminded everyone of the Cass County Cancer Ride on July 17th at the Edwardsburg Fire Department. Registration starts at 10AM. Connie Gless then talked about the braking system on Goldwings, how it works and the fact that it is a linked system. She reminded everyone that any stop should use both the foot brake and the handlebar brake lever. She also suggested that everyone should practice regular braking techniques as well as panic stops so that it comes naturally. Wolfie reminded everyone that the northern part of the state will be hosting a Fall Fest Ride-In at Central Park in Warsaw on September 25th. It will start around 12:30. Everyone is asked to bring a canned good for the food pantry. McLeish Camping What a beautiful weekend, a little warm, but no rain. There were quite a few overnight campers and several who came just for the day on Saturday. We even had somewhere around 7 from Chapter H. Glad everyone could make it. And thanks to everyone who contributed food to the many meals that were served for the group. Thanks also to Lucy for fixing us all up with steaks and to Bruce (and whoever helped) for grilling them. Everything was really good. We even got to enjoy a civil war reenactment. Good chapter outing. Ride For Kids In all we had seven bikes and 13 people from the chapter attend the Ride For Kids. We had some rain just before and as the ride was starting, but after that it cleared up and was actually quite warm. Unfortunately, most of us had put on our rain gear, which made the ride a little uncomfortable. But it was a good ride and a good day overall. The ride brought in a little over $46,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Meeting Notes Continued Sue chute presented Dumbo to Vern Daly for not following the tank full rule at the Kendallville bike show ride. We had to stop, in the rain, so I could fill up. In my defense, it was a last minute decision to go and I didn t have time before the ride. But that s no excuse. She also presented Udderly to Mark and Carol for always being willing to step in and help when needed.
