2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Last Sunday David and Pam Woodhouse organised for D.G. Sandra and Sam, Graham and Marion and myself and Tony to visit Cyril Richarde to wish him well for his birthday to come and for Sandra to present him with a signed letter from the R.I. President. After congratulating him on behalf of the Club I stood back whilst those who know him better chatted to him. Tony and I were trying to use our phones to video the conversations without any luck but had one of us been successful it would have been a fascinating few minutes of history as he discussed the orphanage project. It is always a privilege to be the president of a Rotary Club but it is moments like these that stand out in one s memory. This Wednesday saw a small number of us at the VMR on the spit. It is an incredible organisation considering everyone is a volunteer and the work itself can be challenging and dangerous. Although the weather wasn t ideal for a BBQ they have offered us the use of their facilities at any time and it certainly has a view worth seeing again. This weekend of course is the big weekend in the District calendar and on behalf of our Club I would like to congratulate D.G. Sandra for an interesting and successful year. See you next week. 3 Romac Trivia Night For 8 years Rotarians have been enjoying this very different, very enjoyable social event. The many humorous photos beamed onto large screens accompanying each trivia question, the relaxed, social environment and of course that your supporting ROMAC, a Rotary project run by volunteer Rotarians throughout Australia and New Zealand that changes and saves underprivileged children s lives makes this entertaining night out a winner. Speaking of which, this year you could easily win and show everyone that yours is the smartest Rotary Club on the Gold Coast! But only if you re smart enough to accept this lighthearted challenge and bring your partners, friends and potential new members (before someone else invites them!) to the friendliest, most fun night out you ve had ever since... you ll know the answer to that one too! Date: 6:30 for 7:00pm, Friday 10th May 2013 Venue: Paradise Showroom, Arts Centre Gold Coast. Cost: $49 p/p including dinner. Payment in advance please. A request: Please help your fellow Rotarian volunteers continue saving children's lives with your Club donation to ROMAC; $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 or whatever you can. Please bring your cheque, payable to ROMAC, who will issue a receipt. RSVP: To your club s on-to-trivia coordinator, or Phil Rosenberg philtini@hotmail.com On behalf of the children whose lives you ll save, Thank you. SERVICE ABOVE SELF-100 NOT OUT! Cyril Richarde Southport Rotarian and Past President Cyril Richarde AM celebrates his 100 th birthday with fellow Rotarians on Saturday April 20, Cyril and his sister became orphaned when both of their parents died in He became a carpenter working in rural Victoria and Melbourne, before coming to the Gold Coast in 1957 where he was inducted into Southport Rotary club on November 18, 1958 and began an extraordinary journey in Rotary community service. Cyril s childhood strongly influenced his Rotary service. His sister had been a victim of Polio, so it was not surprising that he soon arranged for children with Polio in the Xavier Home for Crippled Children in Brisbane to have a beach holiday, a project that continued for many years. In 1962 whilst President of Southport Rotary, Cyril and PDG Keith Hopper (Rotary Club of Inverell) agreed to provide teams to visit Indonesia to build schools and hospitals. To obtain subsidised transport from QANTAS, a project title was needed, which became Fourth Arm In Action FAIM. Cyril undertook 23 tours of duty to FAIM projects in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Cyril s Billy was first circulated at Southport Rotary Club meetings in 1965 to defray the cost of powdered milk for FAIM projects. Donations to Cyril s Billy have also supported schools in Kiribati, as well sponsoring the Rotator April 16 3
4 education of needy children in Indonesia. Educating Indonesian children is now a RAWCS project in District In 1986, Cyril s eyesight became impaired. He decided that Blind and Vision Impaired people of the Gold Coast needed a meeting hall. Within two years he had obtained a grant of land and raised $140,000 to construct the meeting hall, with Rotarians donating professional services to this project. Congratulations Cyril, for your remarkable contribution to Rotary. Only in an advisory capacity. before 6.00pm He suffers from alcoholic rheumatism. He gets stiff in most joints. There are two types of people Those with swimming pools and those who can t keep their heads above water. Success is relative. The more success the more relatives. It s not the cost of a strapless gown. It s the upkeep. History s mysteries are those of the past Present intrigues seem worse, and are vast. But before you condemn This generation, pro tem Remember, you re also one of the cast. Wonderful woman my mother in law. 75 years old and doesn t use glasses. Drinks straight from the bottle What do you think of the new hunk in our office? Well, he dresses well. Yes. And quickly too! A young woman looking very pregnant staggered into the maternity ward.she grabbed a nursing sister and demanded immediate attention. :Ah, said the sister, due are you? No. Church of England. The biological urge of the camel Is stranger than anyone thinks. For when he returns from the desert He makes an attack on the Sphinx. But the Sphinx s essential equipment Is buried far under the Nile. Which may explain the hump on the camel And the Sphinx s inscrutable smile. Rotator April 16 7
