Sunshine Lady Ruth Malone Newsletter Cathy Kelley Couple of the Year 2017 Chris & Marge Nagel Ride Coordinator Paul Breeden Greetings from our Chapter Directors Judy & Shane Patishnock This year seems like it s off to a whirlwind start! February really kept Shane and me busy between trying to keep up with family, our Chapter H family and fundraiser, and work. This month we re doing something just a tad different with our newsletter articles. Instead of me recapping the monthly events that we ve all participated in, Kevin Paul, our Assistant Chapter Director, will provide the recap. So look for his article and read about our fun rides and events. However, I do want to say a little bit about our annual Spaghetti Dinner Bingo fundraiser, this was our 20 th anniversary for our fundraiser! We want to say thank you to our GWRRA family who supported us: MD-B, MD-C, MD-F, MD-I, MD-J, MD-L, DE-B, PA-B, and PA-V. We also want to thank our Chapter H Staff for all their efforts in putting this together as well as our members who worked hard during the Spaghetti Dinner Bingo. It wouldn t be possible without your help and support!! I can also sincerely say that I was so happy that we didn t have snow on our Spaghetti Dinner Bingo date! Last but definitely not least, Shane and I want to thank Kevin Maddox (PA-B) and the management personnel at Lancaster Honda (2350 Dairy Road, Lancaster, PA) for their generosity in freely giving our chapter several bottles of Honda polish and Honda cleaner, a t-shirt, a backpack, and a dufflebag that we were able to give away to our attendees. So check out Kevin Paul s article in our newsletter for more fun details and pictures. MD-H Chapter Meeting 4 th Sunday at Golden Corral, 706 S. Philadelphia Blvd., Aberdeen, MD Breakfast at 0800; Meeting at 0900
2 Time is slowly inching closer and closer to Spring! For some riders, their bikes never really got put away for the winter season and were ridden when weather and events permitted. For riders who had winterized and put their bikes away it s time to start thinking about getting that bike ready for the riding season. So do a thorough check of your bike (think T-CLOCK). And if you re not comfortable doing this yourself, consider having it serviced by a reputable dealer. You could just save a life mainly your own and potentially a co-rider by ensuring your bike is properly serviced and maintained. Our Ride Coordinator, Paul Breeden, is working hard to put together lots of fun and interesting rides and events. He needs your input to make our riding season successful, so if you have an idea for a ride to your favorite place, or a dinner or lunch ride, or maybe to your favorite museum(s) or restaurant(s), let him know. For members who take pictures at our various rides and events, please remember to send those pictures to Shane and to Cathy. Shane will be working on putting together our slide show for our holiday party and Cathy needs those pictures to include in our newsletter! So folks, mark your calendar with our Upcoming March Activities! Your support is needed to make our riding events successful and FUN! Last but certainly not least, mark your calendar for the Save the Dates events. Looking forward to seeing y all at our upcoming events! In Memory.. Unfortunately our chapter received some sad news at the beginning of February. Mr. Bill Hartman, one of our long-time chapter members, passed away on 2 Feb. Bill had a series of strokes a number of years ago, but Linda learned to ride a trike and they remained active members of the chapter until just recently. Bill s family held a memorial at the St. Bernadette Parish in Drexel Hill, PA, on 11 Feb for him with relatives and friends, and a large number of our chapter members also attended. Please keep Linda (Bill s wife) and family in your thoughts and prayers. We will certainly miss his sense of humor and his beautiful smile.
3 Greetings from our Assistant Chapter Director Kevin Paul This month for our Fire House Challenge we went on a ride to Robert Fulton Fire House for their breakfast fundraiser. Then we went to the Refton, PA Fire House for their fundraiser. We also had a good turn out and ride to MD-I gathering on Feb 5. Then on Feb 12 we split up again and went to MD-C and PA-V gatherings. A few of our members went to the Mariner Health Care Center in Bel Air to serve the folks there a Valentine dinner. This is an annual event that Fran coordinates each year and the people there just love it. On Feb 18 we had our Spaghetti Bingo dinner. We had a good turn out and had lots of fun. Here are a few photos of some of the winners. More photos later in the newsletter.
4 Greetings from our Rider Educator Rodney Malone Greetings All! What a fast and mild winter we are having. It has been good for those who love to ride all year long. I wanted to share with everyone an article I came across online while I was visiting the motorcyclebasics.com web site. Please review the following article on Group Riding ( Riding a motorcycle is a great deal of fun, but it is a lot more fun when you have a few friends to ride with. Riding in a group does however have its own set of challenges. The first is communication. Anyone who has ridden in a group knows that it is difficult to talk to other riders while you are riding, unless everyone has an Intercom system. Although an intercom system is probably the best form of on bike communication, not every rider has one (due to affordability or practicality issues). Therefore, it is important that the riders in a group have a set of basic hand signals so that they can communicate effectively while they are on the road (see your gold book for hand signals guide). Each group should have at least a basic set of signals that can easily convey issues ranging from the need to stop (gas, restroom/rest break, and bike problems) to warnings (debris/road hazards, and direction changes). Another problem while riding in a relatively large group (approximately 6 or more riders) is keeping the group together. Things such stop lights/stop signs and other vehicles on the road tend to create chaos for the cohesive nature of a group. There will be instances when a group may be broken up into smaller groups: Only a portion of the group makes it through a light before it changes Turning at an intersection allows other vehicles to divide the group Not all riders can pass a vehicle(s) safely Mechanical problem/ rider falls at the middle or near the back of the group What can the Leader(s) of the group do to keep this from happening? There are a few things that the riders can do to keep their group together as well as make their ride safer. As the lead rider approaches a light that is about to change, he/she has a few options: If there is enough space & time and it is safe to do so, slowdown and let the light change before the group arrives Pull over after passing the light or slow down so that the rest of the group can catch up without having to do excessive speeds When passing slower traffic: Do not pass until there is enough room for all riders to pass (if the group is relatively small) After passing a vehicle, make enough room for the riders behind you. You don t want to stand another rider in no man s land (the wrong side of the yellow line) with oncoming traffic The most important thing that a group can do to make their ride more enjoyable and safer is to be organized. The entire group should know the destination of the ride, as well as the route being taken. There should also be designated rest stop as well as meeting spots in case the group does get separated. What this does is take pressure off riders who are separated from the rest of the group. Riders will be less inclined to ride over their heads in an effort to try and catch up/ keep up with the group, if they know that everyone will be waiting for them at a certain gas station, restaurant, etc., up the road. This is particularly true of newer riders, who might be uncomfortable with the pace set by more experienced riders in the group. Cell phones are also a good idea in case of an emergency the rest of the group can be contacted and kept apprised of the situation. Ride Prepared, Be Safe, and Have Fun
