2 RAILWAY IN WARTIME Welcome to the 25th Railway in Wartime event. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and its volunteers hope that all visitors, re-enactors and local businesses enjoy one of the railways most popular events. Relive the amazing spirit and camaraderie of World War II and enjoy the various re-enactments, entertainment and vehicle displays along the line at Pickering, Le Visham, Goathland and Grosmont Stations. Along the line of the heritage railway the clock has been turned back to when Britain was in the midst of a world war. Each station has been transformed to create a variety of scenarios including child evacuees and a cinema showing films and newsreels from the period at Pickering, Home Guard demonstrations at Goathland, with music and dance entertainment at Grosmont. Levisham has once again been transformed into the German-occupied French village of Le Visham with re-enactment displays and Café du Bois. Wreath-laying ceremonies at Pickering and Grosmont stations help to underpin a serious message over the weekend. Following feedback received in 2016 we have reintroduced the vehicle parades for this year. There will be a Foot Parade followed by a Military Vehicle Parade on the Saturday and a Civilian Vehicle Parade on the Sunday. See page 22 for full details. Pickering Station Car Park has been recreated in to The Sidings wartime street which includes Joan s wartime hair salon, wartime traders and live entertainment including singer, Paul Harper. We are also delighted to announce that Ampleforth College Swing Band which will be playing a repertoire of music from the 1930s and 1940s on Sunday afternoon. 6 LE VISHAM Wurzburg!! Levisham station is converted for the weekend in to a continental (French) railway station in the year During this period in the history of France, the German occupiers historically employed many means to defend the Atlantic coast from air attack. A little known fact is that the Germans had employed quite sophisticated Radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging) systems since before the outbreak of WWII. The premise of this year s scenario is to display a replica Radar and anti-aircraft battery typical of the period. Our replica Messerschmitt will be back, providing a reminder of how Luftwaffe air and ground units need to work together to maintain clear, safe skies! Protection for the station and the battery, a typical target for commando raids sent from Britain, will be provided by a single platoon of the German Wehrmacht, who will perform checks and patrols. In turn to ensure the soldiers behave, Military Police (Feldgendarmarie) will be keeping an eye on them for any problems! Additionally our occupiers will be providing living history and firing displays featuring a variety of small arms and heavy weapons. (This will include pyrotechnics and blank ammunition which are sometimes quite loud). The various displays and demonstrations will run continuously throughout the weekend. As in previous years, the station will have musical entertainment and French food and drink at the Café du Bois, along with traditional snacks, hot & cold drinks supplied by the stations permanent outlets of the Weighbridge Tea Hut and Paddock Refreshment hut. 06 RAILWAY IN WARTIME

7 GOATHLAND Friday,Saturday & Sunday Wartime Trade Stalls, Including 40s hair styling and hats, clothing and militaria. Display of agricultural equipment of the era. The Auxiliary Commando Airborne will also be setting up camp during the day. Saturday & Sunday Pontefract Home Guard will be protecting the station with an HQ at the station entrance. Both afternoons the Home Guard will deal with the aftermath of an air raid, and will hunt German airmen. North East Military Vehicle Club will have Allied vehicles on display and a soup kitchen to feed the troops. (Soup Kitchen does not provide food for public). RAF (and other forces) camp with weapons display. Musical entertainment with Dickie Lines outside the Tea Room. Ministry of Food instructive demonstrations on how to make best use of the food available. Washday and Make Do and Mend Display. Everyday life before the invention of washing machines. A miner will tell of the story of the Bevin Boys. Auxiliary Commando Airborne will have an encampment (behind the Tank House) with various training displays, including bayonet practice, bomb disposal, battle training, and a patrol into the village. There will also be a Russian Filed Hospital team. To supplement the ever popular Wartime Tea Room will be a bar in the Waiting Room dispensing beers from the Great Yorkshire Brewery along with snacks and sandwiches. In Goathland village, shops & pub will be decorated in 40s style. US forces will be camped at the Inn on the Moor. NYMR.CO.UK 07

12 GROSMONT BUSINESS GROUP IS A FIGHTING FORCE! The Grosmont Information Group was formed by local businesses to promote the village of Grosmont and its environs. The Group consists of around a dozen local businesses and individuals who are passionate about Grosmont and wish to see its many attractions fully utilised. 14 Dame Vera Lynn The NYMR is home to a rather special steam locomotive, WD Dame Vera Lynn. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, 1944, for use by the British Army, she saw service in Egypt during the Second World War. Later she was sold to the Hellenic State Railways in Greece and based at Thessaloniki until being finally withdrawn in She was repatriated in 1984, and was named Dame Vera Lynn by the Dame herself on 6th August The loco was then purchased for the NYMR and came to us in During her 10 years of service she clocked up some 108,000 miles before being withdrawn for overhaul in November A team of volunteers have now been formed to commence the overhaul of the loco but after many years in the open air we need 600,000 to complete the job. The loco and her namesake have both played their part in the war effort and it is now time to pay something back and return the loco, to service and in so doing honour them both for their wartime contributions. 22 Map of the Parade The Foot Parade followed by a Military Vehicle Parade will take place on Saturday and a Civilian Vehicle Parade will take place on Sunday. Road closures in Pickering on Saturday and Sunday are: Park Street 9am - 4pm and Market Place 9am - 6pm. There will be no vehicle movements through the closures between these times other than for the parades. If you have registered a vehicle, and are in possession of a colour coded parking pass, please ensure that your vehicle is in the allocated area before the road closures take effect. Saturday The foot parade forms up at Pickering Junior School, Middleton Road and will take the following route: Middleton Road / Potter Hill, pausing at the Memorial Hall in remembrance / Bridge St / Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill, terminating on Hallgarth. The military vehicle parade will form up on Park St from 9am, setting off after the foot parade up Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill / Hungate / The Ropery and back up Market Place for a second loop, falling out on The Ropery on the second visit. Sunday The civilian vehicle parade will also follow the route of the military vehicle parade: departing Park Street / Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill / Hungate / The Ropery and back up Market Place for a second loop, falling out on The Ropery on the second visit.
