3 Marshalls range of traffic calming systems can be adapted to any techniques used, either traditional or modern shared space. They are designed to improve environments for vehicular and pedestrian traffic through implementation of proactive traffic management solutions. Marshalls traffic calming products are aesthetically pleasing and proven in use for a variety of applications, ranging from Homezones and adoptable estate roads to highways, either new or existing. The accurate preformed shapes and profiles of Marshalls traffic management products, produced by quality controlled manufacturing processes, ensure compliance to standards and specifications. Legislation The accurate preformed shapes and profiles of Marshalls traffic management products, produced by quality controlled manufacturing processes, ensure compliance to standards and specifications No 1025: Highways, England and Wales. The Highways (Road Hump) Regulations No 1026: Highways, England and Wales. The Highways (Traffic Calming) Regulations 2000 Traffic Advisory Leaflet 11/94: Regulations Scotland Manual Handling Operation Regulations 1992 Manual for Streets 1 and 2 BS EN 1339:2003 (paving) The Disabled Persons Act 1981 (paving) Department for Transport (DfT): 7/94, Thermoplastic road humps Traffic calming is the employment of techniques intended to reduce the negative impacts of motor vehicles on neighbourhoods by reducing vehicle speeds and by providing safe spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Each traffic calming device has appropriate applications, addresses one or more of the objectives and has disadvantages or negative impacts on high vehicle speeds. Trial and error could be necessary when reviewing implementation of a traffic calming method, in order to assess and address the issues of vehicle speed, safety and quality of life in home zones as well as in public spaces such as rail stations, schools and streets in a correct and safe approach. All developed countries use traffic calming techniques to manage vehicular speeds. Their strategy is to put at the forefront pedestrians and cyclists and minimise the dominance of vehicles in the streets and creating better townscapes. EU countries that adopt this strategy include Denmark, Holland and Germany by implementing a mixture of traditional techniques into modern spaces, blending them seamlessly within the surroundings. In Britain, the measures mostly employed to tackle high speeds in key routes and highways are traffic lights and signals, speed detection cameras and some traffic calming measures such as speed cushions and traffic islands. Other means of traffic calming implementation are pedestrian railguarding, rumble strips and build-outs which are mostly used in side roads and rural areas. Different colour co-ordinations and road designs add a more vibrant and lively character to each city, giving it a distinct appearance while keeping its dwellers safe. Local Transport Note (LTN): 01/07, 01/08 Traffic Management and Streetscape, LTN 01/12 Shared Use Routs for Pedestrians and Cyclists, 02/09 Pedestrian Guardrailing Traffic Advisory Leaflet (TAL): 87/04 Traffic calming on Trunk Roads, 01/11 Vehicle Security Barriers within the Streetscape, 01/00 Traffic Calming in villages on major roads, 01/04 Village Speed Limits, 01/05 Rumblewave Surfacing, 01/96 Traffic management in historic areas, 02/96 75mm High Road Humps, 03/91 Speed Control Humps, 04/90 Tactile Markings for Segregated shared use, 04/94 Speed Cushions, 04/97 Rising Bollards, 07/93 Regulations, 07/95 Traffic Islands for speed control, 07/96 Highways (Road humps) Regulations 1996, 08/96 Road humps and groundborne vibrations, 09/94 Horizontal Designing the ideal streetscape A forward-thinking re-design of the existing streetscape can lead to de-cluttered, modern streets that meet the needs of residents and children, pedestrians and cyclists by creating an infrastructure that will be: Safe for all users, from children to the elderly Convenient by being part of the main road network, continuous and logical, connecting residents to places such as work, education and leisure without any effort while saving them time and distance Comfortable to use by employing high quality materials and maintaining all roads Attractive to all users regardless of age or gender To achieve these, both traditional and modern techniques can be employed, calming traffic in areas where non-vehicle users live in abundance. Aiming for adequate and safe transportation provided from home zones to all key routes and back is ideal for a city to flourish; roads which are reliable and comfortable to drive on must connect residential developments with the city centre, main business offices and educational institutes as well as retail and leisure locations. Consequently, by designing safer routes to work, school and leisure, there will be: A reduction in road casualties as well as air and noise pollution, minimising the impact that vehicles have on the environment and give a better quality of life for all area residents and users An encouragement for more sustainable and healthy travel behaviours such as cycling and walking, which can assist in tackling the soaring obesity levels from a young age A new high quality, high frequency public transport system can add value to the area and encourage sustainable travelling as well as health patterns A rise in passenger satisfaction and user experience which can lead to economic regeneration of the area and even of the vicinity.
