Page 4 PAST EVENTS SATURDAY 9 th SEPTEMBER SUPERCHEAP DISPLAY We only had space for 6, but we managed to squeeze 7 in! As it happened we had five Fords and only two examples of fine British technology. I suppose it goes to show that some makes of vehicle are more in need of Supercheap parts than others! The shoppers at Supercheap showed a lot of interest in the vehicles so this can be regarded as a very worthwhile exercise and Supercheap has given the Club a Trade Discount membership! See Bruce Danson for details of when and how this concession can be accessed. SUNDAY 17 th SEPTEMBER NARROMINE The Iris Farm wasn t going to be ready until at least the October Long Weekend so we decided to give it a miss and go straight to Narromine Air Museum with a short stop at the Peak Hill Lolly Shop. 8 cars left Parkes at 9,30am, and because of the short stop in Peak Hill, arrived at Narromine Aero Club at 12 noon for lunch.
Page 5 After lunch we discovered the significant heritage impact that Narromine has in Australian Aviation, and it is being well cared for and promoted within the Air Museum, which had a major and impressive upgrade in Narromine is now Australia s oldest regional Aero Club. In 1920, locals gathered in thousands to see the Vickers Vimy bomber, winner of the England Australia air race, touch down. In the barnstorming 20 s and 30 s, Narromine hosted famous visitors such as Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Sir Alan Cobham, Arthur Butler, Jean Batten, and Sir Francis Chichester. It hosted the Mosquito bomber men of the RAF top secret 618 Squadron, and the RAAF 93 Squadron of Beaufighters. Pride of place is the replica Wright Flyer, together with some of the forms made (from copies of the original plans) in reconstructing the craft. Above is a restored Corben Super Ace, a homebuilt sports plane of There s also an impressive display of photographs and history relating to aviation in Narromine. Left is a commemoration of the Qantas Lounge. In the past, when airliners from overseas were delayed entry to Sydney, they landed at Narromine, rather than risk running out of fuel flying circuits waiting to get into Mascot. So Narromine had a Qantas Lounge! Connie the Super Constellation frequently visits Narromine. A worthwhile visit!
Page 6 SATURDAY 23 rd SEPTEMBER REGIONAL BUSKING CHAMPIONSHIPS PEAK HILL Only 3 cars ventured into this event, probably because others were either: exhausted from recent outings, or: unsure of what may lie in store. The area of the region was not obvious, but there were some buskers who were known as local to Parkes Shire, and others. A wide range of talent from those who may well have been entering their first competition to more seasoned performers. There were some very young talents (possibly still Primary School age) who bravely entered the public arena and gave it their best shot. All appeared to be encouraged by the presence of a (small) audience. I reckon it turned out to be a relaxing and enjoyable day, and hopefully encouraging to the contestants. SUNDAY 1 st OCTOBER FORBES MOTOR SHOW A great recovery from last year, when floodwaters caused the show to be cancelled. An excellent range of vehicles ranging from 1902 to the present, and fresh from the shed to specialized high quality custom Overland 30cwt truck Count the plug leads on this Mini to see why the seat is set back! The owner of this post vintage Chrysler Plymouth had been trying to find out why there was a push pull switch on the back. In NSW, until the early 1950 s when rear reflectors became compulsory, tail lights had to be turned on when the vehicle was parked on the road at night. Because most vehicles had 6v systems and parking lights on the same circuit as the tail light, the latter was often independently switched with an aftermarket switch located on or near the tail light, primarily to conserve battery life.
Page 7 Vanguard Spacemaster with all the 1950 s holiday gear. EH S4. Only 10 of the 120 built are known to survive. But whichever way you looked at us, we looked pretty good! 30 th SEPT 2 nd OCT PARKES BIKE RALLY It looked like every man and his dog was going to be there
Page 8 And with no bonnets to lift, people did the next best thing Attendance was up a bit on last year, with the usual variety of machines entered. Feedback from entrants has been very positive, and congratulations must go to Bruce and his band of helpers for a job well done. The day out starts at 11.00am and runs until 3.00pm. There ll be face painting, Jumping Castle, the Snake Man, and many other things, including US! All we need to do is to have a few cars for them to look at, be on hand to talk about our cars, and if you don t have a car for them to talk about, tell them about some of the exhibits in the Museum. Members will be able to take the children for a short ride in their car, should they so desire. Information Centre staff will be warning parents that most of our vehicles don t have seat belts (or child restraints for the littlies), and will be collecting a small donation (to defray out of pocket expenses) from those who wish to ride. Best to assemble at HPC from 10.30am. Those who are happy to provide rides should park on the bitumen car park and those who prefer to just talk about their vehicles should park on the grass in an area to be defined. The Club will provide a sausage sizzle lunch for members attending. For those who are concerned about where our future members may come from, this is a good starting point!
