Hackney Council has also signed a partnership agreement with Austin, Texas, to build on collaboration between tech incubators in both cities, and between Austin s South By South West Interactive Festival and the Digital Shoreditch Festival. Shoreditch is a highly entrepreneurial and knowledge-based business community, with dozens of small enterprises based in the same buildings doing business on a global scale, and ably supported by a similarly burgeoning hospitality sector. A 1billion investment in the London A 1billion investment in the Lo Overground rail network has transformed Shoreditch s links to the rest of London, with a vastly improved service opening up ready access to the town centre for the whole region. Shoreditch has a long-standing, rich creative history, being on of Europe s main theatre districts in the late 16th century, home to the country s first, the Curtain, and also the Rose Theatre and the original Globe Theatre, and premiering plays by William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. Today, the Shoreditch town centre area is also Hackney s biggest employment centre, providing 30,000 jobs with thousands commuting in every day from around the borough and all over London. Hackney as a whole has seen 21% business growth since 2004, nearly double London s rate. This new activity is concentrated primarily in media, technology and consulting. Between 1994 and 2007, Hackney saw a 27% drop in VAT registered businesses in manufacturing. What grew up to fill the manufacturing workspace were creative and technology businesses, as well as fashion designers and artists. 3 WELCOME TO SHOREDITCH Right on the doorstep of the City, Shoreditch is one of London s most fashionable neighbourhoods. A run down area up until the 1990s, it is now the hub of creative and artistic talent for the capital, with international brand names such as Last.FM, Google and Moshi Monsters all based there, as well as being a highly desirable residential location. Shoreditch s renaissance was led by the influx of artists and designers looking for cheap live/work spaces close to the City and good transport links. The area then quickly became well known for art and nightlife, and when Jay Jopling opened up an outpost of the internationally-renowned White Cube gallery there in 2000, Shoreditch was placed firmly on the London cultural map. In recent years Shoreditch and neighbouring Hoxton have attracted more and more young creative professionals who have turned former warehouses into loft apartments and made Hoxton Square the centre of contemporary bohemia. This popular corner of London is now home to numerous art galleries, bars, restaurants and clubs and is very much the cutting edge of London contemporary life. Shoreditch has acted as a catalyst for regeneration, eneration, as companies and residents alike spread out over Hackney taking with them the fashions and creativity that the borough is now known for. The last few years have seen a huge influx of businesses being drawn to the neighbourhood. These have been from all industries, but predominantly from the creative and hospitality sectors. Shoreditch is home to the largest concentration of creative industries in Europe and has enough clubs, pubs and celebrity hangouts to rival the West End. It is also becoming famous for its quality cuisine and is the setting for Jamie Oliver s Fifteen restaurant and the Hoxton Apprentice, which are also both innovative social enterprises. 4 YOUR CUSTOMERS The median household income for Shoreditch is 34,320, compared with 21,949 in Newham, and households have a high average weekly expenditure and a preference for consumer goods. Commuters to the area make use of the Shoreditch High Street London Overground station, which sees 17,000 journeys each weekday, as well as Old Street Underground station, which in 2010 saw over 20million journeys. Shoreditch is Hackney s main employment centre, providing 30,000 jobs, and hosts the majority of employees in the creative and tech sectors as well as high street businesses. The knowledge economy is mainly self-employed; across the borough the number of people reporting to be their own boss increased by 4% in 2007 and has remained between 2% and 3% higher than the London average ever since. During 2010, 17% of Hackney residents were self-employed. Research commissioned by Hackney Council shows that Shoreditch is also within a pocket of households with a high level of preference for quality goods. Café culture in Shoreditch The employment base is wide, with financial services, advertising and market research, telecommunications, computer consulting, and management and legal consultancies included. Social work, education, cleaning companies, transport and licensed restaurants also provide a high number of jobs. There are scores of restaurants and bars in Shoreditch 4

6 6 Hackney Council is working with the Government in its Tech City initiative to support new businesses moving to the area, by providing practical help with business support, finding premises, and planning advice.

