2 Welcome to the 26th Railway in Wartime event. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and its volunteers hope that all visitors, re-enactors and local businesses enjoy one of the railways most popular events. Over the three-day event families can hop on board steam and heritage diesel trains and relive the amazing spirit and camaraderie of World War II, whilst enjoying various war-themed entertainment and vehicle displays at stations along the iconic North Yorkshire Moors Railway line. Each station has been transformed to create a variety of scenarios and performances including a wartime street, The Sidings, at Pickering, Home Guard demonstrations at Goathland and RAF themed Grosmont. New for 2018, Levisham station is celebrating Victory in Europe! Including a 1940s style show band, music acts and much more. Our wreath laying ceremonies at Pickering and Grosmont stations help to underpin a serious message over the weekend. Our very popular Pickering Town parades are back again this year, with a Foot Parade followed by a Military Vehicle Parade on the Saturday and Foot March and Civilian Vehicle Parade on the Sunday. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the re-enactors, volunteers, Pickering in Business, Ryedale Council and members of the public for your continued support. 3 Pickering Town Street Parades SATURDAY: Foot & Military Vehicle Parade from 10:30. SUNDAY: Military Foot March & Civilian Vehicle Parade from 9:30. NYMR.CO.UK 03

4 Map of the Parades BURGATE The Foot Parade followed by a Military Vehicle Parade will take place on Saturday and a Military Foot March followed by the Civilian Vehicle Parade will take place on Sunday. KEY VIEWING AREAS SATURDAY: Foot & Military Vehicle Parade from 10:30. Saturday The foot parade forms up at Pickering Junior School, Middleton Road and will take the following route: Middleton Road / Potter Hill, pausing at the Memorial Hall in remembrance / Bridge St / Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill, terminating on Hallgarth. The military vehicle parade will form up on Park St from 9am, setting off after the foot parade up Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill / Hungate / The Ropery and back up Market Place for a second loop, falling out on The Ropery on the second visit. SUNDAY: Military Foot March & Civilian Vehicle Parade from 9:30. Sunday The Military Foot March departs from Burgate, heads down The Market Place, bearing right on to Park St. before ending in The Sidings. Sunday The civilian vehicle parade will also follow the route of the military vehicle parade: departing Park Street / Market Place / Birdgate / Smiddy Hill / Hungate / The Ropery and back up Market Place for a second loop, falling out on The Ropery on the second visit. Blitz & Pieces: Auxiliary Fire Service and Home Front. Operation Fortitude: How Britain fooled the Germans before D-Day. New for 2018: From Steam, Speed & Sumptuous Dining to Tracks into the Trenches: A beautiful and emotive audio-visual experience commemorating the centenary of the end of World War One to be held in the Atkins Building. NAAFI: Coffees, teas and snacks. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-16:00. The Sidings Inn: Pop-up pub and music hall. Open Friday 11:00 19:00, Saturday 11:00 23:00 and Sunday 11:00 17:00. 6 PICKERING Friday 9:53, 10:28 and 11:08 Evacuees leave Pickering Station. 11:30 Flag raising ceremony on Platform One. 12:45 Ricky Hunter performs at Mulberries Terrace. 17:00 Hattie Bee sings in the Sidings Inn. Throughout the day many of the vehicles, displays and re-enactors arrive. In the afternoon Royal Navy Ratings have a sing-a-long at the Sidings Inn. Saturday 11:00 Parade of re-enactors and military vehicles. 11:15 Ricky Hunter performs at Mulberries Terrace. 12:00 The launching of the LDV (Home Guard) scenario in Park Street. Followed by a march to the Sidings for recruits to sign up. 13:30 Splice the mainbrace with the Royal Navy (Sidings Bandstand). 15:00 Queen and Princess Elizabeth inspect the Home Guard (Sidings Bandstand). See the Royals arrive by car and learn about the Home Guard. 15:30 Wartime sing-a-long and show in the Sidings. The Big Night Out Relive wartime camaraderie with great music from Amanda Beaumont, Hattie Bee and Ricky Hunter from 19:00 in the Sidings Inn cocktail lounge, whilst enjoying a fish and chip supper. 06 RAILWAY IN WARTIME

