2 Dear Yale Traveler Designed by and for Yale Alumni, you are invited to join us on a unique 21 day Tour of the British Isles in September of This is a repeat of the very successful Yale Alumni British Isles Tour which guided 40 Yale 1963 colleagues, spouses and partners around the British Isles for 20 days in It features the best proven aspects of that tour including: good communications, tours led by local knowledgeable guides, a shared comfortable coach for convenient transport, Superior First Class hotels, fine dining preceded by generous social hour cocktail parties, special receptions, progression at a relaxed pace, and encouragement of comfortable sharing and intimacy between all of us. The tour will be co-led by Yale Emeritus history professor Jay Winter, and Jon Larson, Yale 63. We will be accompanied and guided by local professional tour guides. An experienced professional tour guide will accompany us throughout the tour. The tour features six full days in London, 13 days London to London through England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, and a two day tour of the English Lake District. The total cost is $12,950 per person double occupancy for the 21 days. This price includes full travel insurance for the land portion through our group insurance agent. He joined the Yale faculty in 2001 after many years of teaching modern history at Cambridge University in England where he was a Fellow of Pembroke College. He is the author of Sites of Memory, Sites of Mourning: The Great War in European Cultural History, and with Jean-Louis Robert, he directed the collective which produced Capital Cities at War: Paris, London, Berlin He won the Emmy Award for best television series of the year as co-producer, writer and chief historian of the BBC television series: The Great War and the Shaping of the Twentieth Century, first broadcast in 1996, and shown in 27 countries. Married to a French woman and residing part of the year in Paris, Professor Winter has a deep love for British and French culture. Join the group at 4PM EST for a pre-trip welcome call with the professor and tour director to learn more about what to expect. TRAVEL DAY Tuesday, September 12 Depart U.S. Most flights are overnight. Depart U.S. afternoon. Lose a calendar day. Arrive morning to noon on the 13th. ARRIVE IN Wednesday, September 13 Arrive London Heathrow typically in the morning. Check into the Park Plaza Westminster hotel in London. Afternoon free to relax/start your own exploration of London on a hop-on/off bus. Welcome cocktails followed by dinner on your own. to LAKE DISTRICT Thursday, September 14 Take a two hour comfortable train north from London through the beautiful countryside to Oxenholme. Guided tour of the area including the Hill Top home of Beatrix Potter and the lovely Lakeland village of Hawkshead. Check into the historic MacDonald Old England Hotel and Spa. Cocktails followed by dinner in the restaurant with beautiful views of Lake Windermere. (B, D) LAKE DISTRICT to Friday, September 15 Take an all-day guided mini-van tour of the many lakes and sights of the area. Visit the home of William Wadsworth. Enjoy an Ullswater Lake steamer cruise. Return direct to London via a late afternoon high speed train. (B,D) DUBLIN Tuesday, September 26 Get an overview of Ireland s capital as you drive to statue-lined O Connell Street, elegant Georgian squares, St. Patrick s Cathedral, and Oscar Wilde s Trinity College. Wednesday, September 27 Malahide Castle, set in 250 acres of park land and formerly both fortress and private home of the Talbot family for nearly 800 years. In Old Town, drive up the narrow Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, then explore HolyRood Palace. Tour of Glenkinchie Distillery and the Royal Yacht Britannia. (B,D) EDINBURGH to YORK Saturday, September 30 Private demonstration of sheep herding by special working border collies at Carcant Farm in the Moorfoot Hills. Continue on to York, England s most complete medieval city. Experience York Minster and follow our Tour Director through a maze of quaint Shambles streets. (B,D) STRATFORD-UPON-AVON Sunday, October 1 In Coventry, view the splendid modern cathedral that arose from the rubble of severe World War II bombings. Then on to Stratfordupon-Avon. View Anne Hathaway s Cottage, visit Shakespeare s birthplace, and enjoy a Shakespeare play. (B,D) AVON to Monday, October 2 Guided tour of magnificent Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Return to London in the late afternoon. Farewell cocktail party.