7 TECH CITY There are nearly 1,000 creative and digital businesses in Shoreditch, which has led to the area being hailed as Tech City, and Silicon Roundabout. Shoreditch is the hottest tech cluster in Europe with names such as Last.FM, Google, Songkick, and Moshi Monsters all based in the area, which also hosts London s biggest number of start-ups. These home-grown businesses span film production, design, advertising, online games, mobile apps, publishing, printing, and communications. It is an arts-led economy that has grown over the past 20 years, beginning with an influx of artists and designers into Shoreditch making use of affordable workspace and the City s good internet access. From the late 1990s, filmmakers and architects came into the area, which prompted an 81% increase in bars, restaurants and pubs over the next decade. The night time destinations of Shoreditch and Hoxton, combined with affordable office space, formed the foundation of the modern technology ecosystem. An agreement signed between Hackney and Austin, Texas, in January, 2012, builds on existing collaboration between Shoreditch s creative, tech and film industries and those in Austin. The Texan city also hosts the annual South By South West Interactive Festival, attracting tens of thousands of exhibitors and visitors, and worth over $200million to the local economy. The vision for the Digital Shoreditch Festival is to be as significant to the industry as its counterpart in the United States. Hackney Council is working with the Government in its Tech City initiative to support new businesses ses moving to the area, by providing practical help with orientation tours, business support, finding ng premises, and planning advice, as well as linking up companies and investors through the development of business associations and events. To promote the borough and local companies, Hackney Council, Digital Shoreditch and the Government s IC tomorrow agency launched Race for Apps in November 2011, a competition to crowdsource mobile apps for use by visitors to Hackney ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. An apprenticeship and work placement scheme is also being developed by companies to ensure local young people get an opportunity to join the industry. The Council is helping to set up visits by creative industry representatives to schools in the borough and to Hackney Community College, so that young people can learn how to run their own business and consider a career in the creative sector. The Tech City area stretches from Shoreditch to Dalston, and on to Hackney Wick where more than 600 creative businesses are based next to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. 8 Artsist s impressions of the proposed Nobu hotel HOTELS COMING TO SHOREDITCH With proposals from global household name Nobu to open one of its first hotels in Shoreditch, the area is now established as an international destination, with six more proposed hotels on their way. Nobu has received planning permission to develop a five-storey, 143-bedroom hotel in Willow Street, with a restaurant, bar and conference space, creating over 100 jobs. It will feature an exciting design in keeping with the creativity of Shoreditch, and a dramatic entranceway viewed from Great Eastern Street. A diamond-shaped, 24-storey hotel in City Road has received planning permission, for over 240 rooms, while a 135-room Bravo Hotel at Scrutton Street and Curtain Road received planning permission earlier in Currently there are also proposals for a low cost, boutique Pocket Hotel in Paul Street, with over 200 rooms. NIGHT TIME ECONOMY Shoreditch needs little introduction as one of London s thriving night time economy destinations, with its own scene of scores of bars, clubs, galleries, and cultural spaces offering a highly individual alternative to Soho, the West End, and central London. Licensed premises meet regularly with the police and Hackney Council officers to discuss forthcoming events and festivals, changes to regulations, and how best to improve the area collectively for local residents en and businesses as well l as night time economy visitors. 9 RETAIL AND FASHION Shoreditch has long been a loosely-kept secret as place to shop for a mix of fashionable, designer, vintage and wildly unique items. Boxpark, the world s first pop-up shopping mall, was opened in Shoreditch by Dizzee Rascal during late 2011, a mix of independent shops, galleries and cafes along with well known fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Diesel, Nike and Lacoste. Sixty refitted shipping containers transformed a derelict former railyard into a brand new, interim temporary high street for the area, with a lifespan of five years before the site is developed. In the wake of this success, international brands such as Christian Louboutin, Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood and Prada are now also exploring a move to the area. Start was founded a decade ago by husband and wife team Brix and Philip Start, and has now expanded to three stores offering top quality designer attire for men and women. A Child of the Jago, Great Eastern Street, is the creation of Agent Provocateur Joe Corre and Barnzley Armitage, composing antique clothing and artefacts with modern-day end of line fabrics, a uniqueness in keeping with the shop s Victorian inspiration. 11 CULTURAL CENTRE Shoreditch is home to an enormous number of arts, cultural, and creative organisations, as well as world-famous galleries such as the White Cube, in Hoxton Square, which features works by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Sam Taylor-Wood. The first Thursday of every month sees dozens of galleries, studios, museums and artist-run spaces in the area open late. Organised by the Whitechapel Gallery, First Thursdays feature performances, music, pop-up bars, private views, and art tours from leading curators, writers and art experts. Rivington Place, a RIBA award-winning building designed by David Adjaye OBE, opened in 2007, the first new-build public gallery in London since the Hayward Gallery opened 40 years earlier. It is dedicated to the display, debate and reflection of global diversity issues in the contemporary visual arts. An ongoing programme of exhibitions and events is produced and presented by Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) and Autograph ABP. The Silicon Drinkabout takes place on Friday evenings, an informal get-together for local startups, established through Twitter by social online gaming company and developer Mind Candy, which is also behind the international gaming sensation Moshi Monsters, with 60million users worldwide. For over a decade the annual Shoreditch Festival has showcased the area s cultural scene, with free performances and entertainment at various venues, while 2012 sees the first Shoreditch Fringe Festival, taking place over seven weeks and featuring visual design, digital art, live performance, theatre, music, dance, comedy, cabaret, literature, poetry, radio and live debates, es, film, media, and gaming. St Leonard s Church, on Shoreditch High Street, t, is not only the setting for the hit BBC television show Rev, but also hosts musical and dramatic performances throughout the year from classical to experimental to Shakespeare. are. 12 HACKNEY HOUSE This architect-designed temporary structure on Shoreditch High Street is the networking venue of choice for media, businesses and investors during Games time, an exhibition and conference centre with a programme of events and live entertainment from international names with Hackney links. Hackney House is open from May to September, 2012, and hosts the Government s UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) agency Tech City Investment Suite and the Digital Shoreditch Festival, both of which promote the area s tech and digital sector. An events programme taking place during the day and night showcases the best investment opportunities Hackney can offer, such as the creative and digital industries, fashion, interior design and retail and hospitality. The venue is also a resource for the thousands of accredited and non-accredited journalists in London for Games time, from around London, from around the UK, and from around the world.