Page 9 SATURDAY 14 th OCTOBER PARKES SWAP AND CENTRAL WEST SHOW N SHINE Phil, Bruce and Tony reckon they ve just about locked everything in, and all looks set for a great day. Final details and rosters will be sorted at the coming meeting, together with working bees to erect security fencing and other bits of infrastructure on Friday prior to the Swap, and take it down afterwards. Think carefully about when you may be able to help, and in what capacity. There will be only two gates this year, the main gate being that straight off the end of Victoria Street and adjacent to Spicer Oval. The other gate will be next to the amenities block on the eastern side of our site. We ll not have an entry near the main driveway into Pioneer Oval There will be a Club Site where members can place items for sale, with the price clearly marked. A roster of members willing to man this site will also be arranged. Be prepared when Phil asks for names at the coming meeting!. Don t forget that the Central West Club will be conducting its Show and Shine on Pioneer Oval. Conducting these two activities together provides benefits to both Clubs, so it is important that we present as large a display of our vehicles as possible. *Please note that all entrants must arrive at the show n shine ground between 7.30 am and 9.00 am and no vehicle is to leave before 2.30 pm SATURDAY 28 th OCTOBER CHMC HALF YEARLY MEETING MUDGEE Although the Club will have only one voting Delegate, attendance by other interested members is encouraged. There s not only the opportunity to hear CHMC in action, but also the chance to establish or renew acquaintances within the Heritage Vehicle movement. The cost for Lunch will be $15.00, and names must be in to Secretary me before Friday 13 th October. SATURDAY 28 th OCTOBER CHMC REGISTRATION INFORMATION SESSION MUDGEE And of equal significance, immediately following the CHMC Mid Term meeting will be an information session on Conditional Registration; both Historic (HVS) and Classic (CVS), This session is very highly recommended for Club Registrars, Club Eligibility Committee members, and anybody who wants to catch up on the latest regarding Conditional Registration. Why don t we front up with a carload? END OF CURRENT CLUB YEAR As the 2017 Club year draws to a close (it finishes on 30 th October!) there are a few things we need to think about: Financial accounting; Treasurer Phil tries his best to have the books audited before the Annual General Meeting. This gives just 8 days from the end of Club Financial Year. If any member is holding any invoice for club expenditure, please get it to Phil ASP to give him the best chance to fudge have the books ready for audit. Please try to not leave handing in any invoices until the death knock. Note that the Tax Invoice is the primary document used for audit. Should you obtain any goods or services on behalf of the Club, it is essential that the Tax Invoice be given to Treasurer Phil ASP. Medlyn Trophy: The Medlyn trophy is awarded each year for participation in club Activities. The principle measure is the attendance record kept by Club Attendance Registrar, Margie Gould. Not everybody can get to every Club activity (in fact I doubt that anybody has!), and Margie is no exception. It is therefore incumbent on all members to ensure that Margie is aware of your contribution towards the Club. If you suspect that your attendance at any activity may have been overlooked, please contact Margie and she will ensure that the attendances are recorded accurately. Annual General Meeting This follows immediately after the November Meeting. It is an opportunity for the Club to review where it has been, what has been good about that, what lessons can be gleaned from our past performance, and where the Club wants to head in the near and distant future. I don t think that any of the Club s office bearers are so protective of their positions that they would slash their wrists if another member nominated against them in the coming elections. It would be great for a number of positions to be contested for a change. However, it is most important that members with good ideas or a desire to lead members in any activity put their names for consideration as one of the incoming Officers. It is not essential that a member be super skilled or infallible to be an Office Bearer. Our present Officers are a good testament to that, and know full well that most of our members tolerate the odd error or omission without too much drama. We are all human beings after all. Sitting alone wondering whether the Club would be better off if it did things differently won t achieve much. Getting involved by helping to run the Club will!
Page 10 Restorations; Badges are presented to members who have completed a restoration (as distinct from making a purchase and giving it a bit of a freshen up with Repo) during the year. The restoration may be of a car, truck, bike, tractor or small motor. If you have completed such a project, please provide the details to the Secretary before the Annual General Meeting. The award is engraved with the members name and vehicle make, model and year, so it is important that the Secretary has these details accurately. Conditional Registration: Vehicles registered under the Conditional Historic Registration Scheme (club plates) must be inspected by Club Inspectors, even if inspected elsewhere, such as at an RMS Authorised Inspection Station. Club Inspectors have an additional obligation to ensure that vehicles presented for Conditional Historic Registration are as original as possible, with period accessories (not period modifications). RMS only permits modern finishes (such as acrylic paint), trafficators, safety belts and electrical upgrades. Vehicle Inspection is a valuable service provided by our voluntary Inspectors, and the advice they give is intended to be in the best interests of both the vehicle owner and the Club as a whole. Please make their job easier by doing your bit to check your vehicle beforehand, particularly if your vehicle had an area of weakness pointed out last year. Don t put our voluntary inspectors in the embarrassing position of having to recommend that your vehicle be knocked back because you didn t fix up something obvious, or not attended to something they have previously drawn to your attention! MOTORING LIBRARY: The Club has acquired, through the generosity of Australian Motorlife Museum, library shelving and 21 cartons of valuable motoring books. There are many more cartons of books to follow over the next few months. The space in the Club Meeting Room that we intended to utilise presents some issues related to its use as a library, as does how we could manage such a valuable motoring resource. Expect some discussion on this at the next meeting.