7 From Speed, Steam & Sumptuous Dining ing to Tracks into the Trenches Commemorating the centenary at the end of World War One, the London North East Railway Coach Association (LNERCA), presents a beautiful and emotive audio-visual experience. Housed in an original WW1 dining car under restoration, this exhibition combines a commissioned audio soundscape with evocative pencil illustrations by artist Max Hirst. Visit the Sidings this Railway in Wartime which cleverly merges the factual story behind the design of this beautifully ornate and unique Victorian/Edwardian coach with the fictional tale of Sam Nipper Perkins, on board Pantry Boy and WW1 Soldier. Exhibition includes real life testimonies from members of the NEW Battalion. Please note that unfortunately, due to the age of the coach, there is no wheelchair access. NYMR.CO.UK 07

11 LEVISHAM Celebrate a Victory in Europe New for Levisham station will see a celebration of Victory in Europe which will include 1940s style show bands, music acts and much more. Acts for this year s event include: Kitty LaMare, The Daisy Belles, Fiona Harrison and Five Star Swing. 1940s Five Star Swing was especially selected for the reunion party of the original TV cast of Dad s Army, Churchill War Rooms, Westminster Palace, Imperial War Museum and H.M. The Treasury! The G.I musicians plus Simone as Vera Lynn will get you IN THE MOOD with the exciting vintage sounds of the 1940s Additionally, you will be able to dine in the British Restaurant accompanied by live music from Luna Nightingale. Based on a national wartime initiative set up by Mrs Flora Solomon, who "pioneered the development of the staff welfare system" for Leeds-born retailer Marks and Spencer. 12 GOATHLAND Be transported back to 1940s Goathland Station, heart of rural Yorkshire which shows the importance of the North York Moors agricultural landscape during the war. Friday,Saturday&Sunday DISPLAYS AND TRADE STALLS 40s hair styling and hats, clothing and militaria. Displays of agricultural equipment of the era. Field Kitchen to feed the troops (This display will not provide food for the public). The Auxiliary Commando Airborne will be setting up camp for the day. 13 GOATHLAND Saturday & Sunday Pontefract Home Guard will be protecting the station with an HQ at the station entrance. Both afternoons the Home Guard will deal with the aftermath of an air raid, along with other scenarios. North East Military Vehicle Club will have Allied vehicles on display. Musical entertainment with Dickie Lines outside the Tea Room. Fully equipped and occupied Anderson Shelter. Washday and Make Do and Mend display. Listen to a wartime Miner who will tell the story of the Bevin Boys. Auxiliary Commando Airborne will have an encampment (behind the Tank House) with various training displays. Visit the Waiting Room bar which will be dispensing ales from the Great Yorkshire Brewery and Breworks along with food. In Goathland Village, shops and the Goathland Hotel will be decorated in the 1940s style. US forces will be billeted at the Inn on the Moor. NYMR.CO.UK 13

15 RAF GROSMONT All Weekend Explore RAF Grosmont, which showcases the importance of the RAF during WWII. On 1 April 2018, the Royal Air Force celebrated its 100th birthday. To mark this occasion Grosmont will have the RAF Battle of Britain MK2 Spitfire on display, plus RAF Plotting Room in operation with demonstrations. Locomotive number 6 Douglas from the Talyllyn Railway (which is also an ex RAF engine and painted in RAF plant blue to mark the centenary) will form part of the shunting demonstrations between Grosmont and Goathland Stations. RAF Battle of Britain MK2 Spitfire (arrival and setup late afternoon Friday). NAAFI (Station Tea Room) serving meals and refreshments. Marquee: RAF Plotting Room in operation with RAF Officer to speak to. RAF Battle of Britain Fighter Pilot's replica dispersal hut as used by RAF Battle of Britain Fighter Pilots awaiting Scramble. Ryedale branch of RAFA stand. JWO "Field" First Aid Post display. Visit the Soup Kitchen and join the queue to receive your wartime ration. Drum Head Service & Wreath Laying 11:50 Air Training Corps Band Standards (Cadets), Veterans, Re-enactors muster. 12:15 Parade march off to Drumhead service area in front of RAF Spitfire. March on the Standards: Redcar Royal British Legion, Naval, Army Regimental and RAF Association Standards. Drumhead altar to be constructed from the drums of the Air training Corps band.
