Alternatively a printable version of the form can be downloaded from the club website ( or Four Wheel Drive Vic. website ( org.au). All other forms for trip leaders and guests can be downloaded from the club website ( or FWDV website ( If you have any ideas about a trip and/or questions speak with the Trip Coordinator (trips@nissan4x4vic.com.au) or any of the committee members. Submitting a Trip Report I have recently had members ask me how to write a trip report. As trip reports are a fundamental part of the magazine, it s great when members want to share their interesting experiences with the club community. The general rule of thumb when submitting a report is to provide as much relevant information as possible. For example: When I receive your details I will create a proof of your report and send it to you for changes or approval. When you write your report, do it from your perspective, how you experienced the trip from start to finish. I find it helpful to Specify whether its Club or Personnel Trip. Trip name and date. Participants on Trip. Photos. Trip report text. Selfie or avatar if you perfer. look at the map or GPS file as well as photos to jog those memories. When I receive your draft I will create a proof and send it to back to you to make changes if necessary. Hope this helps to get those reports in. Cheers. Heath. Thanks I would like to thank Niss4x4 Auto Spares for supplying me with all the parts I needed to get my 4x4 running happy again. They also gave me an awesome discount. Thanks. 13 Lost Tracks - Part 4 THE STORY OF HOPE TRACK. Just 10 years post World War II, Victoria and the rest of the country, was in a major re-build, revamp of infrastructure mode which required vast quantities of building grade hardwoods for construction projects throughout the country. The Forests Commission of Victoria was created to be the overarching government body responsible for obtaining, grading and on selling to mills to process into commercial lumber. Foresters were sent far and wide into every nook, cranny, valley and rift to seek out and earmark mill tree s for harvest. Once time came to remove those trees, they were also responsible for putting in access tracks to reach that timber. Forestry tracks and snigs now make up most of the track network that we utilise for our driving based recreation. That and access that would also evolve from the management of forest fires and today s back-burning fuel reduction programs. My family were sleeper cutters, a job which involved selecting tree s, felling them and then cutting railway sleepers from the felled tree. They earned their living from cutting sleepers from River Red gums in the Barmah forest. Part of the art was to be able to size up a tree and accurately predict how many railway sleepers the tree would yeld. But I digress somewhat. Foresters in the high-country could tell you how many super cubic feet of lumber they could extract from a given timber lot. The spin-off from the need to access this timber required the need for machine operators to cut and push access tracks to reach the timber. Given the operators skill and the limitations of the machines of the day, 1960 s and 1970 s technology, sometimes dictated where and how the track was cut in. You must keep in mind that the primary function of the track was to access the mill trees. The logs would be snigged, ie, pulled by chain and bulldozer to a point where they could be loaded (again by pushing with a dozer), onto trucks to deliver them to mills. So as long as the dozer could access the timber and snig them up to a road, that really was all that was needed. Constructing a track to enable a wheeled vehicle to traverse it was not a driving fundamental. Consequently, many such tracks were cut onto gradients and side angles that were not ideal for wheeled vehicles and there certainly was no thought to how this newly cut ground would stand up to the ravishes of time and weather. All this was going on before our knowledge of soil erosion, water quality and environmental sustainability was known to the extent that it is today. A few of those tracks survived in my time and a few of those were so dangerous to drive, that they earned the title of widow-makers. These tracks were very, very steep, loose, eroded and to be honest, should not have been there for use. A few of them claimed lives, when vehicles got out of control and lost traction. A situation not helped by the vehicle technology of the time either. These widow-makers, to name a few: Trig Track (Aberfeldy), a couple of fatalities on that one, and today the alignment has been changed to do away with the dangerous parts; Black Soil Gully Track (Licola) from the Bull Plain road down the spur to the McCalister river at the Sister s, this used to head straight down the spur with no switch-backs, a couple killed on that one; The track behind the cemetery at Wonnangatta (although not technically a track), I know of three separate incidents where fatalities occurred; and then there is Hope Track which runs between the Big River road and Terrible track. Today it is re-aligned, but it used to simply head down the spur, short, steep, loose and almost impossible to drive. Unconfirmed fatality here also. Unfortunately, somebody had to give it a go. I can remember the windscreen frame of a Toyota FJ40 leaning up against a tree for years. Hope track. So named by the dozer driver who cut it, he hoped he d make the bottom without losing the machine on the way down. The machine was working higher up along Terrible for a couple of days, possibly tuning up some tracks which by now had become the responsibility of the Commission to maintain the main ones, when, I am told by a reliable ex-employee, the boss wanted the machine back at the depot ASAP. The operator, simply pointed the machine down the slope, dropped the blade and pushed a straight track down to the road in one go. Hoping he would come out on the road in one piece. The machine never ever got back there to close off the track or to re-align it. Hope track subsequently appeared on the next forestry maps and has existed ever since, although now not in its original alignment. I never drove the original track. I didn t have the nerve. And I doubt my old G60 Patrol would have climbed it anyhow. But I live to tell about it. Trickster. NISSAN NEWS JULY

20 Trip Report Grampians Drive Rock Art & Rugged Beauty 16th March 2018 Report By: Adam Webb Participants Adam, Melissa, Emma, Ivy & Abby Webb (TL) John Millane Greg Wiltshire (TEC) Patrol GU Patrol GU D-MAX The weekend kicked off from just outside Halls gap, we all made our way to Plantation camp ground 10ks outside of Hall Gaps on Mt Zero Road, worth a look for anyone heading out that way looking for a good free campground. There was around 30 large camping sites catering for tents through to camper trailers/small caravans. We woke to a few Kangaroos hopping around the campsite. After we all met up at camp on the Saturday morning we headed off through Halls Gap to tackle our first track into the national park camp for the Saturday Boreang Camping Area. Along the way John pulled over on the Grampians Rd to shuffle an Echidna off the road before it became roadkill. Needless to say, John felt the echidna s spines for the best part of the day after the good deed. Just shortly after turning onto the Victoria Valley Rd we came to our first Track the Henham Track. We aired down and headed into the national park. The track didn t disappoint, there was plenty of washouts to navigate and a few good drop-offs into the dry creek beds along the way. Would be a great challenge with a bit of water (add that one to the list.) the 33k track took up most of our morning and we rolled into camp around lunch to set up for the evening. After setting up camp we were keen for more, so we headed down the nearby Moora Track around to the Moora Moora Reservoir where the girls pleaded with us to swim, but the reservoir was a little dry and didn t look too inviting, great for a bit of a Kayak and fishing, not so much swimming around this time of year. So we continued to finish off the rest of the Moora Moora track, Along the way we came across a pretty large field of bee hives, I wasn t too keen to try and get any of the bush Honey but managed to snap a couple of pics before we continued on. The Moora Moora track was almost like were on the beach or trekking through the middle of a sandy island. Good boggy sand track for the most part with the odd Emu darting around to keep the kids entertained. 18 JULY 2018 NISSAN NEWS

21 We got back to camp just as the gusty wind and stormy clouds were rolling in. We all huddled under Greg s awning to share a few pre-dinner snacks and drinks before we lit the BBQ and had a bite to eat for dinner and a bit of yarn before we turned in. John had a little visit from a kangaroo keen for a bit of feed, they seem to be really tame around these parts. Overnight there was a good amount of rain and gusty wind to let us know it was definitely not Summer anymore. So, we woke early to a soggy camp to pack up. There was again plenty of Roos around which kept the girls entertained while we packed up camp ready for the day ahead. We headed around past the Lodge (no idea what that was, couldn t see any remanence of anything) down Syphon Rd with trailers in toe, the track was littered with Roos around the airstrip, to the point we had to slow down to a crawl to ensure we didn t hit any before we headed down or up the Goat Track. I was a bit nervous given this was really the first time pulling the camper around on true low range tracks and there was a few gnarly switch backs on the map that could have caused us a few issues. I now know why it is called the Goat track, there was some really good steep rocky tracks right on the side of the mountain as we climbed up. We managed to get to the top no worries, and the views were spectacular across the national park. As we treked around the top of the Mountain there were some really interesting rock formations so we stopped for a few drive by photos to take in the scenes around the track. As we came over the top and started to head down the mountain I pulled over laughing, in the middle of nowhere there is a speed hump sign???? WT!! Nice view but we couldn t see the speed hump so I am not sure what the purpose of the sign was. Never the less we snaked back down the mountain before we came to the last stop in the national park, just past the Buandik camp ground was the Billimina Shelter where there was some pretty interesting aboriginal artwork at the end of a kilometre walk. After the artwork and some morning tea we headed back towards Halls Gap to wrap up the trip and air up before the blacktop back to Melbourne. Then came another good deed by John who helped keep me on the go after my air filter choked the life out of the Patrol reducing me to a crawl on the last stretch of gravel before getting back on the Grampians Rd towards Halls Gap, needless to say there is now always a spare air filter in the back of the wagon, ready to go. Thanks to everyone for coming along it was a great little weekend, next time we will have to take a couple of more days to explore the many more tracks on offer. Cheers Adam NISSAN NEWS JULY

Recently there have been two occasions where we have required this. Once to change our Web provider over and a 2 nd time to open additional bank account. The Secretary advises that 3 attempts to do this in the past have been in vain and it requires a formal request from the Club Committee to do so as the existing records have contact details that are unknown to us. The President is therefore formally requesting the Secretary Leigh Williams to make a request in writing to the CAV to obtain this certificate. This was seconded by Josh Doble. We have previously discussed sending out the Pros and Cons of introducing some reimbursements to club members who are regularly out of pocket with what are effectively compulsory expenses. A document was created as a result of and agreement to at the last committee meeting. Visitors to the meeting suggested that it would be more appropriate to have a discussion over these items at the next GM. It was decided to proceed as originally planned. GENERAL BUSINESS Alan McCabe introduced the concept of building a HQ for the club in Melbourne. He believes the Club needs a good long term project to work on. As this is a major project the Committee has asked Alan to talk to the general membership at the October. Gives us the chance to advertise this. Mike July Aug Sept. apology There being no further discussion the meeting concluded at 2230hrs. Next meeting 18 th July NISSAN NEWS JULY
